MSU OL Spencer Brown suspended half game for dirty hit on McGregor
A half game is weak, but at least it's something.
Second straight year MSU has had more players suspended than points scored.
October 25th, 2023 at 2:55 PM ^
I agree with Brian's sentiment in his Monday write-up.
I know we talked about "getting back" at MSU for the tunnel assault last year, but really for this guy and anyone who plays for MSU this year, them playing for THIS MSU team is revenge enough.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:08 PM ^
Satisfaction is realizing that State had more pictures of Hitler than points scored.
October 25th, 2023 at 2:55 PM ^
At the minimum that should happen. He committed targeting, and that's the penalty for it. I think he should have gotten more, but here we are.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:24 PM ^
that wasn't targeting. targeting is a bang-bang play, came in too high, things like that.
this was criminal assault after the play and he's incredibly lucky macgregor wasn't rendered a quad with that hit. if i was JH i'd put the same type of hit on him that we did on claude lemieux of the avalanche.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:53 PM ^
Personally I think the tunnel at Michigan Stadium is responsible for this. Plus I saw a Michigan player skipping
(Thanks Mike I'll hang up and listen)
October 25th, 2023 at 3:46 PM ^
Too bad we don't have an advocate on the infractions commitee
October 25th, 2023 at 8:16 PM ^
Isn't this the absolute bare minimum that he could've received for this infraction? If you're ejected in the 2nd half of a game, you're automatically suspended for the first half of the next game, right? In essence then, he got nothing in the way of an additional penalty for a flagrant attack with intent to injure.
As an aside, about the time this went down, the broadcast booth brushed off what was transpiring on the field as spicey rivalry stuff. No, this is not spicey rivalry stuff. This is deliberately trying to injure another human being and doing so while he was defenseless.
October 26th, 2023 at 9:13 AM ^
I know he got a penalty, but did he get ejected?
October 25th, 2023 at 2:55 PM ^
B.S. he could have injured him for LIFE.
October 25th, 2023 at 2:56 PM ^
So basically a targeting penalty? Whatever, but I thought it was considerably worse than a guy going in on a full speed tackle with his head too low.
October 25th, 2023 at 2:56 PM ^
Thought it deserved a death penalty for not only football but all MSU sports, but ok.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:08 PM ^
What about last week's game suggested to you that MSU's football team is, in fact, alive?
October 25th, 2023 at 3:15 PM ^
I think letting it live is by far the worst punishment at this point.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:48 PM ^
Maybe they could make it a new scoreboard trivia question? There's an opening.
October 25th, 2023 at 4:38 PM ^
Maybe the punishment is to retain Mel Tucker as their head coach.
October 25th, 2023 at 2:56 PM ^
I would've thought something that flagrant / with intent to injure would warrant at least a full game...but at the same time I was expecting zero
October 25th, 2023 at 6:06 PM ^
NCAA is too busy trying to make themselves relevant. Please don’t bother them with player safety issues. Geez.
October 25th, 2023 at 2:59 PM ^
Still, should have been a full game. At least.
Lemme put it this way: if I was brought in as MSU coach, he'd be off the team, and not just as any sort of ethical statement. He'd be gone to underscore that we need to focus on playing smart football and not waste our energy on cheap shots directed at rivals.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:00 PM ^
So, essentially a targeting ejection. Given the circumstances, they could have added a bit more but glad they took further action.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:02 PM ^
I agree with this decision. To me, it was similar to the enforcement of a targeting call but it was actually more intentional. I also loved how McGregor just laid there then raised his arms in innocence. We have a special team with a lot of special players! Go Blue!!
October 25th, 2023 at 3:03 PM ^
Worst MSU team of my lifetime.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:09 PM ^
I'll agree.
The John L and Booby Williams era was pretty special, but those guys at least played the game (mostly) without the cheap bullshit. Enter Mack Damtonia... Tucker's team was/is filled with the asshats that Mork brought in and instilled with an aggressive hatred. Tug did nothing to change that even if he didn't explicitly encourage it.
October 25th, 2023 at 7:21 PM ^
Which makes it the best MSU team of mine.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:07 PM ^
Even Spartans, on RCMB no less, think he should've gotten more.
