Jim Harbaugh Will Bring Michigan the Big Ten Title

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

So I don't know what Sports Cheat Sheet is, but they have an article up listing the 5 reasons why we're going to win the B1G Title this year.  As they're saying things I want to hear, they are obviously a credible website staffed with smart people.

Spoiler alert:  Three of the five reasons listed are HARBAUGH.

The season ahead of UM will play a large part of what UM does or doesn't achieve over the next 5 years. If UM wins 8 or more games it will be enough progress to convince top players that it's a risk worth taking in committing. However, if this season UM wins only 5-6 games it will be over. The so called " Harbaugh effect" will be over. Kids want to win, Harbaugh must show he can win today. If he cannot, well he will be just another in a long line of coaches who have failed at UM

Is a Great Coach, only great coaches can be owners of a Woody Hayes Trophy, which he received in 2010. But, yes But, he is sort of up against a wall because he is so far behind OSU ( and MSU to some extent) in recruiting. OSU is so loaded at seemingly every position. It's not that Harbaugh can't compete with that, but it's going to take a couple years. Tho UM's roster inst bad, it's a long way from great. Most of all he doesn't have that Championship QB, at least not yet. I'm sure he will recruit one soon, but till he does it will be hard to win the Big10 with OSU, MSU, and a rising PSU

I love Ink Master, can't get enough of it. Sometimes they'll show a person getting shaved to prepare the area for a tattoo. My question is, does the hair grow back or does the inking prevent that? Why would anyone want to get a tattoo in an area covered by hair? I can understand on the scalp (actually, no, I can't understand that) because if you didn't like the tattoo you just let your hair grow back, if it can do that. So someone in the know please answer me this, does hair grow back in tattooed skin?

I have no doubt that he will - eventually. I'd put our chances of winning the B1G this year at about 1%. OSU is just too good, and MSU will be a challenge. Things have to go extremely right for us to knock off one of those teams, much less both.

As crazy as it sounds, but the UM and OSU games seem to have been closer than us versus State. Either we play out of our minds or the team is showing its true potential. Now, who doesn't believe that this staff will have our guys playing to their fullest each week? I see is beating one of the two with an added loss early. State beats us. OSU beats State. We beat OSU. Anarchy ensues.

Not crazy at all - Hoke won one game against each rival. In his other 3 games against the two we were very competitive with OSU (aggregate score vs. OSU under Hoke was tied at halftime of 2014 game) and we got our shit kicked in by Sparty. It was very odd considering OSU and MSU split against each other during this span. Just goes to show how much motivation plays a factor in college football and how little the transitive property does.

We can always hope. But saying we have the "bodies to win in the trenches" with the only evidence being the defensive line's performance in the Spring game, against offensive lines that have struggled the past few seasons, is beyond wishful thinking. I think we have a lot of potential on the DL, even with Mone out, but we also have a lot to prove.

And I think most would agree that splitting the MSU and OSU games would be a great achievement for his first year.

We do have bodies on the OL though, more than we've had since probably 2011. Most of it has been really young, which has been the problem. We don't lack talent at OL. And really, they weren't bad last year. Improvement into the "fairly good" territory this year is to be expected.

a good shot to win both, especially OSU.  We almost beat them every year that Hoke was coaching so I have to think that Harbaugh will put us over the hump this year.

MSU is another story.  I actually think that will be the tougher game for us, mainly because it's early in the season and they hate us with the fire of 1,000 suns.  However, we're playing them in A2 for the first time since the 1890's, and I think they're going to have at least one loss coming into that game (Oregon probably).

MSU has been regularly punching Hoke's teams in the mouth, but other teams drew blood against them last year*.  Harbaugh's '07 Stanford team upset heavily favored USC.  If Michigan State thinks Michigan's going to roll over this year they're in for a shock.  We don't have a playmaking slot receiver but Harbaugh has his own ways of exploiting aggressive safeties.  I can't predict an outcome but MSU's days of pushing Michigan around are over.

Hoke played better against OSU, but that's because OSU's defenses are less disciplined.  It doesn't matter.  Over their last five games, no team has held them to less than 42 points. That was with a conference championship and a playoff.  That's absurd.  I honestly have no idea how to slow down that offense (then again I'm not Durkin), and I don't see Harbaugh's offense keeping pace in their first season.

I think both games will be competitive.  Harbaugh isn't going to say anything publicly to give our rivals free motivation, and you can bet he'll have the team champing at the bit to attack them on gameday.  But in terms of which team's tougher, MSU's been recently exposed* whereas OSU's the defending national champs.

*Not that it's easy by any means, but Oregon, OSU and Baylor all shredded their vaunted D last season, something no one did two years prior.  So yeah, if you have a top-5 offense. . .

We will run the ball quite well this year, if we can avoid injuries to the starting OL.  If a RB emerges with the ability to make his own yards, we'll be very good.  Miller was a weak spot all year, and the line began to gel at the end of the year.  WR blocking must and should improve. Pass-blocking is still going to be an issue, I don't see that improving much with this group unless Drevno, and a RB emerging there as well.

DL will be a strength against the run, but I don't see much pass rush unless Marshall.  There's a lot more than wishful thinking and spring game - both the OL and DL have a lot of starts, and in terms of the run game, some good performance.

I'm keeping my expectations in check.  What I DO believe, is than unlike all the Michigan teams of late, this team will get much better as the season progresses.  You're going to see the team actually improve game by game, and the coaches making corrections that for the most part work well.  Also, I think you're also going to see us play better in the 2nd half of most games than we did in the first half - like the Bo days.  No more of this crap where the team comes out after halftime and you see no corrected game plan or improved effort.

Wins would be nice. .

But I want to see a team that finishes each game better than it starts, and finishes the season playing better than they do at the start.
No before half-time fuck-ups, no 10 men on special teams, no peewee level clock management would all be nice too.

If we're overmatched a few times or get a couple unlucky bounces I can live with (swallows) 6-6.  I think 7-5 is more of a floor and 8-4 or maybe a bit better the likely scenario.

I think the floor for 2016 starts at 10 wins .

Given what you said I could live with 8-4 and, to a lesser degree, 7-5, but not 6-6.

Finishing 6-6 would mean that we would finish the season not significantly better than the 2014 season, and while I agree that in-game and in-season improvement is key, year to year improvement is also a must. 6-6 would likely mean we lose every single game to teams better than us (fine), but also either every single game to teams evenly matched with us or a few games to teams worse than us. Aka we wouldn't have improved at all from the past two years of Hoke.

In general, my regular season feelings go as follows (these aren't strict and obviously depend on things like competitiveness in losses, ongoing improvement and performance vs rivals):

10+ wins-ecstatic (unless, of course, we're 10-2 with blowout losses to our rivals)

9 wins-happy

8 wins-satisfied (contingent upon improved outlook for 2016)

7 wins-disappointed

6 or less wins-angry/upset/"how could this happen?!"
