In a world which yearns for integrity and guts..we also have

The aftermath of the 10-10 tie in 1973, where they assumed Dennis Franklin could not play with a broken collarbone, just like they assumed Speight would not play this game.

The field goal that wasn't in the Horseshoe in 1974.

Trey Burke foul in the National Championship game.

To be Snakebit requires a Snake.

After fifty years of observation, I have concluded that our penchant for striving to be the best and to be good persons as well, leads to perceptions of arrogance and snooty superiority, which often leaves us victim to the jealousy of individuals who may or may not be lesser men.

This is a built-in impediment which will have to be overcome as long as we insist on doing things the "right way" .  So, yes it is not a fair game and we will have to play better than we did to overcome such obstacles.

I'm sorry if that sounds like the embodyment of "snooty" , I see it as a fact.

And Hemingway

Of course Fitzgerald and Hemingway were friends.

And Hemingway's young friend in the Nick Adams stories were based on his actual friend Bill Smith, who managed the Pool Hall, upstairs in the Union, when I attended.

Wait a year

One thing these Coaching Carousel blogs have made clear.

There is nobody on the list with star power and experience who is available or interested.

Hoke has two years left on his contract.

Give him an additional year and perhaps one of the "it" coaches of today(NFL or College) will have lost some luster and become more approachable.

Heck, even Saban is taking some crap this year, what would happen if they lost three games in a single season fer Gosh Sakes!

We need to revert to mid-20th Century Michigan Coaching

When the Michigan "Mad Magicians" had an offense that was a model of innovation featuring plays like "The Cyclic".

Cheerleaders did back flips off the wall for each point

Every time Michigan scored, before the field was lowered.

Maybe that is what we are missing, an incentive plan.

Most Excellent!

Nice post.

A true "Michigan Man" ????

Brian,

On the topic of civility and the characteristics of a "Michigan Man" I think this board is sorely lacking some perspective.

I would ask that someone with sufficient site rights do a modicum of research ( we pride ourselves on our logic and rationality, don't we) and post a topic on the concept of a Michigan Man.

Although many posters (including former players) attribute the concept to Bo, the concept predates Bo and anyone posting on this blog by many decades.

1)As AD,  Bo suggested that "a Michigan Man will coach a Michigan team", he did not coin the phrase or concept of "Michigan Man".

2) As partial evidence, available to anyone posting, one can search Google Books for the concept "Michigan Man".

In the October 1921 copy of the Michigan Chimes Volumes 3-4 you will find an article on

Dr. George William Carter '53M (1853), at that time the oldest alumnus and "Michigan Man" for Seventy One years.

On page 466 of The Michigan Alumnus Volume 15 (July 1909) we find the following partial definition:

"Again the true Michigan man has accomplished something to the credit of the University either in athletics, in the class room or in some student activity, and having accompished something he is anxious to try some other project which will bring a greater reward, and we have ambition as the result of Michigan spirit."

In the Michigan Chimes Volume 1 and 2 from 1919, there are articles discussing the "Michigan Man" and a counter article discussing the "Michigan Woman" !

It relates that "Michigan Woman has classed Michigan Man as Too good, Good, Indifferent, and Bad."

So the Michigan Man conversation has deep roots and it seems, over time, the key elements are the Michigan Spirit, loyalty, and accomplishment.

Being an Alumnus it seems does not necessarily qualify one as a "true" Michigan Man.

I would like to see someone pick up this topic and dispel the myths surrounding the concept of "Michigan Man" and discuss the possible attributes Bo wished to see in a coaching candidate.

(Folks should remember that even in Bo's heyday, many were disenchanted with his Bowl record (when they could make it to a bowl) and wanted to see Bo replaced with a coach which could run a "Pro-style" Offense. To his credit, Bo adapted to a more pass oriented offense in his later coaching years).
Kick Out the Jams (Live) MC5 1969-1970

They have played the Union.

I really would like to see the MF'ers Kick Out the Jams

He actually cares that we suck.

I know what you're thinking, however,he has the necessary connection with the area, the expertise, and the correct competitive attitude and non-tolerance of stupid play.

He knows people, he has been able to evaluate a lot of teams.

Most of the candidates mentioned are self-centered ego driven career types.

My two cents, (worth less now, then when Brandon played for that coach from Ohio).

PSU leaving B1G is crazy talk

Qualification of comments: 2nd generation Michigan grad, (Michigan native), who has attended PSU grad school, lives and works in Eastern Pennsylvania, and has a child currently attending PSU.

I work with literally dozens of PSU grads. Few were familiar with this story and their response to me is talk of PSU leaving the B1G for the ACC was a thought that never entered their mind and the whole concept is illogical from a prestige or financial standpoint.

Most are consdering the expansion as mildly interesting but a current step down competition-wise.  Many look forward to attending PSU games at Rutgers or Maryland as it cuts 1-2 hours off of the game day drive(each way).

I have heard the comment that they hope they can get decent  PSU away game tickets without having to buy a several game package (a current problem with the Temple competition relationship).

The key gripes I hear from the PSU students and Alum are with respect to the NCAA rush to judgement and general disgust with the University administration, past and present.

I think most folks on the thread know that PSU has a new hockey arena on the way and they are looking forward to the B1G hockey league. (They also love their PSU Women's Volleyball team).

AAU federal funding dwarfs sports funding

From http:www.aau.edu

"Federal academic research conducted by AAU universities totaled $18.9 billion in FY 2009, or 58% of all federal research funds provided to colleges and universities."

Doesn't hurt to have a presence near Washington D.C. ...

How about Mid-East and Mid-West as the new division names.

Sheiks vs. Steaks

Expansion

UConn, Pitt, Rutgers,Oklahoma.

Sorry Syracuse.

Would garner more accidental viewer eyeballs in the I-95 megapolis, than exist in the State of Missouri.

Virginia would also be a snooty choice that would extend viewership from the Mason-Dixon line to Myrtle Beach.

Think about it, Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Wash D.C., Richmond, hmmmm.....maybe double the revenue......

Awesome!

Has anyone

Awesome!

Has anyone called us Wasperines yet?

Don't forget Gordon Bell

Bell & Lytle .....what a backfield

Talk to Chris Spielman about DC job

Will be a pay cut, but might be an entree to a future head coaching opportunity.

Sounds crazy on the surface, but he does have Midwest and State of Michigan connections, NFL street cred,  well-known, understands toughness and the rivalry.

He sure sounded passionate about cleaning this mess up on the broadcasts.

At least he will venture an opinion on a replacement.

Had an end zone view of those kicks in '73

You can purchase and download the game from iTunes.

Lantry did not miss by much.

Lantry was a Vietnam vet and kicking phenom for the times (could probably play today).

I have to chuckle a bit reading some of the posts on this board, a little perspective helps.

Most of us loved Bo like a crazy old coot Grandpa who could bridge the gap between the crew-cut and hippie generations.

When we were able to go to bowls, Bo lost a lot of the games by close scores and there was tremendous pressure to transition from "4 yards in a cloud of dust" to a pro-style offense (queue scene from the movie "The Big Chill").

You know what....to his credit, Bo gradually adapted his offense to the times.

So cyclic->single wing->wishbone->pro-style->west coast->spread->whatever Gen Y comes up with...adaptation is the nature of the game and I believe Borges/Hoke will adapt.

Keep it Simple Stupid

Hire Hoke, rehire Calvin Magee and Fred Jackson, see if Hoke's Training guy can co-exist with Barwis......Done.
