OT(?) - Thoughts on trolls

Submitted by MGolem on

Yes I am a hothead, I admit to that, but does it bother anyone else to the point of homicidal rage when supporters of other teams crash our beloved all things Michigan site? I posted a diary titled 'Notre Dame in the rearview mirror' (listed above) and I have had more hits from an Irish fan than from the Mgoblog community at large. In all seriousness, who appreciates rival posters and who wants them eradicated? Maybe I am a nut but I can't think of a bigger waste of time than cruising another teams blog and posting argumentative comments. Am I alone?

And I wouldn't classify that guy as a troll. He's just as delusional in his ND arrogance as some people are in their Michigan arrogance, but he's attempting to engage in productive conversation. It's just that his inflated sense of ND's value in the college football world makes him come off as a bit of a douche.

A true troll makes no attempt at valuable conversation, and just runs around saying inflammatory things to provoke a reaction and laugh at it. A troll would never write as much as that guy did, he would just say "Michigan's no longer relevant on the national stage, unlike ND" and scamper off.

I get that rival fans who don't have the best grip on reality are annoying, even if they're not outright trolls, but I find that to be just as annoying in Michigan fans as well. And we do have plenty of them.

The statements in your original post were much more general than only about your post. That is why I completely disagreed. Yeah I think its pointless for that guy to post in your thread which is in line with my statement that it is annoying when a rival fan is just here to cause trouble. But in general, I have no issues with rival fans posting.

The problem with your other thread can easily be solves if mgoblog would institute a 48 hour waiting period to get a new id as that prevents a drive by as you term it. For what its worth, 11w has such a delay when getting new IDs which prevents clowns going there after OSU loses or something like that.

Two part question.

I'm fine with visitors from other sites coming here to share their thoughts so long as they do so in a civilized way.

Trolls on the other hand have no business here. However, compared to many sites, MGoBlog does a fantastic job of keeping trolls under control. One of the reasons I spend my time here instead of other sites.

They can be a little tough, but you braise those bad boys and serve 'em up in a mushroom gravy over egg noodles -- that's good eatin'. Kinda like 'possum that way.

I dislike rival fans who come here just for the sake of attempting to rile up the opposing fans. I also dislike the people around here who allow themselves to get annoyed and get into arguments with them, that is exactly what they want.

I also cringe a bit when I read that people on here were browsing RCMB or 11 Warriors to laugh at opposing fans anger and irrationality.

That being said, I appreciate the reasonable and knowledgable opposing fans who are members here and post valid and insightful viewpoints. There is an OSU fan or two and one ND fan that jump to mind.

I think we do a pretty good job at caving trolls and welcoming good posters that happen to like wearing, say, green and white.

We really haven't done anything with it so far but if you do see someone trolling there's a Twitter account that PGB, LSA and I all have access to (@mgomods) that anyone can use to point it out in addition to the mod sticky.

All's well comrade - hope the same goes for you.  BTW when the time is proper, I'd be curious your thoughts on neo-federalism.

Back on topic: I considered including an affirmatory note in above post along same lines as:

"we do a pretty good job at caving trolls and welcoming good posters that happen to like wearing, say, green and white"

But then I thought, these guys are capable of speaking for themselves, which LSA and you subsequently did, so my words would have been extraneous.

That canceled Lansing visit is one of two big misses for meeting up with MGoPeople. I'd love to talk neo-federalism or Fed policy (I think that was a previous discussion point) or whatever you'd like, and I'd love to hear your thoughts as well. Sadly for everybody we won't have jhackney's crazy antics to go along with it.

About trolls, I did mean we as a collective. I know it's in the hands of a few people to cave a poster, but the welcoming aspect doesn't come from a mod or two, you're welcome here because an awful lot of posters appreciate your perspective and enjoy having you around. I'm sure we're at a point where it's redundant but I do appreciate the kind words.

I've always considered myself a guest here and try to mind my manners. Really, the main reason I visit and comment is that I respect the Michigan program and find the level of discourse on this board much more worthwhile than most "fan" boards.

I try to give a little non-UM perspective that is hopefully interesting and different, somehow I've managed to accumulated 1000 points, so I guess I've done OK. I've always (well, most always) been treated with courtesy by Michigan fans here.

