I don't know if a defense can ever be successful there, the way Lincoln Riley wants to play offense.  You get no rest whatsoever.  They either score in 1:30 or go 3 and out.  There are no long 12 play drives to rest the defense.

It does depend on how you define success here, though. I mean, his defenses at Oklahoma were pretty bad too but his offenses were so prolific he wound up in the playoffs three straight years. If Riley could find a defensive coordinator who could get them up to mediocre they'd be a playoff contender.

Having said that, at this point I have to wonder if Riley isn't undermining his team's defenses in other ways (i.e., other than the lack of rest you mentioned).

For reference, USC has given up this season...

  • 28 vs San Jose State
  • 14 vs Nevada
  • 10 vs Stanford
  • 28 vs Arizona State
  • 41 vs Colorado
  • 41 vs Arizona
  • 48 vs Notre Dame
  • 34 vs Utah
  • 49 vs Cal
  • 52 vs Washington

They had the opportunity for a late stop last night and didn't get it. Washington scored the final TD to put the game away.

The camera went straight to Grinch and with his hands on his knees...he just lowered his head. I said, "he knows." It was wild to see the very moment where he was resigned to his fate. It was over.

The USC defense is marshmallow soft. Michigan would score every possession.

I'm sure Grinch will find an analyst role back on Ryan Day's staff. Whatever.

Both ends of the field would be interesting. USC’s offense vs a great team defense in Iowa would be interesting to see for me. Would Williams come crashing down to earth with merely pedestrian qb numbers? Or is he really that good that his team would score triple or more points against Iowa’s defensive ppg avg?
