Joe Bolden on the staff at OSU
Per Kyle Rowland on Twitter:
Joe Bolden, a captain on Jim Harbaugh's first Michigan team in 2015, is a defensive quality control coach at Ohio State. The Cincinnati native grew up next door to Kerry Coombs and played under Greg Mattison and Matt Barnes at Michigan.
Don't think it matters all that much but I'm sure we'll have people up in arms for no reason.
Another reason Ben Gedeon should have started in 2015.
They'll be planting a lot of stakes I reckon.
Or steaks
If his coaching turns out to be as good as his playing, he will disappoint a lot of people.
Hopefully their LBs start playing like he did.
This comment will be underrated...
Unlike Bolden
Brian Kelly got reamed in these parts for passing on Bolden...
They're going to look awesome in spring and fall practices though.
Wish him luck.
Classic move by Harbaugh; now he has someone on the inside. Bolden is going to sneak into the shoe and drive a stake into the 50 yard line to break our buckeye curse.
Harbaugh on the couch watching the news on the corona virus...
Sarah, from the kitchen: "Sorry Jim, we're out of whole mi..."
"SHUT UP SARAH! I have and idea..."
*tents fingers*
An idea? I couldn't help myself, sorry.
Good for Joe. He's off on life's journey. Gary Moeller was a captain at Ohio State and became our (very good) head coach. Good luck kid.
Except for that thing at the end. Let's try to avoid that, Joe.
"And for those who don’t think it matters, one very high-level recruit that Michigan is targeting told me recently that part of his rubric in finding his choice of school is a fanbase that supports their own, through better or worse. It matters."
Clowns.
Not sure what this has to do with a guy who is going to be wearing scarlet and gray now.
He’s gonna take ribbing now. Rightfully so when you cross the line. I’m sure those people weren’t too nice to Gary Moeller.
Cross the line? HE GOT A FUCKING JOB!!!!!!!
Good for him. He played for Michigan and is working at OSU. He’s gonna get ribbed for it and rightfully so.
He’s a low level staffer. I don’t care and am not saying he’s no longer a Wolverine unlike other people.
If they both offered him a job, and he chose OSU maybe then WD, but this is a little different.
This. What is a former player who wants to break into coaching supposed to do? Wait around and work at the local Walmart hoping that a spot that currently doesn't exist opens up for them magically rather than taking a job under a respected mentor for a prestigious, albeit rival program?
Any of you would do exactly what Joe Bolden did if you were in his shoes. Any of you.
These arbitrary loyalty tests we assign to players and coaches are just idiotic. Coaching is a business, it's a profession.
Depends on how you define "in his shoes." If you mean "grew up having a good opinion of OSU", then, possibly. But I grew up hating OSU, so I wouldn't even apply there.
You're setting up a "false dilemma" logical fallacy. It isn't like his choice was OSU or nothing. He could probably catch on at another school like Wisconsin or Iowa or someone else less despicable.
EDIT: Pro tip to those who down-voted this: It's a bad idea to go to work for an employer who you despise.
Jesus Christ, the guy has contacts at OSU. Would you advise someone you know to not use his network of fiends, colleagues, and admirers to help him land a job?
I'm not criticizing him, just saying that I wouldn't look there. That shouldn't be any harder to understand than his decision.
In his position, Bolden would be an idiot not to take the job at Ohio State.
Jesus Christ, man. Gary Moeller was captain at Ohio State and Bo was an assistant at Ohio State under Woody Hayes. Former Michigan player and coach Bump Elliot was the long-time athletic director at Iowa.
This isn't like James Bond joining SPECTRE.
Spoiler alert*
I turned down a very high paying job with Huntington Bank in Columbus and a big part of the decision to turn it down was I didn't want to live in that City. No, it wasn't the only reason, but it was definitely a big part of the equation.
You're an idiot... thanks for playing!
Joke's on you - buy a car and commute!
Everything about you is low level WD. College choice. Job. Everything.
No kidding... dude is just trying to build a resume. These positions are usually filled 1 to 2 years tops before someone moves onwards and upwards.
It's not like it's the Mattison situation. The guy is just starting out.
I agree with this. Good for Joe. It’s a great opportunity and a career start.
I don’t draw a comparison to Benedict Mattison walking out on his colleagues, players, and recruits who he schmoozed and taking the team’s playbook directly to our heated rival.
if he made it there over time I would be fine but to walk out one door into the other the same day....fuck him.
He got a significant raise, going from position coach to co-DC? Would have respected him if he gave UM a chance to match the $. Title wouldn't matter to me at all.
By the cross the line I assumed WD meant going to the other side, not crossing some moral boundary. He's just talking about Bolden getting a ribbing, which yes is totally deserved.
O I don't know, just spit ballin' here, but maybe a potential recruit won't commit to UofM because too many fans turn on everyone who a) under achieves, b) doesn't over achieve enough, c) likes golf b) is named Harbaugh or anyone of a dozen things that make this a difficult fan base to play for.
But don't worry its not YOU.
Rightfully so when you cross the line
Have you brake checked him yet Walmart Dropout?
What's the sense of talking about "through better or worse" when it comes to Ohio State? Are we asking if the fans will continue to support them through a playoff loss?
If I remember correctly, we once hired a pretty good former assistant coach at OSU to be our head coach.
Obligatory username checks out.
Not only was the guy a OSU assistant, he was a OSU GRADUATE!
Another example of how current/recent players and coaches lack the disdain for Ohio State.
Why? Because he grew up with Kerry Coombs and played for Greg Mattison, and now gets a chance to be paid to coach football with both of them? Settle down...
Exactly. Al Washington coaching at Michigan is another great example of how broken OSU football is now
....wait
Our fan-base is so toxic
What fanbase with high expectations isn't?
Go ahead. I'll wait.
What...do you think Alabama fans are all angels because their program has won 5 of the last 11 National Championships?
I read a post on ElevenWarriors that was shocking to me. The guy was complaining about how he's only experienced 2 OSU MNCs in 20 years - and he became a football fan as a kid around the time Tressel was hired. Do you understand? A fan of a team that has won 11 of the past 20 Big Ten Championships and 2 MNCs is extremely disappointed. The guy isn't even 30 yet.
I'm in my mid 30s. I was a student assistant on the football team the last time we won a Big Ten Championship. I've gone 15 years without seeing us win a Big Ten Championship much less a MNC.
Sure but I’d put the Michigan toxic segment of the fan base against anybody. Leaders and Best.
Just look at the replies to any post from Michigan Football anywhere.
It's less about the expectations and more about how we act directly toward players. In no way is Michigan the only school that has fans who embarrass, but we hold tremendous grudges and love to shit on a certain player.
What's the M stand for in MNC? I've never seen it called that? Obviously the NC stands for national championship. But the M?
