I hope those garbage wins at the end of the season meant something... But I know they didn't.... It would have put them in the 7 spot and we'd be picking 8th right now. Stupid fucking team. I hope SVG can turn these bums around.

For those asking how the Pistons lost their pick and why Dumars is to blame, they traded their first round pick to Charlotte (top 8 protected) with Ben Gordon for Corey Magette.  The Pistons had the 8th worst record, so they needed to have none of the teams below them jump into the lottery, bumping them down a slot (after top 3, order is set).  Because Cleveland jumped Detroit, they slid to 9, meaning the pick is no longer protected and goes to Charlotte.

We're in pet peeve territory, but that's a ridiculous calculation.  So that's the probability of the Cavs getting the #1 pick in 2011, 2013, and 2014.  That's a really arbitrary thing to test.

Why not report the probability of the Cavs getting three #1 picks in four years (instead of those three particular years)?  Why focus only on the Cavs -- not on the probability that any team would get the #1 pick three times in four years at least once over the history of the NBA Draft lottery?  Why not note all of the things that didn't happen (e.g., no high-profile teams except the Bulls winning the lottery this century)?

People spin numbers like this into conspiracy theories, but I think a lot of that is just playing misleading games with probabilities.

Taking into account the 13.8% chance they had to win in 2012, the probability of getting at least 3 number 1 picks through those 4 years was 0.108%, so about 1 in 928. Not totally out of the realm of possibility, but it does look odd when the rest of the draft order was chalk.

I agree with the posters above that if they had nothing to hide about it being rigged, they could easily do it live on TV. They'd get a lot more ratings that way, too.

What seems like the final event of the Dumars era (the product of an earlier decision, as others explained) sort made me feel like the poor guy who ran the control tower in "Top Gun" when it comes to the lottery and Dumars:

That was a terrible deal. Lot's of good options and we don't pick until the second round. I thought we were going to get bumped when we ended up eighth.

I guess we don't have to worry about the Pistons getting Stauskas now.

Man, what rotten situation.  Are we sure Matt Millen was not secretly running the Pistons for a while?  May have to buy some talent now.

Do the Pistons really need another 8th pick in the draft. Is that going to sure up their team, or just add more to the cap? This may, in some way, be a blessing in disguise.

Hey, I'm trying here, cut me some slack.

You're right, we're worse than mediocre. We finished 9 games back of the 8th seeded Hawks, who were 6 games below 0.500. We're bringing back the same team.

In the NBA you can't just coast by and slowly get better like in the NFL, NHL, or MLB. You'll be stuck barely missing or barely making the playoffs. You need to rack up multiple top draft picks.

I saw Brandon Jennings hit the side of the backboard twice this year while jacking up 3's.  After the second time, I never watched another game again.  I wanted Stauskas really bad here with this pick.  This sucks big time.

I am so pumped right now. I really do feel bad that the Pistons lost their pick, but as a Cavs fan who's seen us pick Tristan Thompson and Anthony Bennett with top 4 picks, I can promise you that these picks don't always pan out. With that said, at least from the Cavs perspective, this year has better prospects than any of the prospects in 2011 and 2013 when we won. I think Embiid has the most potential and could be the next Hakeem Olajuwon, so if his back checks out okay I think you have to take him.

I'm still holding out hope for Waiters. He has so much potential, and I think he can become a very good player with the right coaching.

With that said, if LeBron comes back (still unlikely, but you have to think it's more likely now than it was 2 hours ago), I think Waiters will be traded. Not enough shots to go around for Kyrie, LeBron, #1 pick, and Waiters.

Cleveland can miss the playoffs with 4 top-4 picks on their roster! I second Joakim Noah's take on Cleveland.

EDIT

Make that five top-4 picks (Kyrie, Waiters, Thompson, Bennett, 2014)!

I noticed that every single poster who questioned the NBA's credibility has been negged. Some of you guys are either extremely naive or work for the NBA.

This wouldn't be a problem if the league actually knew what a travel and legal screen were. Fuck their gimmicks. It isn't basketball.

Frustrating to think that one more lost game could have done the trick. Send Jennings to the kings for the eighth pick and call it good.
