Maybe they'll say no classes on wednesday? Oh wait, someone would sue the school...
February 1st, 2011 at 5:57 AM ^
That's an urban myth actually. The Michigan Daily did a story about it a few years ago and found that there is no record of that ever happening. The reason Michigan never gets canceled is because almost none of the student body has to commute; which sucks because I work there and would love a day off.
February 1st, 2011 at 6:44 AM ^
If they get anything close to 18-24 inches, classes will effectively be cancelled. It is one thing to live in walking distance if you are a student; another thing to get there if you are a prof. I don't know about Ann Arbor, but in many jurisdictions that much snow gets a snow emergency which requires that all but emergency personnel stay off the streets.

someone sued the school over lost class time due to snow or whatever...

some of the best maintenance crews in the country. They have a battalion of workers and machines ready to strike at the first signs of snow and ice.
It sucks (because who doesn't like a snow day?), but we have to give it up for how hard and fast those guys work.
February 1st, 2011 at 2:52 PM ^
Mayhap they also recognize that if you give 24,000+ bright, restless, creative 18-22 year olds an unexpected day off, hijinks may ensue. That goes double when there's a party store within a few blocks in any direction from campus.
Snowball fights! Sledding! Rock-painting! Squirrel harrassment! Malware written! Co-eds Impregnated! Good god, anything could happen.

Sounds like the students had some fun.

I used to live in the south, and they would cancel school when we got even an inch of snow, now i go to michigan and they just use their get-rid-of-snow machines to clean it up! I've now realized I only liked snow because it meant no school.
February 1st, 2011 at 3:05 PM ^
This made me laugh. Being from Michigan, I always laughed at southerners and their utter inability to function with anything more than half an inch of snow. Now that I live in the south and lived through the mid-January storm, I'll be a lot less likely to ever make fun of them again. Things you take for granted in Michigan when it snows (read: snow plows and salt trucks) just don't exist down here. We got FOUR INCHES of snow at our house and, I kid you not, businesses were closed for THREE DAYS. It seems silly until you realize that they have absolutely no equipment to deal with even a small amount of snow, so what happened was that the four inches of snow couldn't be removed from the road (remember: no snow plows) and was repetitively driven over until it was a solid sheet of ice (remember: no salt trucks). Their only answer to the snow and ice was to wait until it got warm enough to melt (which finally happened on the fourth day).

I read this entire post very angrily and loud. Also, I'm glad I'm in India for the week, but MGoBlog is really boring when you're on 10 hours offset for EST.
February 1st, 2011 at 5:54 AM ^
I say bring it on...But then again I will believe when I see it.
February 1st, 2011 at 7:32 AM ^
the 5 inches - at most - we'll probably get. I'd love to be a meteorologist. I'd never have to be right and have no fear of losing my job.
February 1st, 2011 at 11:22 AM ^
My girlfriend's a meteorologist... I'd like to see you use the multitude of charts, maps, graphs, etc that she looks at every day to produce an accurate forecast. to even begin forecasting snow, she's looked at the air's moisture content, the cloud layer, temperatures of the air masses, wind direction and strength, and indexes I cant explain.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:02 PM ^
she doesn't just report what just happened in Chicago weather wise?

......... canceled classes!! WOOT!! Everybody is invited to my pants party!!.. especially Glen Mason's Hot Wife (sorry, no dark blue)
February 1st, 2011 at 9:45 AM ^
Damn it purdue never canceled classes when I was there. Lucky bastard
February 1st, 2011 at 11:53 AM ^
We only got three inches here, and everyone went nuts. It does take Purdue forever though to clear the campus.

I have the whole day planned. I get up and look outside. Call the boss and tell him that Im in the ditch. Go back to bed. Get up at 8 and check MGOBLOG to see if Jake announced. If not, go back to bed. Get up, drink coffee, watch ESPN, take nap. Get up, go outside so shovel walk, come back in, take nap. Get up, watch NSD special, go outside plow driveway, eat dinner. At 8pm check MGOBLOG to see if Jake announced yet. Keep watching for Jake news. Have beer, watch porn. go to bed. Get up on Thursday: if roads are not cleaned: Repeat.
Man I love the State of Michigan.
February 1st, 2011 at 6:47 AM ^
Amen. Sounds like a good way to spend NSD. There are benefits to living in the winter wonderland. I bet those Floridians are exceedingly jealous.
February 1st, 2011 at 9:43 AM ^
that doesn't seem like enough porn watching for a whole day off.
February 1st, 2011 at 12:03 PM ^
Tomorrow is Groundhog's Day and we all know how that turned out.
February 1st, 2011 at 12:19 PM ^
Looks like we are going to get hit "fo real".
Per my MGoBlog brother's suggestion, I stopped at my favorite adult store and picked up some more, newly released, porn. It could be a long day.
Maybe I will get lucky and my next door neighbor will stay home and I can "plow" her too. She is so f'ing hot. I love tomorrow and it isnt even here yet. yuk yuk yuk
February 1st, 2011 at 2:54 PM ^
God, I should neg you for admitting you bought porn. Don't you know you can get it for free on the internet?
Of course, if the power goes out who'll be laughing then? Or, not laughing, but...never mind.

"A BLIZZARD WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING"
Glad they clarified that, thought it meant we were getting free ice cream from Dairy Queen.

For the love of God BRACE!!! Studies have shown that the leading cause of death in a snowstorm is failure to brace...
In all seriousness, make sure your laptop and smartphone are charged, because we could lose power...oh and make sure you update your facebook status, because I dont know if I could survive without knowing what song you've been listening to for the last 10 minutes...

February 1st, 2011 at 9:50 AM ^
At least we're not Queensland. They're getting another "deadly" cyclone that will just about kill anything still moving in the area. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41363738/ns/weather
Is the weather changing enough yet for God's sake?

I'm flying out of reagan and through atl. I actually got stranded in atl last night due to "bad weather" in dc. I think that was just the airline lying to me. I'm hoping I'm not stranded in atl again tomorrow or thurs. Luckily the university is paying for the extra hotel stays.
