OT Pistons lose draft pick
Title says it all. The Pistons were picked 9, which gives their first round draft pick to the Charlotte Hornets.
LAME!
This is largely on Tom Gores. Well, Dumars for signing Ben Gordon in the first place. But from what I've read, Dumars would've amnestied Gordon if Gores had been willing to sign the check to do so. Gores didn't want to, so Dumars made this trade to offload the contract instead.
The Pistons went 7-24 during the last eight weeks of the season. I don't think that they snatched victory from the clutches of defeat too often once they (unofficially) went into tank mode. It's actually remarkable that their roster managed to lose that efficiently.
For those asking how the Pistons lost their pick and why Dumars is to blame, they traded their first round pick to Charlotte (top 8 protected) with Ben Gordon for Corey Magette. The Pistons had the 8th worst record, so they needed to have none of the teams below them jump into the lottery, bumping them down a slot (after top 3, order is set). Because Cleveland jumped Detroit, they slid to 9, meaning the pick is no longer protected and goes to Charlotte.
to get back into the top end of the first round.
Sign and Trade...He gets most money from us in Max deal and he's restricted so he goes no where unless we let him.
I actually like Greg Monroe. Especially when everyone is always looking for big men...Build around Andre Drummond and Monroe. Get whatever you can for Josh Smith, and everyone else on the roster should be fair game if a good deal comes, but those 2 should be cornerstones.
I Like him too but i don't think he is a good match with Drummond and i Like Drummond a whole heck of alot more.
Cavs chances in 2011: 2.8% Cavs chances in 2013: 15.6% Cavs chances in 2014: 1.7% Chances to get #1 in ALL THREE of those years? .007426%
Yea its rigged. Quicken Loans was the highest bidder again.
so if one ran this set of 3 lotteries again, 200,000 times, we would expect to get this same outcome 15 times.
not sure what to think of that.
We're in pet peeve territory, but that's a ridiculous calculation. So that's the probability of the Cavs getting the #1 pick in 2011, 2013, and 2014. That's a really arbitrary thing to test.
Why not report the probability of the Cavs getting three #1 picks in four years (instead of those three particular years)? Why focus only on the Cavs -- not on the probability that any team would get the #1 pick three times in four years at least once over the history of the NBA Draft lottery? Why not note all of the things that didn't happen (e.g., no high-profile teams except the Bulls winning the lottery this century)?
People spin numbers like this into conspiracy theories, but I think a lot of that is just playing misleading games with probabilities.
Taking into account the 13.8% chance they had to win in 2012, the probability of getting at least 3 number 1 picks through those 4 years was 0.108%, so about 1 in 928. Not totally out of the realm of possibility, but it does look odd when the rest of the draft order was chalk.
I agree with the posters above that if they had nothing to hide about it being rigged, they could easily do it live on TV. They'd get a lot more ratings that way, too.
What seems like the final event of the Dumars era (the product of an earlier decision, as others explained) sort made me feel like the poor guy who ran the control tower in "Top Gun" when it comes to the lottery and Dumars:
That was a terrible deal. Lot's of good options and we don't pick until the second round. I thought we were going to get bumped when we ended up eighth.
I guess we don't have to worry about the Pistons getting Stauskas now.
Man, what rotten situation. Are we sure Matt Millen was not secretly running the Pistons for a while? May have to buy some talent now.
No regrets. That's a win.
If the Pistons find a way to trade for K-Love, I'm going to laugh. It might happen...
It wont....:(
Do the Pistons really need another 8th pick in the draft. Is that going to sure up their team, or just add more to the cap? This may, in some way, be a blessing in disguise.
Hey, I'm trying here, cut me some slack.
I'm of the opinion that having a 1st round pick > not having a 1st round pick. This does hurt the Pistons as they would have obtained a cheap, cost controlled, possible talent with the 8th pick. Instead the get nothing in what was already going to be yet another rebuilding year.
Well this puts the Pistons back a few more years. They're stuck in mediocrity for the next 5 years.
You're right, we're worse than mediocre. We finished 9 games back of the 8th seeded Hawks, who were 6 games below 0.500. We're bringing back the same team.
In the NBA you can't just coast by and slowly get better like in the NFL, NHL, or MLB. You'll be stuck barely missing or barely making the playoffs. You need to rack up multiple top draft picks.
I would be shocked if we bring back the same team. Also we have over 20 mil in cap space so i'm sure we will be players in the free agent/trade market. I think Monroe is gone.
I saw Brandon Jennings hit the side of the backboard twice this year while jacking up 3's. After the second time, I never watched another game again. I wanted Stauskas really bad here with this pick. This sucks big time.
I am so pumped right now. I really do feel bad that the Pistons lost their pick, but as a Cavs fan who's seen us pick Tristan Thompson and Anthony Bennett with top 4 picks, I can promise you that these picks don't always pan out. With that said, at least from the Cavs perspective, this year has better prospects than any of the prospects in 2011 and 2013 when we won. I think Embiid has the most potential and could be the next Hakeem Olajuwon, so if his back checks out okay I think you have to take him.
So how much did Dan Gilbert have to pony up?
forgot Dion Waiters.
I'm still holding out hope for Waiters. He has so much potential, and I think he can become a very good player with the right coaching.
With that said, if LeBron comes back (still unlikely, but you have to think it's more likely now than it was 2 hours ago), I think Waiters will be traded. Not enough shots to go around for Kyrie, LeBron, #1 pick, and Waiters.
If Embiid is the #1 pick, he will not require a lot of shots.
Aw, hamburgers.
Cleveland can miss the playoffs with 4 top-4 picks on their roster! I second Joakim Noah's take on Cleveland.
EDIT
Make that five top-4 picks (Kyrie, Waiters, Thompson, Bennett, 2014)!
Fire Joe Dumars.
Don't downvote me. Downvote Joe D! I didn't throw away the Pistons only possible way of improving their personnel.
Any chance we can snag McGary at 38?
There's no way the Kings would give up the 8th pick for Brandon Jennings. They'd probably rather start McCallum than do that.
