I Can't Sleep / Work Productivity? HAH! Gameday Open Thread

Submitted by JamesBondHerpesMeds on
I woke up at 4:32 this morning for no clear reason other than sheer anticipation. I've not been this excited since, well, Eleven Swans Day in 2006. Let's be honest: our work productivity is gonna be positively atrocious today. Might as well make a repository for our Gameday jitters. Content, praises, hopes and fears all welcome.

Nope. Plenty of coffee drinkers out there. In fact I would be curious to hear what people are drinking and how they take it. I have a Peruvian single origin (that I roasted myself - medium light roast) in a medium espresso grind; #2 on the burr mill. Produces a pretty solid crema, although it has a somewhat earthy flavor. I normally prefer something a little sweeter but it will suffice.

Yeah don't use a bullet grinder. It is physically impossible to get a consistent grind all the way through. Also if you get a burr mill you don't want to go too cheap because they have a lot of little parts that can break easily. Something in the $80-$150 range is usually good enough but of course you want to check the reviews.

I've been horrible ill since last Tuesday. Maybe worst flu I've ever had (also found out it may be mixed with a lung infection) so I've had the oddest sleep patterns and mental state lately. Yet, I was also thinking of the "Seven Swans" post before THE GAME of the CENTURY in 2006. Was already a huge Sufjan fan and that just gave me chills given the game and passing of.....essentially the man who returned Michigan to "MICHIGAN!". I was only a reader then but I've been around this blog since the beginning and this game (even though, good or not, I care about CBB about so much less than CFB) feels like the biggest moment since then. I'm up due to being sick but it's all I'm thinking about and it's also my Birthday! What a gift a win would be, haha. I know the meds will knock me out again around 9am so I should be back to getting crazy pumped by early-mid afternoon. Don't know what will happen. Said before the first tourney game that if we made it to the NCG I wanted anyone but Duke or Louisville. Well, we got Lousiville (best overall team in america, IMHO) but when we are on our game we can beat (and sometimes beatDOWN) anybody. I want this team coming out wild, angry but smart and focused. No intimidation. Nobody trying to be heroes. Play your role and play it like it's the last game you'll ever play. That's what I want and hope to see. GO BLUE!!!!!

Working at 5 AM this morning, and tomorrow too.  Tomorrow is going to really suck to recover after the game...much more if we dont win.

But as for productivity...yeah, today is going to be like the day before Christmas vacation, me thinks.

I wouldn't call it sound sleep per se, but I did manage to at least work in a power nap or two between about 11:30 PM last night and 40 minutes ago. I will make a token appearance at work today (I typically get to my desk around 7:15 AM or so), but I don't expect a lot of useful data coming from my desk today, at least nothing that isn't hoops related.

Yea I'm up because I'm an idiot and am just still up.  Part of that tonight/this AM has been the anticipation.  Time for some sleep (hour behind so it's only 5 now here).

Tis' Gameday, though.  I honestly can't believe tonight has become what it has.  I haven't had a team make it this far in any sport since 97'; I was young but definitely already a big fan of Michigan, so I do remember it quite well.  SIXTEEN years ago, though!  I've just grown accustomed to my teams in the major sports (Penguins fan, but truth be told hockey takes a back seat to College Football, College Basketball, NFL, MLB) coming up short and always watching other fans' teams vie for the "Championships".  The Braves have been good but haven't done much in the playoffs since '99/'01, but those were ass-beatings in the WS and NLCS, respectively.  The Dolphins suck and have since my man Marino retired.  And we know how Michigan's seasons have gone in the big two sports for the past decade-plus.  So, the fact that a team of mine that I've invested much emotional output toward has made it to the last day and has a chance to hoist THEE trophy, is honestly a bit surreal still, at this point.

Gotta love cheering* 18-22 year olds on.  GO BLUE.

*Cheering is how I chose to quickly describe/type it.  To those that know me, this holding true for many of you too, "cheering" doesn't do the aforementioned time, energy, and emotional outpoor justice in terms of illustrating my fandom.

I can almost recite this episode of Big Ten and Beyond from memory. I want to soak up as much of this experience as I can.

Frankly, my work has suffered since this tournament started. Luckily, my boss is a huge Michigan honk as well.

Slept a grand total of an hour and a half, now I'm on a plane getting ready to head down to Atlanta. I've been a nervous wreck for the past 36 hours, and waiting another 14 for tipoff will be torture. All or Nothing tonight. Go Blue Forever.

the Michigan fans that frequent this site all share one thing.  Passion.  Tonight the Men's Basketball Team has a chance to change all of our lives.  When you "live" Michigan as hard as most all of us do....tonight's game means EVERYTHING.  I will be proud and represent win or loss....but a win would personally heal my soul from 92' 93' and football 06'.  Those three lost championships have burned me to the core even before I realized the "gravity" as Jimmy would put it, of those moments.  I went to FSU and played for the greatest coach that ever lived.  Despite my love for my alma mater and passion for my teammates and football program...my love for Michigan never wavered and the intensity of which i have cheered for them has never diminished.  Tonight for me..there is a chance to find some peace and justification for my obsession that has been Michigan.  A win tonight can't cure cancer and won't fix our budget or stop violence in my native city of Detroit let alone the world....but it will make a massive positive difference in my life.  I'm sure many of you share similar sentiment.  I hope that our boys come with it tonight and play to the best of their abilities God willing.  Your never DUE in sports and tonight will have to be earned.  If we are able to capture this opportunity it will live in my heart as well as many of your hearts forever.  Let's make history.  Go blue.

U must be at work today like myself, pick the project that you have been putting off and just kill it. Time will fly if u can just wrap your head around something

I made sure to get as much work done yesterday as possible. I want Tuesday to be free to hopefully have an awesome celebratory hangover.

Was scheduled to return to the Detroit area from our family trip to Miami.  Diverting to ATL for tonight's game!

My focus has been off since we beat Florida.

Huge dilemma: I have a class tonight. I'm not getting graded, but I need the information we're learning tonight to move forward in what I'm studying. I should be home to catch the second half of the second half. I'm 80% going, unless someone can talk me out of it.

Don't listen to the radio .. Go straight in and watch the game from the beginning. If you need the info to move forward in class, and have no other way of getting the info, then u cannot miss class. You're future is more important than a basketball game u can DVR and watch. This is only the beginning of many more tournament runs to come.

I'm not doing shit today. Period. I'm putting off a design project and making replicas of old Crisler court designs.

High today of 76 degrees in the DC area.  So my strategy is to wear my business-casual "Michigan" golf shirt.  That way when people see it, they will understand why I'm useless all day.

It also helps to have a boss that used to play college hoops.

Wish I could have gone with a casual shirt, had to settle for blue pants, maize shirt, and UM football helmet tie, under the dark coat.

My co-worker is in Atlanta for the games, but he is a Louisville fan.  Hope to be wearing this tie again on Wednesday when he returns...

I choose not to go into detail about what work I may or may not be completing, but let's just say that some of the sentiment above rings true! Super nervous, really excited, and I can't believe we are one measly game away from taking it all down this year. I really think Kansas was the toughest team in the tourney, and this game seems to be a combo of VCU/'Cuse. We have proven that if you depend on turnovers to get points, we will shut you down. I think Michigan wins by 10 and they never get close. Go Blue!!!
