META: let's make this a nice place for whoever as long as they have certain opinions about our athletic director

People of MGoBlog:

Today we had a couple incidents I didn't like.

One was a rather long comment thread about the Rutgers cheerleader with a random bulge that is definitely not a penis that I didn't even notice when I posted the punt-counterpunt this week. Even if it was a penis hey man I know a couple trans people and they're just people. I didn't like the idea that this woman would come across this thing and it's all SHE'S A MAN BABY images, and all the worse if it was actually the case and there's a bunch of point-and-laugh-at-the-freak comments.

The other was a creepy stalker thread about some girl on the Rutgers sideline that I removed.

I don't mind the Kate Upton stuff because Kate Upton is famous for being attractive. I do mind when random blameless folk could feel bad or creeped out because of stuff that's posted here. So please don't. I haven't dropped the hammer this time; next time I will.

Sorry Brian, I edited that one a bit after posting it.

But yeah, as long as a person is not attacking others, posting innapropriately or trolling the board, I have no problem with them posting their opinions.  HOWEVA, that still doesn't mean that this will be a particularly nice or accepting place for people who like the AD.

Brian,

On the topic of civility and the characteristics of a "Michigan Man" I think this board is sorely lacking some perspective.

I would ask that someone with sufficient site rights do a modicum of research ( we pride ourselves on our logic and rationality, don't we) and post a topic on the concept of a Michigan Man.

Although many posters (including former players) attribute the concept to Bo, the concept predates Bo and anyone posting on this blog by many decades.

1)As AD,  Bo suggested that "a Michigan Man will coach a Michigan team", he did not coin the phrase or concept of "Michigan Man".

2) As partial evidence, available to anyone posting, one can search Google Books for the concept "Michigan Man".

In the October 1921 copy of the Michigan Chimes Volumes 3-4 you will find an article on

Dr. George William Carter '53M (1853), at that time the oldest alumnus and "Michigan Man" for Seventy One years.

On page 466 of The Michigan Alumnus Volume 15 (July 1909) we find the following partial definition:

"Again the true Michigan man has accomplished something to the credit of the University either in athletics, in the class room or in some student activity, and having accompished something he is anxious to try some other project which will bring a greater reward, and we have ambition as the result of Michigan spirit."

In the Michigan Chimes Volume 1 and 2 from 1919, there are articles discussing the "Michigan Man" and a counter article discussing the "Michigan Woman" !

It relates that "Michigan Woman has classed Michigan Man as Too good, Good, Indifferent, and Bad."

So the Michigan Man conversation has deep roots and it seems, over time, the key elements are the Michigan Spirit, loyalty, and accomplishment.

Being an Alumnus it seems does not necessarily qualify one as a "true" Michigan Man.

I would like to see someone pick up this topic and dispel the myths surrounding the concept of "Michigan Man" and discuss the possible attributes Bo wished to see in a coaching candidate.

(Folks should remember that even in Bo's heyday, many were disenchanted with his Bowl record (when they could make it to a bowl) and wanted to see Bo replaced with a coach which could run a "Pro-style" Offense. To his credit, Bo adapted to a more pass oriented offense in his later coaching years).

This is exactly the problem with Brandon. The guy doesn't ever admit an error. He mouths the words. He says the responsibility lies with him because he's the boss, but you can tell he doesn't actually get it. He blames everyone but himself. Later he tells you "we apologized" like a 7 year old who doesn't understand why he's still being punished after he said the thing you wanted him to say.

I think sometimes people reach for humor, any humor, when things are just incredibly tragic otherwise. I don't think people meant any harm- we are just so down. But i will pledge to the new code completely (and don't any of you think you can get away with m aking fun of monkeys!)

One of the creepiest things that ever happened at the University of Michigan was when Brady Hoke left Shane Morris out there on the field, hurt and stumbling around.  That was one of the worst moments in sports.  Anytime.  Anywhere.

The University of Michigan is my alma mater.  I always feel fortunate to be a Wolverine.  I will stick with our athletes, especially football, through thick and thin.

Brady, it is time to go.  Leave.  And take that schlockmeister DB with you.

Brady Hoke, leave Ann Arbor.  Go away.  Now!  We will pull things back together.  We will be okay.

Do you compare every living moment to Hoke? I ate some shitty pasta yesterday. It reminded me of Brady Hoke. It looked good on the menu, said all the right things about it being creamy and succulent, and it looked good when it first showed up, but then it was just bland and mediocre.

I must be in the gutter b/c that's one of the first things I saw and the  caption below appeared to be a somewhat humorous comment on it - as if the mascot was saying.....nevermind.

Instances of this that I could find last week were simply deleted, but I actually agree with this - let me say as a general warning to the board that if what Don has posted above is your entire argument, then please don't bother. Another aspect of trying to keep the place respectable is to try to avoid arguments that begin with "fuck" in general.

For a lot of reasons, the game threads are allowed to burn unfettered for a time, but the counts and the data are actually taken post-moderation. What you see in those threads (Rutgers will come later this morning probably) are basically adjusted counts. It's funny because sometimes they will be still quite high even after the "smoothing out", if you will, and I applaud the board for finding new and creative in-bounds expressions using those words.
