No baggage there.

At present, Tom Cable is the offensice line / assistant head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. He was also the Idaho head coach from 2000 to 2003 and the Raiders head coach from 2008 to 2010, if I am not mistaken. He's had many other jobs in the college and professional ranks, most of them as an OL coach.

As I've said in a previous thread, Hoke reminds me a lot of Tom Cable. Both are line coaches who have ascended the coaching ranks. Neither are know for their strategy or coaching acumen. They are mostly know for their love of coaching linemen.

Rod Marinelli loved coaching linemen too. We all know that worked out well.
December 31st, 2013 at 8:51 PM ^
Rod Marinelli was given a tricycle and was told to win the Indy 500.

Sure. But Millen gave him square wheels.

I miss Rod. He knew how to lose with dignity.

Yeah, he got a lot of practice.

He'd be a downgrade from Don McCafferty, and he's been dead for about 40 years.
December 31st, 2013 at 9:19 PM ^
Oh please don't bring McCafferty into this, he gave me fleeting hope as a boy and to this day I have occasionally dwelt on what might have been...

You're going to hear a ton of names for the next two weeks, 90% of them you should pay no attention to. For example, Jim Caldwell's name came up today, and he's likely not anywhere near a serious candidate.
December 31st, 2013 at 8:25 PM ^
Jim Caldwell might be a token interview, but that's it.

this is the worst news in Lions history since ... well... actually they have a lot of bad news.
December 31st, 2013 at 8:45 PM ^
The worst news in Lions history was the day they brought Dayrl Rogers to the podium and announced he was the new head coach and then they didn't say "Ha Ha Just Kidding". The only thing that could be worse than that is if they hire John L.
December 31st, 2013 at 9:12 PM ^
Could you imagine if John L. slapped Suh in a postgame presser.....

Barry Sanders was the compensation for hiring Darryl Rogers and becoming the laughing stock of the league. His retirement was the punishment for firing Wayne Fontes - the best Lions coach of my memory (maybe second behind Gary "Those Who Stay Will Be Champions" Moeller).
December 31st, 2013 at 10:07 PM ^
but in my mind Schwartz should have been retained. I'm 52, and he's the best coach the Lions have had in my lifetime. Don't make me laugh with all the Fontes talk.
Schwartz took an 0-16 team to the playoffs in what, two or three years, and they should have made it this year too. At least the team has been exciting to watch. Marinelli, Mariucci, Morninweg...holy shit what a parade of clowns in my lifetime. And they'll hire another such moron too, 'cuz we all know they won't actually pay for a proven coach.
December 31st, 2013 at 10:32 PM ^
Gary Moeller is the ONLY Lions coach with a winning record since 1973.
He also won almost as many games (4) in the 7 games he coached as Mornhinweg won (5) in the next 32.

More reasons why I can't bring myself to cheer for the Lions.
December 31st, 2013 at 8:38 PM ^
They should just bring back Wayne. The Lions still sucked then but at least they were fun. All the coaches who think they are serious and they can actually do something just end up angry and bitter and make watching the Lions dreadful. Then they crack like Bobby Ross. I'd put Schwartz in the Ross category. The last memory is giving the fans the f bomb.

Cable managed to lead some preeeeeetty bad Raiders teams to 8-8 records. I always tohught it was ridiculous the Raiders fired him given the talent they gave him and the results he got.
December 31st, 2013 at 8:43 PM ^
8-8 records would be pretty good. That's what the Lions were when they were good.
December 31st, 2013 at 9:08 PM ^
It was an Al Davis roster built for 1970's football. Not to mention Tom Cable had to deal with two years of JaMarcus Russell.
December 31st, 2013 at 8:40 PM ^
He used his time as coach of the Lions to think that Michigan re-hired him and he pretended to be Bo.
December 31st, 2013 at 8:40 PM ^
And he can say in the press conference that it's all about those kids and how proud he is of them.
December 31st, 2013 at 8:55 PM ^
These are the Lions fergodssakes!

Cable's alleged temper has been in the news since August, when Oakland assistant coach Randy Hanson accused Cable of breaking his jaw during an altercation in a coaches meeting.
In 1989, Sandy Cable sought a temporary order of protection, which said, in part, "On two occasions, one back in '86 and the other in '88, he hit me. The second time in the face, however on attempts to call law enforcement, my husband would rip the phone out of the wall."
A third woman, Cable's second wife Glenda, said in documents related to the couple's 2008 divorce that "in the past he has been physically and verbally abusive to me." Glenda and Tom Cable were married for 17 years. She declined to speak to "Outside The Lines", but is currently receiving support payments from Cable.
This would be the worst news possible for a Lions fan.
December 31st, 2013 at 9:38 PM ^
Sounds like the kind of guy the Lions like to hire.
December 31st, 2013 at 9:37 PM ^
Why not just sell the team to Al Davis?
December 31st, 2013 at 9:39 PM ^
This certainly can't be a serious question.

December 31st, 2013 at 10:03 PM ^
They fired him for going 8-8. I don't know if he's that great of a coach, but I thought it was stupid to do that at the time. I don't think they've had a .500 record since.
