Game Threads Turning into RCMB

Submitted by MGoDC on

Definitely a disappointing game, but games like this sometimes happen. They can't miss a 3 and we cant buy one. Beilein is a great coach, and our players have been stepping up all year. Nobody thought we'd be tied for first in the Big Ten after Mitch went down. Sometimes, you just have to try to get better and make the best out of a game like this.

Instead, we have embarassing posters all over the game thread calling specific players awful, embarassing, sucking shit -- one guy said Michigan should just get off the court about 3 minutes into it. When did this board turn into RCMB? I sort've understand the angst in football since we haven't been consistently good in years (one good year, not consistently good) but our basketball team won a Big Ten title in 2012 and went to the Championship Game last year. We have a bad first half during a regular season game and suddenly our kids are all shit and an embarassment to the University? How fucking spoiled is this board? Michigan Basketball has performed well above expectations for 3 straight years, stop acting like you are entitled to win every game played and if we don't that means the kids can go to hell.

Success has gotten into the team's head and their laugher on Wednesday probably didn't help their focus while Iowa's loss to OSU boosted theirs.

What draws a red flag and the frustration is how this is the 2nd consecutive terrible outing on the road with the same possible reasons showing themselves again.

Do you really expect people to be happy with such a lackluster performance? My God, this is just a lackluster performance on both ends.

This club plays great some games and poorly the next. No consistency or leadership. We do NOT have a pro on this roster so let all of that GR3 and Stauskas pro talk die. They are not ready. They will be one day...but not anytime soon. Stauskas has trouble against athletic defense and becomes crippled by it. GR3 just looks lost and disinterested at times. I would not draft either. Levert is our most consistent player....He's wild...but consistent. This group could be special next year but I just don't see the leadership now to do more than 2nd in the B1G and a sweet 16 trip.

This game is not a simple matter of Michigan missing threes and Iowa hitting them.  I don't think people should go overboard, but the effort has been embarrassing.  I can handle losing.  It's a long season and you just can't shoot lights out every night, but it's like the team didn't show up.  Jogging back in transition, making stupid passes, not boxing out.  It's like they don't want to be there and it's pathetic.

It's a little more than them making 3s and us not. Looked like a complete lack of effort out there from a few guys. Our post players looked like they had never played an American basketball game before. The team in while looked confused and was out hustled the entire game. They didn't get beat. They just didn't show up.

Media is jumping all over the "Nik's being denied the ball by a smaller player' as the reason we lost at IU & Iowa and 'Nik's not handling the media attention well.' I call horseshit on media.    In both of those losses one opposing player (Yogi & Marble) found themselves open for several uncontested 3's with no apparent defensive adjustment by the good guys. Also both games our oppenents had a very high offensive reb. % of missed shots which generates many points in the paint (also a missed def reb.negates a possible fast break chance). Transistion def. was especially bad early in both games, easy baskets gets a teams mojo going.Last years team had the same problems but once Mitch was inserted into the starting lineup much of that disappeared. Our problems are on the defensive end.

What players want to play for a team that insults their players, coaches and has already decided that 2014 is a lost cause before the season starts (football). If we buck up and realize that this is one game and no team is going to win all of their games unless you're the 76 Hoosiers, we'll be in a lot better shape. We got killed at MSU last year by 30 and lost to an unranked PSU team and went to the national championship game.

From a moderating standpoint, at least the way I prefer doing this -

Typically the open threads get left alone until afterwards and then are read carefully - that's how it was done during football season and we do ding people based on the direction given. That's much easier than trying to continually refresh the thread and catch up with new comments.

The rule that looms large is of course the one that states that while it is OK to criticize how a player is playing, throwing personal insults at a player is never OK and will be dealt with either through Bolivia or the caving of that individual. Which one depends on posting history / seriousness of offense.

Someone mentioned it above, but it is an important distinction - hoops spleen seems to be much shorter-lived than the football equivalent, which probably equates to the appearance of these threads being monitored less. They are monitored just as carefully though.

Honest question:

Is there any serious concern over this?  From your post, it doesn't appear so.  As someone who's a serious student of the game and likes to discuss it rationally, I have found myself so turned off my the MGoBoard that I have pretty much given up on 95% of threads I used to visit.

Even stuff that doesn't cross the obvious lines can still be stupid and completely unneccesary.  Why tolerate it?  Ban with frequency, I say!

Dinging guys after the fact doesn't seem to be an effective deterrent.  Is it possible to raise the threshold for posting to a point level to prevent knee-jerk stupidity?

There are a few things that probably could be done that are above my pay grade - I can definitely revoice the concern about raising point threshholds because it is a common suggestion and, in all honesty, is not a bad idea at all. A similar suggestion has been put forth for starting threads just in general rather than at times when the site is on the brink of chaos.

