Not to mentions the Indians are just rocking JV right now. Horrible night for Detroit and pretty awesome in Cleveland right now.

"The NBA rigged the lottery for Cleveland".

THE ok NBA keep going RIGGED uh-huh THE yea LOTTERY im with you FOR sure CLEVELAND. you completely lost me.

im all for conspiracy theories. the nba has no cred with me. but there needs to be some logic behind the theory.

"The NBA rigged the lottery for Clevaland... so that... they could make less money...?" doesnt add up.

Why would the NBA so obsessively want Cleveland to get better that they'd throw them one #1 pick after the next?  If Boston had one, people would claim conspiracy.  If the Lakers had won, people would claim conspiracy.  If New York had won, people would claim conspiracy.

The recent winners (since 2000) aren't exactly a who's who of teams that the NBA should want to stack to improve its ratings:

New Jersey, Washington, Houston, Cleveland, Orlando, Milwaukee, Toronto, Portland, Chicago, LA Clippers, Washington, LA Clippers, New Orleans, Cleveland, Cleveland

Sometimes probability just works out in funny ways, like it did here with Cleveland.

At some point the NBA needs to say, "You can only be shitty for so long" and change the way they do things. If you've won 3 lotteries in 5 years, I mean, that can't happen... If you're still struggling to make the playoffs even though you're dominating the lottery, you desrve to be shat upon as an organization.

Like the Ted Stepien rule of old, maybe we need a new rule built around the Cavs to say, "Hey, look, we can't keep rewarding you for being the shittiest franchise in the NBA with number 1 picks. At some point you're going to have to figure this out on your own."

I wish the NBA would at least not make the rig job so damn obvious. We had to get the 8th pick and we just happened to end up at 9. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Cavs get ANOTHER top 3 pick?!?! Just straight up tom-foolery.

From ESPN:

"Since the lottery moved to its present format in 1994, the team with (or tied for) the best odds has won three of the 20 lotteries."

I understand 20 is a small sample size, but that seems very small. Does anyone have the distribution of expected vs actual?

Actually, according to Wikipedia, those numbers are wrong.  The lottery went to the weighted formula in 1990, when the worst team (Nets) won the lottery.  The "tweaked" the format in 1994 to the current system.  2 teams have won the lottery with the worst record since 1994; Cleveland tied in 2003 when they got LeBron.

So, the stats should be, 2 out of the last 20 (10%) have gone to the team with the worst record.  In the "weighted" age of the lottery, the number is 3 out of 24 (12.5%).  Ironically, they were doing better in the old system (1 of 4 worst teams winning) than they are in the new system.

I have tried to understand the lottery before but never quite can. Can someone on MGoBlog give me a quick, easy detailing of the lottery system?

A couple of years ago, Detroit traded Ben Gordon and a protected draft pick to the Charlotte Hornets for Corey Maggette (a deal made to get Ben Gordon's horrible contract off the team).   This year that pick was top-8 protected (so if Detroit's pick was 8 or better, Detroit would have kept the pick).    Since Detroit ended up getting the 9th pick, Charlotte gets it.

The Piston's have a great history and are a very accomplished franchise. I was more or less speaking in regards to the the last 5 years or so. Maybe I shouldn't have compared them to the lion's, but it was to just get the point across as to how bad theyve been the last few years

Screw cleveland. They took Anthony Bennett. I am convinced that Dan Gilbert sleeps with whoever the nba commish
is. The pistons ALWAYS get screwed by the lottery

Each team is given a certain amount of number sequences. The crappier teams get more sets of number sequences. They then pull numbers out one at a time until they have let's say 5 numbers. Which ever team has that number sequence gets the first pick. They do this for the top 3 I believe and then just go in order of record.

The amnesty function was created for teams like Detroit. A quick fix to change your cap situation without engaging in trades like the Gordon-Maggette trade. Well, guess which dumb fucking franchise never used its amnesty?
