Minority POV: anyone tiny bit concerned OSU lost?

Submitted by wolverine1987 on

So I switched off the OSU game when Samuel put them up 19-7, convinced the game was over at that point, started watching a movie, then promptly fell asleep. Woke up to the shockng news of the PSU win. Now, while I'm always happy for a MSU/OSU loss, in this instance I admit to a little concern/disappointment, for two feelingsball, (not rational reasons I admit) reasons:

1- An undefeated matchup of both us and OSU for the game would be a giant national story, with huge buildup and insane hype. Now, if things stay the same and we're unbeaten and they have one loss that's still a really big game, but a tiny bit less

2- Isn't a one loss OSU team that has already been upset actually a more dangerous team to play at home in the Game than an undefeated OSU team?

I can see the responses to this view already, and they are all legit, no argument. Am I alone in this?

It's way to early to think you can plan out the rest of the CFB season.  Heck, Alabama and Clemson could lose next week.  Who knows.  Enjoy the ride.  And it is never a bad day when OSU loses.

Nope. The voters will still be kind to OSU in the polls. The Game should still be between two very high ranked teams. I believe we now know who the better team may be at this point in the season.

This

OSU and Alabama will remain top 5 teams by end of year even if they have 1 loss.

Pollsters love these two year in and year out.

If Bama loses one, I can see the poll going into the last week looking like this:

Michigan

Clemson

Washington

Alabama

Ohio State

Undefeated WMU, Baylor or WV will still not be ranked above Bama and OSU.

We'll be in the playoff. That's all that matters. I could care less whether our game with them is "epic" or "awesome" or any such thing. I'm perfectly happy to see them lose as many times as possible between now and then. We don't need them to be a top 5 team when we play them, all we need to do is win.

Win the Big TEHHHHNNN championship, we're in.

If not, one or two upsets will have to occur in the conference championship games (depending on whether the committee considers the Big 12 chump to be indisputably unworthy of Larry Culpepper's tournament).

No. M's reputation is already more than good enough to make the playoff if they run the table. OSU can lose all their games and that won't change

The sting to the face could invoke a beast unleashed, or they could be mentally broken, just enough to cause further issues.

Have to watch thru the rest of the schedule.  Ain't no way its going to be a 5 game streak ala Corntonio, though.

I do respect PSU for never going into "prevent" defense.  They were still roaring up the field to pressure Barrett & their ability to run, even down to the final OSU offensive series.  I also felt like OSU wasn't playing with a lot of urgency at the end.  They let a lot of clock wash away that wasn't the limiting factor in the game but could have been.

I disagree. It's still a big game regardless. They stand in Michigan's way for a Big Ten Championship. Osu is going to bring it for the game regardless.

Just win and it all goes away. I think we're letting the past worry us too much. This team is better than the 06 team. I'm going to make that assertion at this point. Has there been a thread about that yet?

You missed the second half where OSU's oline was exposed with a 4-man rush. That makes for a much more winnable game in the shoe, negating #2. #1, as CW once said, "just win, baby."

on the Game. It will still be hyped as the battle for the playoffs unless either team loses 2 games before then. OSU will still see itself in the NC hunt and the pressures etc. are all the same.

One of the effects of the Playoffs is that games like last night's have lost a bit of their importance. If you're a traditional powerhouse and come into the year with enough hype and a high enough ranking you can almost definitely survive a loss and still make the playoffs comfortably.

I think this game helps us a lot more when considering game video. With some of our previous coaching regimes I wouldn’t really consider this too much but I fully expect Harbaugh and Brown to dissect the past few OSU games (and future games), and put together a brutal game plan. I really believe our coaching staff is the best in the country.

Agree with this sentiment. The end goal is not media hype for The Game or to rise up in the rankings (#2 will be highest unless Alabama loses). The goal is to win each and every game and the PSU film should expose game plan options for the coaching staff against a talented, but young Buckeye team.

Could not agree more. Plus, this probably puts some more pressure on Michigan. Do they have any excuse not to beat OSU now? I think a loss to OSU would be much more disappointing now than it would have been had OSU been undefeated. I agree with you.

My only concern is Gameday is probably going to go to the Bama/Auburn game now and Michigan will not have been on at all during the regular season.

I agree in terms that Ohio state got a massive reality check, that could either hurt them or make them mad and improve. But nothing really changes with this one loss, our season still comes down to the last game, if we are undefeated which I think we will be, or even with one loss

"The reality is that we very much would like to change [that] to become the team that we're capable of being, and there are fundamentals that are important in terms of achieving that end.