Sorry to see we don't play you regularly anymore, maybe that will change with next B1G reshuffle.

Good luck with your season, and keep some perspective on wins, losses, coaches, etc.......it's early in the season and CFB teams can change a lot as the season goes on.

Go Big Red!

I think there are a lot of reasonable, respectful fans of many different teams in college football, and I welcome the opportunity to converse with fans of other teams, whether on "their" boards or one of Michigan's boards.

To some degree, I think any loss of decorum is the result of the fact that we're on computers. Fewer people would behave poorly or disrespectfully face to face.

They can do what they want as long as they don't cross a line and start attacking people personally.  It's the internet; we should all be able to handle a couple of idiots.

I guess from a modding as well as personal standpoint, I welcome the inclusion of rival fans who provide their perspective and are willing to have an intelligent discussion on the blog, and there are several here who do just that. In my opinion, that sort of exchanged should be welcomed. It is the "quick hit" people or that obvious trolls that get exiled, so if you do see those, definitely report those. We will do our best to get those folks off the boards.

I have spent zero seconds of my life reading any other team's blog/message boards.

Zero.

Now, if someone was working in PR or Communications and it was their job to monitor social media, I could see it.  But just to troll?  That elevator doesn't go to the top floor

And, as LSA said, there have been opposing team guest posters who are just looking for good analysis and debate.  There's one from OSU I can think of off the bat, always very reasoned and civil.  Have not seen you yet Buck.....   anyway that's different from trolling.  Trolls create an account on the same day they intend to begin trolling and hopefully don't last long.

Or someone who supports any team other than Michigan. I'm a wolverine through and through, but at this point, trolls have a better and more realistic view of the program than Hoke supporter's do. Are they annoying yes? And this is from someone who has been called a troll over and over again. But troll's aren't blinded by the bs that Hoke keeps feeding the fan base

They used to piss me off, but now I think it's kind of flattering. This program and its fanbase must weigh heavily on one's mind in order for them to create an account, log in with said account, and attempt to get a rise out of the membership. My contempt for MSU and OSU's fanbase is so strong that I don't want shit to do with them in person let alone online. That, and I like my IQ points where they are.

You know, I've never understood the thought process where you go on to other teams' sites for the sole purpose of acting like a complete asshole. I get talking about games, maybe some trash talk before and after a game, but not just to be a dickhead.

There's not much that I say online that I wouldn't say in person, but there's far too many people that act like complete dooshnoozles online because their asses don't have to cash the checks their mouths write. That's just not for me, I guess.

Are losers and are looking for a cheap thrill. They come to our sites when they lose and disappear when M wins.

Their posts and thoughts should be deleted.

my least favorite trolls are the espn talking heads who seem to take pleasure pouring salt in our wounds and then bashing our fan base on top of that....yet I continue to listen to them.

First, i think the current use of the word "troll" is specific to a very young audience. I'm 51, and I wouldn't think anything of going to a rival board and posting, "Hey, good game, guys." I've always presented myself with decorum and respect, and it's usually returned in kind, even on boards and blogs for rivals like Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Now, if they're coming over here and starting unnecessary problems, that's an entirely different situation. I've never been one to "talk trash," and it seems pointless to do so, particularly since we're just fans and/or alums, and we're not making blocks and tackles.

Again, just my opinion, for what it's worth.

Colin cowherd after a big USC loss...."they are just young and inexperienced, loaded with talent though, no worries"

After a big michigan loss....."that program is such a dumpster fire, if I were a big time recruit I wouldn't go near it"

The michigan bashing on sports radio and television is obviously somewhat justified, but you would never hear the same thing about, say, Tennessee, who has been in equal or worse shape than us for a decade. Let's face it...we big ten fans know we suck, but when Epson constantly tells us how bad we are it only hurts our programs worse because they do have a huge influence on our perception towards recruiting. Pisses me off to no end.

All that said....we MUST perform on the field.

Sorry Golem, usually I would side with you.  This guy is coherent and puts up Word Walls like nobodies business.  Points are defined and not your typical Troll "nyah nyah nyahnyah nyah".  He maybe an outside team fan but a troll he is not.
