OT - Wazzu coach gets salty after big win

Submitted by St Joe Blues on September 25th, 2023 at 9:56 PM

Washington St coach Jake Dickert made some provocative but thoughtful comments about ESECPN's realignment manipulations after the Cougars beat Oregon State. We've been laughing at the Pac-2, but this brings home that these are real people - players and coaches and their families - who are adversely affected by this.

  • Called out Lee Corso – 88-year old studio guy called the matchup with Oregon State the “No One Watches Bowl.”
  • Called out ESPN - "It's well documented what ESPN has done to try to get our league to where it's at.”
  • Called out other P5 (P4?) conferences for not bringing WSU into the fold – “We belong."

Then, to make things more interesting, WSU alum and losing QB in the 1998 Rose Bowl Ryan Leaf put out a supportive X pointing out hypocrisy from College Game Day then got smacked down by a pretty thin-skinned Herbstreit. (in the link above)

Corso took a shot first at Wazzu, and coach Dickert defended it.  What's the issue?  You seemed to have a real hate for coach Dickert.   This shouldn't interfere with your judgment on this particular situation, as it's a fair back and forth.

Personally, Corso needs to hang it up...like yesterday.  He's become irrelevant and cringey.  Quite frankly, it's hard watch.  I hope he can retire gracefully, but I'm afraid his time is running out.

Wouldn't it be an inverse proportion -- relevance decreases while senility increases? Regardless, I agree that a lack of graceful retirements among prominent individuals seems to be a theme in 2023, and I wish it weren't so.

I would also agree with the comments defending Coach Dickert. He absolutely should defend his program. Corso's comments, foolish or not, reflect a broader existential threat for WSU and OSU. Good to see the Coach taking a stand.

What is it with coaches calling out old people saying stupid shit on TV this week? First Day going after Holtz and now this.

I understand the guy's pissed. I would be too. But damn:

"Coach Corso is kind of at the point now where they just give him a sheet, and he reads off of it, and they try to make a joke, but it didn't even make sense."

Many people are thinking this, but they know better than to say it out loud at a press conference.

He doesn't. He got the quote wrong, which was "Nobody Wants Us" which...is true, and not a slam on Wazzu and Oregon State. Everyone in their conference literally left them and it's not their fault.

So it's quite ironic he's going on about "reading a sheet of paper" (i.e., doesn't know what's going on) when the Wazzu coach can't even get correct what he's angry about.

Maybe octogenarians shouldn't be spouting off (or making laws) but I'd be embarrassed to have a meathead coach that acts like they want to fight the old timers.

Typical Herbstreit.  Of course he responded ----- because he's become a shill and a "company guy" and he'll protect his and ESPN's brand above all else.

Watch Leaf get in trouble for this.  He's currently a color commentator on Big XII ESPN+ games.  So, he essentially critcized his employer.  We know the ESPN execs don't like that.

He didn't say anything that isn't true.

I mean yeah, you can say something like "the bigger man would just keep his mouth shut and walk away," but Corso directly insulted his entire program. If he had just insulted me as the head coach, then yeah, maybe I just be the bigger man, let it slide, and not turn a one day story into a two day story.

But he insulted my entire program. My players, my staff, everyone involved with the program. So I think Wazzu's head coach was entirely within his rights to step up and defend them from a guy who, quite frankly, has no business being on live television anymore.
