Nebraska AD Says Nebraska and Frost Deserve a Break in Scheduling

Submitted by HelloHeisman91 on September 20th, 2020 at 11:41 PM

What a whiny fucking group of people, try playing in the East!  Poor Lil Nebraska.

“For obvious reasons, I was hoping we could dissemble the schedule because of unique circumstances and rebuild it to be fair for each school in the conference,” Moos said. “I was outspoken on that, to the point where they heard it from me every day. The rationale was there, I didn’t think we needed to follow it. Nebraska is playing five AP preseason Top 25 teams. Ohio State’s playing two.

“I’m sure my friend (Ohio State Athletic Director) Gene Smith is smiling today. His friend Bill Moos is not. I’ve got a good football team with a great football coach that deserves a break here or there to start getting back on track to being a contender in the Big Ten West.”

Why should he STFU?? He is whining like a small child but the fact remains that the Big Ten is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Ohio State University. And Ohio State is a wholly owned subsidiary of its Athletic Department. After all...

"I'm just hopeful the coach doesn't dismiss me."

For the younger readers out there, some context.  There was a time when Nebraska would've been a feared opponent on a schedule. Back in the '80's they won national championships and in 1997 finished 2nd to Michigan.  Now they have fallen to a point where their AD is requesting some sort of football socialism with a schedule chock full of Nebraska v Rutger games.  Sad.  What next?  The Lions demanding the Patriots share 1/2 of their Super Bowl Trophies?

Nebraska won some titles in the 90's and played for 93, won 94, won 95, split 97 with Michigan, played for 01, they had a dang good program going.  Also was just out of playing for the title in 96 and 02.  Likely would have been in the cfp those years.

They were a fg away from winning it in 93 and just missed a last second fg they drove in the last minute for vs FSU.

Nebraska was good under Osborn but could never get over the "hump" shall we say.  Consistently finished the year with a great record only to be beaten by Oklahoma or lose a bowl game.  Enter the late 80's and 90's and Tom Osborn is nearing retirement, he sees Oklahoma and Colorado running renegade programs and winning everything.  So Osborn throws out his principles, ignores grades and discipline and creates a powerhouse in the mid 90's goes out a hero.  Even gets elected to congress.

He absolutely sold his soul to keep Lawrence Phillips in that program, lost all respect for Osborn and Nebraska ever since.

Yeah F those guys

Hours after the team returned from East Lansing on September 10, 1995, Phillips broke into backup quarterback Scott Frost's apartment by climbing the outside of the building to the third floor and entering through some sliding doors. He then assaulted his ex-girlfriend, basketball player Kate McEwen. Phillips dragged McEwen out of the apartment by the hair and down three flights of stairs before smashing her head into a mailbox. Phillips was subsequently arrested, and eventually suspended by head coach Tom Osborne. The case became a source of controversy and media attention, with the perception that Frost had not even tried to protect McEwen and that Osborne was coddling a star player by not kicking Phillips off the team permanently. Osborne walked out on a press conference when asked, "If one of your players had roughed up a member of your family and had dragged her down a flight of steps, would you have reinstated that player to the team?"[8] Outraged Nebraska faculty proposed that any student convicted of a violent crime be prohibited from representing the university on the football field.[9] Osborne defended the decision, saying that abandoning Phillips might do more harm than good, stating the best way to help Phillips was within the structured environment of the football program. Osborne stated, "I felt the only thing I could put in a place that would keep him on track was football, because that was probably the only consistent organizing factor in his life."[10] After a six-game suspension, Osborne reinstated Phillips for the Iowa State game,[11] although touted freshman Ahman Green continued to start. Phillips also played against Kansas and Oklahoma.

Despite pressure from the national media, Osborne named Phillips the starter for the Fiesta Bowl, which pitted No. 1 Nebraska against No. 2 Florida for the national championship. In the game, Phillips rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries and scored a touchdown on a 16-yard reception in the Cornhuskers' 62–24 victory. The performance boosted Phillips' draft stock. With Osborne's encouragement, he decided to turn pro a year early.[12]

Nebraska lost to Indiana last year at home. He complained during the offseason before last year about having too tough of crossover games and would rather play Indiana instead of OSU and Michigan.

