meta: MGoRadio is kaput

Submitted by Brian on

MGoRadio is no more. After football season we were considering re-upping if we could maintain advertiser interest but were told that we couldn't because the M-Den may negotiate exclusivity with the station; our title sponsor is of course Underground Printing.

Today, I found out that that has indeed come to pass. I'm disappointed but there's not much I can do. Given the years and years of support that Rishi and UGP have given us doing a show affiliated with some other apparel maker is out of the question. They are responsible for lots of the mgocontent existing at all, and we hope you remember that when you buy a shirt. Meanwhile doing a show with another station is tantamount to doing it for the podcast alone, and in that case we may as well do a podcast.

I'm hoping M-Den doesn't boot me off Thursdays as well, and this week's show went off just fine, so there's that.

What, if anything, can WE do to resume this content?

If the users are collectively able to sponsor the programming, can we get another season of MGoRadio?

To clarify my question, is this an issue with your relationship with UGP or is this not being able to use UGP as a sponsor?  If the users could replace UGP's income stream through donations/kickstartering, could MGoRadio resume?

Not a problem with UGP or funding, as I read it. The problem is that the M-Den sponsors the radio station, and UGP sponsors MGoBlog and is a direct competitor of the M-Den. So the station wouldn't let MGoRadio retain UGP as a sponsor. Because MGoBlog is extremely loyal to UGP/Moe's and vice versa, the guys would (quite understandably) rather end the show than sever ties with UGP.

That's disappointing - I really enjoyed MGoRadio and now regret never calling in threatening to send the previous caller to Bolivia for a completely arbitrary reason.

Hopefully, the podcasts continue - I listen to those when I am sitting at work reviewing items or doing report updates. Again, very good stuff as always and hope to keep hearing them.

I don't object to MDen paying money to sponsor a station's content; it's a business. Of course, I don't listen to the station, because I don't live in Ann Arbor anymore. But I enjoyed the webcast of the radio show and find this disappointing. But I respect the decision to be loyal.

From a morality and business perspective this was the right move and I can respect that. It is one of the reasons that I keep coming back here and supporting the site even if / when I don't  fullly support everything. There is a level of transparency / loyalty that you don't see many placees anymore!

I'll be the voice of dissent, not that sorry to see it go. Since they both came out on Monday, I had to choose between the podcast and the radio show, and I quickly found that the content wasn't all that different whichever one I chose, so if I listened to the radio show I usually didn't bother with the podcast, and vice versa.

Usually i ended up picking the podcast. Didn't really feel the callers added that much and I'm one of those Dennis in the OC once a year is more then enough people. I do like the Thursday show as the mix between all four of the regulars can generate some interesting tangents.

I actually kind of feel the same way - between the podcast, the game recap post, and the radio show, I felt like I was mostly getting 3 versions of the same thing. I did like the "top 5" lists and guests other than just Jaime (nothing against him at all, but the variety was good).

The callers were usually a big negative. There were a couple of decent questions but most of the time were were forced to listen to two minutes of some random schmucks "HOTTT TAKE" or that ridiculous dude trying to sound like Ufer.

That said it clearly let you reach a different audience, so I'm sad to see it go in that regard.

even on an Ann Arbor station, that guy is in love with Michigan State.  I also find him to be a cranky old man and really don't like listening to him.  I miss when they used to just rerun the top portions of the morning show.