We did clean up above and beyond as much as we were able during football season, particularly after Penn State. I dare say it might be an effort that could stand to be renewed during hoops season because I rather agree, there are folks who post unnecessary and irrelevant (if not profane or abusive) comments with such volume that it becomes problematic all the same.

Free speech, and as long as it isn't mean towards a player it's fine. We are grown men, and can handle some tough comments. Our teams need to toughen up and our fans need to demand Championships. Thank you sir, and Go Blue! MBB is playing great and had a couple of bad games.

Thanks for the reply.

I used to post a lot at the Pistons website before they won the '04 championship.  There was a "hey-day" where posters were always intelligent, respectful and the games were discussed on a level far beyond knee-jerk reactions.

Then the '04 season happened and the place went to shit.

I haven't been there in years and I would hate to see the same happen to MGoBlog.  I think it's far less likely to happen here (so many of us have a tangible relationship to the teams beyond fandom since many are students/alums), however I think there's general consensus of a decline in the prior couple years.  Heck, Brian admitted it in his big post about the point system's return.

and it has gotten better, but I don't ever remember a time where I was in a basketball open thread and thought it was all great. For whatever reason* basketball open threads have always been a nightmare. As soon as M goes down everything goes to hell, and it stays that way after a bad loss. I'm quite comfortable saying the PSU open thread last year is the worst in the history of the site.

*It could just be as simple as not as many people care about hockey and football gets way more comments which helps ease the pain of the worst stuff, I don't know.

This sucks. People suck. It's an early February BB game where we run into a good team that played great.  Michigan brought their C- game today.  I'm disappointed with the effort from (in order): GRIII, NS, JH, and CL on D.  Iowa got hot and this was probably going to be a loss no matter what, but I wouldn't be this disappointed if they all played hard.   To see this team commit TO after TO and get beat to every loose ball, is frustrating.

If we split this 4 game gauntlet with wins over Ohio and Sparty I'd be cool with it. Beating MSU is a must now. A loss is a loss but our inconsistency is troubling. We blow up Stauskas like he is Jordan. He is not...not even the best 2 guard in the B1G. We act like GR3 is all world. He is not. We have good players but none are truly great yet. We don't have an NBA ready guy on the roster as of now. We are a good team but we need leadership. We don't have any right now.

I didn't read the open thread, but I'm sure it was full of venting.  Having said that, I can't really criticize anyone for that - any fanbase would have been pretty disgusted with this effort today.  I don't think it's really fair to condemn people for what they post in the heat of the moment (assuming what they write isn't too nasty).  But if they continue to bring the negativity for days on end, then it's an issue.

This was a horrible game/effort.  But a game like happens to practically team at some point (think 2013 MSU at Breslin), especially on the road, so now that it's over, people should calm down a bit.

Guys, someone on the internet is mad that their favorite basketball team lost by 18 today. Can you believe that? I never get mad about anything. Good thing I'm here to give them a sanctimonious speech about how awful they are for complaining on an internet board.

I usually don't comment on players but this game was pretty pathetic.  Not only did they not show any enthusiasm for a big Big10 game, but the two "stars" of the team Stauskas and Robinson are playing as if they have their eyes on the NBA, not on playing for Michigan.  GRIII is a very talented player but routinely does NOTHING in big games.  Maybe if they read that people are pissed at them they'll be motivated to do SOMETHING.

Like most fansites, MGoBloggers are both front-runners and chicken littles.  Rarely is there any metered discussions with a sense of calm and foresight; it's either "we're #1" or "fire everybody!"

It's a tough loss, on the road, to a good team.  They destroyed Nebraska last time; this time the buckets weren't falling and Iowa was playing well.  They might not win the conference title this year, but UM has a solid team that could play really well in the tournament, which honestly means more to me than a conference crown.

There are some people who value hardware, any hardware, above all else.  And I'm not even saying a championship game appearance; I'd be fine if they made it to the Sweet 16/Elite 8.  Yes, winning more games gets you a better seed and so winning a conference title is great, but I don't know, it just feels like a bunch of scheduling quirks and the like can get you the crown.  Also, the way the conference is run seems to favor the MSU/UW style of winning games, which doesn't always translate to tourney success because, you know, hitting people gets called for fouls by other referees.

I guess I have just never cared about winning conference crowns; the goal should always be major title and banners.  While it may matter to some kids, I think MSU's number of FF banners mean way more than splitting a couple of titles in the B1G.  I want UM to be a national program that wins on the biggest stage, not necessarily a school single-mindedly focused on conference crowns that aren't even earned through a true round-robin series of match-ups.
