Joe Bolden on the staff at OSU

Submitted by TheJoker on March 2nd, 2020 at 11:00 AM

Per Kyle Rowland on Twitter:

Joe Bolden, a captain on Jim Harbaugh's first Michigan team in 2015, is a defensive quality control coach at Ohio State. The Cincinnati native grew up next door to Kerry Coombs and played under Greg Mattison and Matt Barnes at Michigan.

Don't think it matters all that much but I'm sure we'll have people up in arms for no reason.

Classic move by Harbaugh; now he has someone on the inside.  Bolden is going to sneak into the shoe and drive a stake into the 50 yard line to break our buckeye curse.

"And for those who don’t think it matters, one very high-level recruit that Michigan is targeting told me recently that part of his rubric in finding his choice of school is a fanbase that supports their own, through better or worse. It matters."

This.  What is a former player who wants to break into coaching supposed to do? Wait around and work at the local Walmart hoping that a spot that currently doesn't exist opens up for them magically rather than taking a job under a respected mentor for a prestigious, albeit rival program?

Any of you would do exactly what Joe Bolden did if you were in his shoes.  Any of you.

These arbitrary loyalty tests we assign to players and coaches are just idiotic.  Coaching is a business, it's a profession.

Depends on how you define "in his shoes." If you mean "grew up having a good opinion of OSU", then, possibly. But I grew up hating OSU, so I wouldn't even apply there.

You're setting up a "false dilemma" logical fallacy. It isn't like his choice was OSU or nothing. He could probably catch on at another school like Wisconsin or Iowa or someone else less despicable.

EDIT: Pro tip to those who down-voted this: It's a bad idea to go to work for an employer who you despise.

In his position, Bolden would be an idiot not to take the job at Ohio State.

Jesus Christ, man. Gary Moeller was captain at Ohio State and Bo was an assistant at Ohio State under Woody Hayes. Former Michigan player and coach Bump Elliot was the long-time athletic director at Iowa.

This isn't like James Bond joining SPECTRE.

I agree with this.   Good for Joe.   It’s a great opportunity and a career start.

I don’t draw a comparison to Benedict Mattison walking out on his colleagues, players, and recruits who he schmoozed and taking the team’s playbook directly to our heated rival.

if he made it there over time I would be fine but to walk out one door into the other the same day....fuck him.

O I don't know, just spit ballin' here, but maybe a potential recruit won't commit to UofM because too many fans turn on everyone who a) under achieves, b) doesn't over achieve enough, c) likes golf b) is named Harbaugh or anyone of a dozen things that make this a difficult fan base to play for.

But don't worry its not YOU.

What fanbase with high expectations isn't?

Go ahead. I'll wait.

What...do you think Alabama fans are all angels because their program has won 5 of the last 11 National Championships?

I read a post on ElevenWarriors that was shocking to me. The guy was complaining about how he's only experienced 2 OSU MNCs in 20 years - and he became a football fan as a kid around the time Tressel was hired. Do you understand? A fan of a team that has won 11 of the past 20 Big Ten Championships and 2 MNCs is extremely disappointed. The guy isn't even 30 yet.

I'm in my mid 30s. I was a student assistant on the football team the last time we won a Big Ten Championship. I've gone 15 years without seeing us win a Big Ten Championship much less a MNC.
