"To Hell With Greg Mattison" thread.

To hell with Greg Mattison.

As if I needed another reason to hate Ohio State.

When I worked for the football program in the 90s, I got to know him up personally. He was a fine coach, but he was the biggest asshole on the entire staff.  Arrogant, entitled, soulless, opportunistic egomaniac. When he arrived from Texas A&M (where he coached the "Wrecking crew") he acted as if he was the savior, then jumped to rival ND when Lou Holtz retired. He treated support staff and players who weren't stars like chattel, and treated ex-players with indifference when they would come back to visit.

(yes, I know most college coaches have some degree of egomania, but his was another level, even on a staff with some massive egos - e.g. Cam Cameron, Les Miles)

Our defensive ends were playing hurt, and most of the passes that OSU threw took approximately .75 seconds to get the ball out to a receiver.  When we did bring pressure, like on the first TD to Olave, OSU dialed up the precise counter-move to inflict maximum possible pain.

I mean, for sure, screw that guy, but there were legit reasons why our pass rush had little impact last year.

Indiana sabotaged our OSU game last season.  They showed OSU how to beat us, and then injured Winovich with a cheap shot.  Mattison had nothing to do with that.

Mattison's worst crime, and role in the OSU debacle, was mailing it in for his last couple seasons.  D-line recruiting took a dive, some guys left, and the ones who stayed didn't develop.  Rashan Gary's game was so stunted the NFL drafted him as a linebacker (it actually kind of makes sense, he's extremely rangy for his size and can take on strongside blocks like a DT).  Dwumfour learned considerable rush D and Kemp picked up whatever pass rush he's had this year from Nua's first offseason with them.  D-line went from a stocked position of strength to dangerously depleted in a shockingly short span of time with Mattison in charge.  That certainly had an effect in the OSU game.

I'm getting kind of sick of it, really.  First D.J. Derpin' and then this guy.  If you wanna go elsewhere, fine, but my style isn't to mail it in.  I do my job until my last day, and I don't make the money he does.

Was remembering that hit on Chase Winovich while watching the IU game.  Happened right in front of us.  Glad we repaid them in spades this year in their own stadium.

The only good thing about the TV broadcast was occaisonal cuts to Tom Allen looking pissed.

The only thing I disagree with here is that Indiana showed OSU what to do.  I believe the OSU coaches were bright enough to figure out that they could outrun Watson all day long, without IU showing them anything.  What IU did do, though, is show US where and how Michigan could be hurt.

Everything else, thought, spot on.  So you get the +1 anyway!

I agree that OSU figured on their own that they could pick on Watson.

I mean that IU showed that our DTs were pedestrian enough to be single-blocked.  That's rather unconventional, but it worked.

The guy supposedly left for a pay raise and a promotion, but what makes that weird is that I don't see much evidence he did any work at all in his last couple seasons here.  So many linemen were unhappy with the program.

I think Day having worked with Brown had a lot more to do with OSU destroying Michigan's offense than any sort of bad action by Mattison. However, I agree 1000% that Mattison guided Harrison to OSU.

This reminds me of so many pro-mattison posts over the years before he bolted (again). Please refrain from putting sports coaches on pedestals. Less than 1% deserve it.

I call bullshit.

So a coach leaves? Maybe he did not get along with Harbaugh. Maybe he agreed to stay on for a couple years after essentially being demoted when Harbaugh arrived?

Maybe he wanted out of Ann Arbor?

I do not think Mattison WENT to Michigan or grew up here, thus, a job is a job.

Jack Harbaugh (Jim's dad) gave Mattison his first coaching job.  Carr brought him to Michigan.  John Harbaugh (Baltimore Raven's HC) gave Mattison his first NFL job, and made him DC of a Super Bowl winning team.  Hoke brought him back to Michigan from Baltimore because they were old friends from Carr's staff.  Jim Harbaugh kept him on because they (Harbaugh's/Mattison's) have been old family friends since Jack first hired him 87 years ago.

His experience with Michigan, and specifically the Harbaugh's, makes his departure for OSU very different from any other assistant coach leaving for a promotion.  It's a disgusting slap in the face to the Harbaugh family.  Fuck that guy all the way to hell.

Amen and F him even more for the drop off in defensive performance.  No one puts 100% into their current job when they're looking for another one.  Who knows how many weeks he was in discussion with Bucknuts.  It's weird enough they wanted to hire him, I think there were some conversations happening.

EDIT:  I shouldn't say "no one" gives 100% while jobhunting.  Bad statement. It's observeable in some of the coaching turnover we've had.

Dr,  Is that the worst you got?  (Cuz I really don’t know). He left twice for a promotion.  I like everything I have seen second hand.  (He didn’t apologize for the spike).  Does he schmooze for the camera?  The Wolverine wrote him up as a recruiting guru in the 90’s and it seems he helped pull Woodson out of Ohio.
I didn’t like Bo in the 70’s because my track friends found him difficult.  I later adjusted my opinion.

I have no ill will towards him as a man. But in looking at him as a football coach, all I see is a traitor.

I'm sure he and the Borens spend their weekends together talking about OSU's all-important family values.

I once met Don Brown's family at Animal Kingdom in Disney World as one of them commented on my "M" hat before briefly exchanging pleasantries.  Animal Kingdom is the best there is and so is Don Brown.

In conclusion, f*** Mattison.
