OT-Reggie Bush Agrees to 4-Year Deal w/ Lions

Submitted by sULLY on

As title indicates, Reggie Bush has apparently agreed to a 4-year deal with the Detroit Lions. Details of the deal have yet to be confirmed.  I fear they may have greatly overpaid, but we shall see.

On a related note, they re-signed Chris Houston to a 5 year deal and signed DE Jason Jones to a 3-year deal.

I am shocked that they got a quality FA to choose Detroit as a destination.  Traditionally, the only athletes who choose to play in Detroit are hockey players or FA's who are scrambling after the more desirable teams have filled their slots.  I know that there are plenty of exceptions to this statement, but the word "Detroit" is usually a major stumbling block for attracting FA's in any sport.

This signing could be as important to the Lions as the signing of Pudge Rodriguez was for the Tigers; Detroit still isn't a "destination city," but at least the Tigers are able to attract some good players through free agency now.

Wouldn't it be great if Reggie Bush became the Pudge Rodriguez of the Lions?  Imagine the Lions actually being able to compete for high-level FA's.

You're absolutely ignorant. Prince Fielder? V-mart? Hossa wanted to come here. Should I even go through the countless FAs the Wings got before that either. Or a the players we traded for that end up staying? Detroit is a great sports town with good fans. It's not NYC or LA but fuck those places.

I would have to point that finger at you if I'm being honest. From what I got out of his post he said Detroit was (as in past tense) not a desirable destination for baseball until Pudge (all those you listed were post Pudge signing) and he clearly said except Hockey (so Hossa doesn't count).

So basically you just emphasized the point he was trying to make by not coming up with any football players at all, only baseball players who signed with the Tigers post Pudge and including hockey players (which he said was the exception). Plus he also pointed out that there wer exceptions to what he said....

Maybe you should read posts more thoroughly before you start hurling insults around.

Wtf I didn't even read this entire thing. Pudge was an MVP and a shoe in for the HOF before coming to Detroit I like Reggie but lets not compare the two. Tigers started attracting players when Illitch opened up his pocket book after the NHL put a cap in. Not being in the cellar of baseball and winning actually helped too.

Reggie Bush just told me that being able to be used in this offense the way the Saints used him was a big factor in his decision.

If this is the case, YES PLEASE!  Anything that resembles the Saints offense sounds good to me.

As a Saints fan, he was never a elite-level player for us (outside of special teams).  Darren Sproles was a much better fit. Conversely, when they used him as a straight up powr back in Miami, he had his best season in the league

Sign Glover Quin and this would be a remarkable day for the Lions, can't let him leave town especially is Delmas does indeed leave for St Louis.

Agreed.  If they could add Quin as well, that would give them a lot of flexibility for the draft as well.

I really liked Delmas.  When healthy, he was a very good safety.  He was a playmaker the Lions needed, but his health prevented him from being anything close to reliable.

I would be okay if they took either with #5.  Fork to my nose, I do lean a little toward Milliner.  I like the idea of a back four of Houston, Milliner, Quin, and whomever.  That sounds good to me.

I'm not as high on Ansah.  I'd probably prefer they re-up with Lawrence Jackson.  I think he was a bit under-utilized last year.  Given more time, I think he'd really pick things up.

It sounds like there may be better OL depth in this draft.  That might lead to a defensive player with the #5 pick.  If the medical reports that surfaced earlier this week about UGA's Jones are true, he might be a nice player at that spot as well.

What say you?

Love this addition. The offense was very dangerous before they added Bush to the mix. Hopefully its all defense taken in the draft

As a person who grew up a Lions fan but claims the Browns as his #1 team (lived here since 1987) I think it's a fantastic pick-up for Detroit.  The Brownies are loading up on defense (I think Michigan WR's might be better than ours next year) and have yet to upgrade their offense but hopefully that's coming.

I think Bush will be absolute stud next year in that offense!  Expect him to go high in FF drafts...

...Bush that's supposed to run for prez in 2016?

Typical Lions, never doing their homework.

Damn, too bad for Best. Thought he had a really bright future but it just wasn't in the cards. I like the other moves they made so far. Nothing earth shattering, but we definitely needed to fix our safety by committee issues. We had like 7 or 8 different safeties start last year.

guy is no longer a kid, and he's had some injury problems.  That said, as long as it's not all guaranteed, he might be a guy who can move and produce in the kind of space that Megatron can provide.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

Really curious to see how this is going to work out.  He has bounced around in his young career and has yet to live up to the hype, but was untouchable in college and just so full of potential.  I HAVE to believe he is so much better than he has shown so far.  Couldn't find a better time to break out and dominate the league than over the next four years.

but have you watched him at all? He has had a pretty damn good past couple of years. I know in college he was incredible, but he showed when he played for the saints that you couldn't expect that kind of production from him in the pro's.

After following him since he went to the Dolphins (only because he has been on my fantasy team the past two years) he has done pretty damn good and given hope that he can find at least a portion of the success he enjoyed in college at the NFL level.

I guess what I am saying is that he has proven to be a pretty good back over the past couple of years and if your looking for him to be MUCH better than those couple of years I think you're going to be disappointed. If I were a Lions fan and he just kept up with similar production of his past couple of years I would be happy with that, and I think you will be too if it happens.

Here's their article, with some excerpts from Bush's interview on his rationale - (LINK)

In his own words: "To see those safeties deep, see those safeties rolling over double covering Calvin Johnson, it’s a running back’s dream. We have to be able to run the ball in that situation. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to come here, to be able to bring a balanced attack and help take some of the pressure off Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford and just complement them. I think it’s going to work out well.”

Others have touched on it, but here is Bush saying it basically. Reggie Bush should be able to provide the dimension that they would otherwise have gotten from Jahvid Best. The Lions only amassed 1,613 rushing yards last season, which was in the bottom half of the league, but in looking at the stats, you can see instantly how Bush in the backfield has great upside, especially when his own personal rushing stats from last year would account for about 60% of the Lions' team stats.

I don't know if the RB rotation would get him that sort of yardage (it would be awesome if it did), but the bump in production would be welcome all the same. The potential to have a far more balanced attack is great news for Detroit since right now we only run about 25% of the time, which to me is quite low even in a pass-heavy offense.

I'm thrilled for Reggie Bush...

IMO, he has proved over the past few seasons that he can tote the rock like a traditional RB in addition to being a threat as a receiver out of the backfield...

Via Detroit News:

"Lions players Calvin Johnson, Matthew Stafford, Nate Burleson and legendary former running back Barry Sanders all helped recruit the high-profile Bush to free agency this offseason, and he said their desire for him to join the team helped his decision."

I know the current players were expected to put on the full-court press, but I was a little surprised that Barry Sanders had a hand in recruiting Bush to Detroit. He knows better than anyone the kind of O-line problems Detroit has had over the years.

Hold your horses Lions fans. Your offensive line is still and always has been garbage. Why not sign that guy named Jake Long, I hear he is good. You need a big name OT to protect your fragile QB