B1G officials should spend less time looking at surveillance footage and more time at these cheap shots.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:08 PM ^
Should have been a full game, should have been self-imposed, this is at least something.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:09 PM ^
+1 for the commentary on points scored vs suspensions.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:15 PM ^
They should investigate MSU for blatant attempt to injure. Vacate their 2021 win.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:18 PM ^
This is a Joke. Buy a burger, you will get more games.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:22 PM ^
Yeah THAT'LL teach him....
#eyeroll
October 25th, 2023 at 3:24 PM ^
I propose that anytime a team has more players ejected than points scored, it shall be known as a "little brother".
October 25th, 2023 at 3:57 PM ^
(I had this written but thought to check if anyone had a similar idea first):
Second straight year MSU has had more players suspended than points scored.
We have a new category of Rutgering - shall we call it being Spartaned?
I'm OK with little brothered as well.
October 25th, 2023 at 5:31 PM ^
STAEEned
October 25th, 2023 at 4:38 PM ^
I think we should call it a MAC.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:28 PM ^
So, let's get this straight. Coach buys a burger or two and not only he, but the department as well, gets put through the wringer which eventually leads to a voluntarily 3 game suspension then, someone puts an obviously vicious hit on another and receives a half game?
Targeting rules cannot be applied here as this was not Targeting. This was a blatant attack on a person who was down and unprotected which mimmicks the tunnel assault.
If we can't recognize that difference then we have no business stating opinions about it.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:28 PM ^
If a Michigan player had done this, it would still be a top story on ESPN and the player would have been suspended the rest of the season.
Of course, a Michigan player wouldn't do this.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:33 PM ^
But what did McGregor do to deserve this? Was he skipping? Did he show enthusiasm in the face of Spartan despair? Why should Brown be the only one penalized when the scUM player obviously initiated it. It's not fair!
October 25th, 2023 at 3:42 PM ^
The hit was dirty af. Given last year’s tunnel incident this should have been treated much more harshly to try to put an end to this kind of bullshit.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:43 PM ^
Making him play for that shitty team might actually be worse punishment than allowing him to sit out.
What a butt head.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:45 PM ^
Who said Mork wouldn't leave his mark on this game? Some shrink themselves down to fit their younger sibling perception both in character and actions. Not easy to live down to these standards. Wonder what alleys he scurries through now that all light shines on his Big Brother?
October 25th, 2023 at 3:52 PM ^
I honestly don't care except that this is basically the same punishment someone gets for spearing a QB as he slides down, so it feels like a weird new standard.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:54 PM ^
So what's the Rutger equivalent for more players suspended (or, heck, arrested) than points scored? A Stateger? Spartyger? Fulmer Cup-ger?
October 25th, 2023 at 4:39 PM ^
Call it a MAC.
October 25th, 2023 at 3:59 PM ^
This is the type of shit that college football fans should be angry about. This is what's actually "harmful to the physical safety and well-being of players"
October 25th, 2023 at 4:01 PM ^
This assault gets a half game, but all the college football coverage is about JMFH's assistant's assistant to his assistant sending his network to other college games with smart phones.
Makes sense... (?)
October 25th, 2023 at 4:03 PM ^
A reminder from the video + MSU radio feed posted yesterday:
• At first the State announcers declared they didn't see anything wrong and that McGregor fell down.
• Then on the replay, one of them said their player "kinda" hit McGregor's head.
October 25th, 2023 at 4:13 PM ^
The real penalty is that he has to play the other half of the game.
October 25th, 2023 at 4:27 PM ^
So essentially, they went back and gave him a targeting penalty in addition to the flagrant unnecessary roughness/unsportsmanlike
October 25th, 2023 at 4:29 PM ^
This reminds me that I saw a resurgence of "Urban to East Lansing" on a Spartan board yesterday and I encourage them to get their hopes up.
October 25th, 2023 at 4:35 PM ^
half game is nonsense
Harbaugh got more for buying a burger
October 25th, 2023 at 4:35 PM ^
Assault with a deadly weapon … half game sounds right
