But nothing concrete. Probably depends on our class size. He may actually be an attractive option since he can play for a year but not affect scholarship numbers for the 2012 class.

He started against Utah as a R-Fr (?) in that "hybrid" LB/SS in Shafer/RR's 4-3/3-3-5/3-4.  Then he was a special teamer for the rest of the year.  transferred to Hampton and played for them for (I think) the last 2 years.

If he's back, he'd be a WLB (I assume), special team's monster, and a Senior.

It would be a great story if he was back

Does anyone know where that would put him academically?  I wonder how two years at Hampton transfers to Michigan credits.  Its not often that a kid ends up further in his athletic eligibility than his academic standing (senior eligibility, junior standing) is it?  Just curious.

...in order to be eligible to participate in athletics, a student's academic standing must match or exceed his eligibility. Since he will have one year of football eligibility remaining, it's likely that he has junior standing right now and to be eligible in the fall would have to have senior academic standing.

Transferring from an accredited 4-yr college like Hampton is not the same thing as transferring from a JUCO.  The likelihood that his classes transfer as credits is high, but there's always the possibility that specific credit to a degree program might have some mismatches which would require some catch up or continued courses beyond a fourth year.

But speculating about a student's academic standing is probably best left as: if the university admitted him and he says he will soon be eligibile to practice with the team, he's probably ok (for now).

I agree - speculating or opining about a specific student's academic standing is not appropriate.  I hope it was clear that I was asking a plain-vanilla question about the rule regarding academic standing lagging behind athletic eligibily and you answered it well, I think.  Thanks for taking the time.

Marell Evans a two star Carr recruit left the team prior to the 2009 season over what he perceived as a lack of playing time and coaching uncertainty.  He left with no ill will against then Coach Rodriguez.

Scout has an article on this breaking development but it is behind the dreaded wall of pay.

Thank you for the links.

I had to chuckle at this little tidbit from the first link:

In the good news department freshmen defensive back Justin Turner has been declared eligible by the NCAA and can begin practicing with the team immediately. Turner is a highly skilled recruit who figures to make an instant impact in the thin Michigan secondary.

By chuckle I mean, not vomit.

Hampton is a University, so he won't have the same credit transfer issues that junior/community college transfers do.

He might drop a few credits, but my guess is most transfer no problem.

Can anyone here remember a case where a guy left, went somewhere else, and came back wtih eligibility?  I guess maybe Jason Forcier was close a couple of years ago.

...for Vlad, he's now at Toledo and will have to sit out a partial season there. If he were to transfer back, he'd need to sit out another year. That hardly seems worthwhile for him.

As far as Turner goes, clearly that (fully laden) ship has sailed.

He was going to transfer to Oklahoma, but they would not accept his credits, so he is happy to be back.

In the time before he left, he was working out hard and looked like a complete beast.  He is a funny, hardworking guy and a team player that I was sad to see go, but happy he is back.

Although he had no bad things to say about RR, he is excited to play for a coach that takes pride in defense.
