M planned to deliver game ball by drone, FAA said no

They wanted a drone to deliver the ball as part of the aerospace engineering 100th anniverasry celebration. Nixed by the FAA.

camera drones during practice to get a better, or different POV....maybe this was one instance Brandon should have begged forgiveness after instead of hoping for permission. In many cases right now the FAA is practicing "Don't ask us and we won't tell you no."

Perhaps at Ohio Stadium?

Not that any one has but....
Aerial safety at Michigan Stadium should never be joked about.

So it was okay to have F/A-18 Hornets, a Stealth Bomber, an old-timey carrier, the Michigan Hospital Helo, jet-pack dude, an eagle, and a couple parachutists drop into the stadium but not a drone?
Huh. Weird.

Liability if the control system goes out/isn't programmed correctly.

There is likely this, of course, but I thought the big obstacle is that UAS aircraft are not currently authorized in Class B airspace, which would mean urban areas and in any area with a dense population of manned aircraft. I believe that was the latest circular, but perhaps it was mainly meant for experimental operations.

Holy crap, I'd love to see the eagle deliver the ball. How cool would that be?
It would probably be deflated and half-eaten, but still.

Maybe for Home Game #5 they'll have this guy at halftime, celebrating 15 years since this song came out-

The FAA is a bunch of idiots. I get rules and regs are needed but man they just suck. It's a reactive orginization instead of being proactive.

A drone can be the 26-ft-long USAF Predator that the Taliban and Al-Queda are familiar with, or it can be a comparatively tiny quadcopter like the kind that the Ann Arbor company was proposing to use to drop the football. I can understand why the FAA wouldn't approve something as big as a Predator, but I think they might be excessively cautious when it comes to a quadcopter.

everything have to be a production?
September 19th, 2014 at 5:13 PM ^
It is pretty idiotic for Brandon to think he could get away with sending a drone over Michigan Stadium in this era of homeland security. Is everything a marketing ploy for that guy?

Now he's "David."
Hmmmph.

Not to be that guy, but why is Aero being celebrated? I get its an elite program (had a few friends graduate from there) but is this common for other schools/departments?
September 19th, 2014 at 5:31 PM ^
Because it turns 100 years old, when you turn 100 years old I'm sure someone will light a candle, maybe blow up a balloon!
September 19th, 2014 at 5:34 PM ^
Right I get that. I'm just wondering if other departments/schools on campus have had this done in the past or if this is a first/what makes Aero special?
September 19th, 2014 at 5:34 PM ^
That's a pretty big accomplishment, especially since NASA is not what it used to be.
September 19th, 2014 at 5:36 PM ^
Totally spaced on our presece on that front. Carry on.

Other schools/departments may not be associated with cool things that fly over football stadiums

Should've just ordered a ball from Amazon.

Why the hell is everyone condemning this as a marketing ploy, and the commercialization of the athletic department?
Why is this even coming down on Brandon?
We tried to do something unique and cool, to celebrate a top program at our school, on its 100th anniversary. I get Dave Brandon isn't the most popular guy around these parts, but I think putting his head on a stake for trying to do this is a bit much.
September 19th, 2014 at 6:57 PM ^
Seriously, this woulda been pretty awesome, people just like to bitch about Brandon for any reason or no reason at all.

When you've got 15 planes doing flyovers directly over 100,000* people, probably best to err on the side of no collisions.
September 19th, 2014 at 8:36 PM ^
Does this mean no more jetpack guy? That always seemed more dangerous than sending in a quadcopter with a football attached.

The Ford School of Public Policy is also celebrating its 100th year. They're named after a president and a football Legend, but when they approached the AD to brainstorm ideas, they were sent to IMG Marketing just like everybody else.
I suspect aerospace engineering paid the AD quite a lot for this stunt--money that might have gone for scholarships, etc.
