playoff chaos aside - What team would you most like to see us play in a bowl game?

Submitted by trueblue262 on

Obviously everybody would love to get in the playoffs,

but if complete chaos does not happen, what team would you like to see Michigan match up with? There are some interesting potential match ups. I would love to see a Michigan / Notre Dame game. Irish can run, but they can't hide from us!

Happy Friday, and Go Blue!

"Obviously everybody would love to get in the playoffs,..." Actually, no that hasn't been obvious. How many "I'd rather not get smoked, I'd rather us play in the Rose bowl" comments have we heard the last few weeks?

Into the Rose Bowl and play Stanford or USC.  Most likely scenario puts Michigan into the Citrus Bowl against Florida, Georgia, LSU.  I think I'd rather play an SEC school and beat them at this point in time.

Oh, I get it... like your avatar "suggests" - you like girls. Cool! More than football tho?

I had a girlfriend in the 80s from Lexington, who always told everone she'd meet her favorite Kentucky joke:

"You know what they call a queer in Kentucky? Someone who likes girls more than basketball"

Hey, neg her if you can find her. I'm merely the oracle that delivers her homespun humor...

If we beat Penn State I think we guarantee ourselves a New Years bowl. I would personally like to see us win out, including the B1G championship and play Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

How does beating a team that lost to Northwestern and beat Maryland by 1 & Army by 6 guarantee us anything? Except a chance to play osu for the division title!

Furthermore, I think the prevailing sentiment on this blog is IF we win out, no one's gonna be all that happy with a Rose Bowl. It's a sentiment I've been fighitng a one-man war against, but I'm losing...

Edit: AND how do double posts happen? A glitch in the send button? Fix that we'll all be pretty happy!

How does everyone think we would do against the Irish?

I would be afraid of their ability to run up-tempo like Indiana. Even if that's not how they normally play they have the ability. To me they are a Indiana team with more of a dual-threat quarterback and better defense. I think we could lose this match up as of right now, but will have a better idea after we play Ohio St.

Thoughts?

would be my first choice agianst whoever in the PAC12. After that, Florida would be a tough but exciting matchup. I think playing Ole Miss would be fun, and something new. Fournette scares me too much to want to play LSU.

Someone beatable.

I know there is an argument for "a good game" but unless you're playing in the final four, to me its a chance for more practices and hopefully a big win to last us through the offseason and a semi-ridiculous trophy to put in the case. Maybe I'm still affected by the Bo years where we didn't have a great winning percentage in bowl games but personally I'll take the easiest available foe.

and I also acknowledge that it stems form some very formative years as a diehard fan in which Bo's teams just could not win their bowl game for a whole variety of reasons. If you cannot get to the play-off, then winning the bowl and basking in that win for the whole off season is big.

We played USC in the 2007 and 2004 Rose Bowls. I realize that may seem like a long time ago to some people around here, but to me that qualifies as recent (maybe because I have mostly blocked several of the intervening seasons from my mind).

Love to see Lewis shutdown Treadwell.

Other mentions.  LSU.  Georgia. Arizona. Notre Dame.  I don't want to play Florida in a home game for them.  F that entire state.

promised to Pac 12 and Big 10 teams during the years that it's a non-playoff bowl?  If so, no Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl this year.

I'd be satisfied with playing them in the "Nearest Meijer parking lot or high school football field Bowl" though.

/still a little raw about last year

There's been a question on the board a couple times recently about "what is your favorite "other" college team? This season is setting up for me to possibly get a matchup of Michigan vs. one of my "other" favorites.

If we win out and ND loses to Stanford, there's a good chance that makes us the 4 seed against Clemson, one of my "favorites." My fandom goes way farther back than Dabo ... I've always liked the tiger paw and death valley and the Woody Hayes punch.

If we lose to OSU, we would still have a very outside shot at a NY6 bowl if enough teams finish with 2 losses ... but one of them would probably need to be MSU (meaning they lose to both OSU and PSU). Or, Iowa loses to Nebraska and in the B1G championship game and the committee puts Michigan into the NY6 instead. There is not way there will be four B1G NY6 teams even though MSU, OSU, Iowa and UM might be among the top 12 teams. In THAT scenario I'd like to see us play Notre Dame ... but ND is not one of those "other" favorites.

If we get shut out of the NY6 and end up in the Citrus or Outback, there's a good chance we could see LSU, which would be another favorite. (Same reason as Clemson, mostly aesthetics but also Les.)

And, if we were to go to the Holiday Bowl instead (not sure where that ranks now in terms of pecking order, is it above the Outback now?) then UM-USC or UM-Stanford would be pretty cool. Of course having Harbaugh play his old team in his old city would make for a nice story.

Uhh... Everyone saying the Rose Bowl, you realize that would probably mean we lost the B1G championship game to Iowa, right? Or that we win the B1G but get passed up for the playoffs? Who would want that?

Honestly I think the things Michigan would have to do to be considered for the Rose Bowl (go 3-0 from here) are at least as unlikely as the things that would need to happen to other teams for a two-loss Michigan to get into the playoffs. So I reject the premise that "complete chaos" is required.

I hope M wins out and squeezes into the playoff. But let's say that happens and then M gets smoked by Alabama. Is that a more satisfying end to the season than being left out of the playoff and winning the Rose Bowl? Intellectually it might be. But emotionally, that would suck.

Southern Cal or Stanford. Or ND if somehow that worked out.

But honestly as long as it's the Rose Bowl, it could be Kansas for all I care.

Michigan State.  Fuck your miricle puntinterceptionrunbackgift.

I want to beat them so badly they close the university.

Realistic answer - Florida.  We would absolutely roll them.

I know that it won't happen, but your question didn't limit the answer to games that might happen.

I really want to see us line up against Sparty with some non-Big10 refs.  Sparty "won" on a bad combo of poor officiating (that did impact the outcome) and a total fluke play.  I would like to see newly improved Rudock and company hang 50 on those bastards.