Frost also said during Nebraska winless September 2018 that Purdue was a winnable game in the postgame after we beat Nebraska 56-10. Jeff Brohm took issue with that and then Purdue beat Nebraska 42-28.

Nebraska making an 8 game schedule:

- Week 1 - Let's play Rutgers. Make it at home though

- Week 2 - Can we play Rutgers again? On the road maybe? Ok, how about Maryland. But only at home

- Week 3 - Maybe we could play Rutgers at home again? It has to be a West team? Ok, how about Illinois. How far away is that? Better make that one at home.

Week 4 - Rutg...Ok. Not Indiana, not Indiana. We'll take MSU. I heard they have a new coach.

Week 5 - Seriously, it's been a month, can we please play Rutgers again? We'll go on the road. Fine. Northwestern, but only at home.

Week 6 - Oh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuu....fine, Purdue, but only at home.

Week 7 - Rutg....Nope. Rutgers!!!!! At Lucas Oil Stadium!!! Fine. Indiana. We need a rivalry game trophy for that one though. And it should be at home.

Week 8 - Ok, we need to play up to end the season strong.. Ru....Ok. Iowa. Maybe we could play in a cornfield near Omaha?

His statement seems a bit counterintuitive. If they have a good football team and a great coach, then why do they need a scheduling break to get back on track. I'm guessing he wants to swap out OSU and PSU for Rutgers and Maryland. They surely wouldn't want Michigan. I doubt they'd want another rock-fight snore-fest with MSU. And, they're not checking for an Indiana team which beat them in Lincoln last year.

Compared to OSU, not many in the Wolverine family like our schedule. But, we're used to playing Wisconsin, and we welcome the battle for college football's oldest trophy.

to each their own I guess.  I thought A Few Good Men was a pretty balanced look at the question......the main points that Nicholson makes about the military in his "you can't handle the truth" bit are largely true but it's not like they should get a pass either.

But I do agree w you that he has done some great stuff and I think shown far greater range than say Al Pacino or Robert DeNiro in the roles he's played.

I honestly think they'd get back to being closer to what they were in the Big 12 than they ever will in the B1G.  They're a natural fit in that conference, and it's a much better recruiting area for them.  The players they could attract as a member of that conference  are much better, and more numerous, than what they can attract as a B1G member.  They left in a huff about Texas getting sweetheart deals every time they turned around.  But while that hasn't changed (nor will it), UN has suffered greatly as a result.

They should suck up their pride, apologize to their B12 brethren, and get back into that conference.  Unless they prefer to keep pride in front of better results on the field, anyway...

Seems like something you might want to do (arguing for an easier schedule) but not want to admit and complain about publicly after the fact.

I guess he's just trying to avoid blame when they shit the cornfield.

there's deer in the cornfield, so the proper response is 'shoot the cornfield' since the deer are eating all the darn corn.

in seriousness, what he said publicly wasn't that different than the thread on this board a few days ago about how ohio's schedule was a cake walk and ours was murderer's row.

complete agreement with you there crg.  what was said would be best by back channels.  but we ought to have some self-reflection on how much we rightfully picked apart how difficult our schedule was in comparison to ohio's.

This is a self defeating mindset.

His team is going to see this statement and feed off of this loser crap. You should want to play and beat the best teams. He’s coddling his team... and they will perform like it.

Yep.  He's basically telling his players "you can't compete with certain teams on their schedule."  Awful leadership attitude.

PSU, OSU, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa have been on every version of Nebraska's 2020 football schedule.  It's not like any of them were added recently.

FWIW --- Nebraska's cross-overs in 2024 are, in back-to-back-to-back weeks, Michigan, OSU & PSU.  Something for him to complain about 4 years out, I suppose.