"So it begins with hard work. It begins with an attitude that I will not be denied. I am in charge of what I want to accomplish, and I will accomplish it; an attitude that is positive; an attitude that says, you know, we can, we will, we must.

"And then of course, you've got to be able to perform your part in the fray. You've got to do your job because ultimately it's not about individual stars; it's about team. It's about playing together as hard as you can, and as well as you can, and for as long as the game goes."

Your first point is valid. It would be a slightly bigger story going into The Game if both Michigan and Ohio State were undefeated. It would have a nice symmetry with the 2006 season, 10 years afterward. However, for it to be to have been a #1 vs #2 matchup, Alabama would have needed to lose.

I don't see how the fact that OSU lost at Penn State makes them more dangerous. I would say it makes them less dangerous, because OSU has had some weaknesses exposed on their offensive line.

1.  Yes, that's true.  But still worth it to see OSU lose.  To a team that UM thrashed--and yeah, I know that the transitive property doesn't apply in CFB, but still . . . .

2.  Not this year.  In 1998, MSU beat then-undefeated OSU and then OSU beat UM in Columbus a couple of weeks later.  Last year, MSU beat then-undefeated OSU and then OSU beat UM the next week.  This year is different (I hope and I believe) because:

a) More time will have elapsed between OSU's loss to PSU and the time of The Game, so whatever mental/emotional boost that OSU might have from a single loss won't be as great;

b) Unlike last year, our DC is unlikely to have one foot in his next job;

c) Also unlike last year, UM (I hope) won't have a depleted defensive line.

A definite plus coming from this loss is in recruiting. Additionally, if OSU were to lose to Nebraska (long shot imo), they could potentially drop 3 Ls in big ten play. Ohio is currently putting together one of the best recruiting classes in history--one would have to think three losses could change that.

1) While unbeatens would be cool, them losing is undoubtedly a positive for Michigan's chances to get in the playoffs. There are a few scenarios now where Michigan can lose The Game and still get in. 2) There is no way Michigan doesn't get their best effort for either way, so I don't buy the "more dangerous" argument.

Good points!

For myself I am not worrying about them only us. If they feel pain I am happy.

We are in control now in the BigTen. Let's just keep doing what we do!

Go blue and buckssuck!

We're in control of our own destiny. As long as we do what we're supposed to, the rest will take care of itself. Who cares what kind of national story The Game brings. The bigger story is how Harbaugh coached his team into a NC in only his 2nd year as Michigan's HC.

I understand that you may be basing your thoughts on last year, when MSU upset a heavily favored OSU game in Columbus - the complacency bubble got burst before the Wolverines could bust it. I get that.

But consider:

1. OSU will now go out and CRUSH MSU - so if you are into Schadenfreude then the Spartans are staring at a 8 loss season.

2. There have been many editions of The Game when either OSU or Michigan had one loss - even in the Bo-Woody era and it doesn't really affect the quality of the game.

3. Stop worrying about getting two teams into the playoffs - that is just some puff talk by columnists and talking heads. It won't happen. All of the playoff teams will be conference champs. Why? Because with only 4 teams, once 2 teams from one conference is allowed, it will just be more politicking by the SEC crowd. The playoff has largely taken out of the strength of that argument - when the game is settled on the field, we have seen some really great and deserving champs from all over the country. Let's not make it easy to start that crap all over again. Yes, Alabama winning were deseving winners, but don't start up about how this or that SEC team should have also been there.

4. Harbaugh has really restored the level of confidence and focus the team has not had in years. The Spartans and Buckeyes had two fortunate events. The Wolverines went through a historical bad spell allowing Mark Dantonio to build up the Spartans and OSU had Urban Meyer step right in otherwise, they would have gone through another period of a John Coooper or Earle Bruce reign. Harbaugh has put the Wolverines back on track.

No, they're extremely vulnerable, I was just hoping they'd coast into The Game with high expectations before we crushed them. JT Barret was running for his life all night against Penn state (lol) he's going to get demolished against us.

i would be more worried, IF this was the week before, and IF OSU was as good as they have been the last two years. They clearly are not, and this game, though they should have won it, exposed some serious weaknesses.

And when I see OSU weakness, I smile.

Michigan Made

October 23rd, 2016 at 10:19 AM ^

but Ohio State's offensive line is so porous. Penn State secondary left no option 4 even passes in the flat let alone long balls. the defensive line had little penetration unless blitzes were called. so long story short, I'm much less concerned then I was after the loss. That being said, the Ohio State Michigan game brings out the best in both teams. and we play there. so now I'm nervous again.

Haven't read all the comments but yesterday was great if for no other reason than Urban's streak of being undefeated on the road has been snapped. Analysis should end there.
