Det. News: Lloyd Carr would hire Jim Harbaugh if it were up to him.
Very out of character for Carr to even comment about this stuff, but here it is. itshappening.gif?

EDIT: Perhaps the "bridge mending" between the two Brian had referenced in an earlier post was successful?

I'm still disappointed my personal favorite Lloyd quote ("Did you ever drink a beer?") never became a meme

The man stated publicly that he wants Harbaugh as HC. That is a very significant act by lloyd. He rarely vocalizes on anything relating to UM football these days.

So...Michigan was all of a sudden a bad place to be? At the time of the hiring, RR was a very high profile hire.
December 4th, 2014 at 10:48 PM ^
For guys like Ryan Mallett, absolutely.

December 4th, 2014 at 11:10 PM ^
You guys do realize that Carr didn't have the authority to sign anyone's transfer papers, right?
RichRod, as the coach, ended up signing the papers of the guys who transferred. (Which is not to say that he kicked them out, of course - I'm sure he'd have wanted Mallett - but only he had the authority to keep them or let them go.)

if RR had any interest in running an offense tailored to our personnel, he would have started Steven Threet, the former four star prospect who later went on to start for Arizona State, instead of forcing us to endure Nick Sheridan because the latter was marginally more mobile.
He wouldn't have made use of Mallett's skills. What he's done at Arizona is the result of his learning experiences here.

How do you explain RR's success with throwing QBs at Tulane? That was prior to Michigan and worked very well for him. Wouldn't he do similar things with Mallet?

Shaun King was far more mobile than Mallett, for one thing... he averaged over 5 ypc at Tulane.
For another, we have RR's decision making: he started a walk-on, a purfunctory no-talent coach's kid, over a 4 star QB who later went on to start successfully in the Pac-12. He had no interest in even attempting to run anything but the spread-n-shred in full Pat White mode here. If he had we probably could have done better than at least the Toledo game.
December 4th, 2014 at 11:14 PM ^
Fact: Mallett left Michigan on his own because he didn't want to operate in a run-based offense.
Mallett played in 11 games as a freshman at Michigan in 2007, completing 43.3 percent of his passes for 892 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. He started three games for the injured Chad Henne, including games against Notre Dame and Penn State.
When Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr retired after the 2007 season, Michigan hired Rodriguez from West Virginia to replace him. Mallett knew Rodriguez's spread offense wasn't a good fit for him. Mallett decided to leave Ann Arbor after his first face-to-face meeting with Rodriguez.
"As far as what Coach Rodriguez wants his quarterbacks to do, we both agreed it wasn't for me," Mallett said. "I decided to take a pass and let him get his own guy in there to be successful."
After Mallett decided to leave Michigan, he also considered transferring to UCLA, Tennessee and Texas A&M. But Mallett chose the Razorbacks because of Petrino's pass-happy offense. Under Petrino, Arkansas broke eight school records in 2008, including season marks for pass attempts, pass completions, passing yards and passing yards per game.

They, being Mallett, RR, and Mallett's parents, that they met before the bowl game. That's the conversation Mallett refers to. It is after the bowl game that there is disagreement about communication. Whether or not RR did try to contact them or not after the bowl game, apparently the damage had been done...first impressions and all.
According to Mallett's mother, who has publicly stated that they all had a sit down, they didn't like what they were hearing from RR, that Ryan would have to compete running the zone read option. There was no way RM was going to win that competition so the Mallett family decided to look elsewhere for somebody wanting a pro-style QB, or at least somebody willing to utilize a pro-style QB as a pro-style QB.

that enamored of Mallett, who was a "different" kid. Mallett was rumored to be leaving no matter what.

the vast majority of our players, and especially guys like Manningham, Mallett, Arrington and Boren, were not suited to play in RR's system. Subsequint events on both sides of the ball proved that RR had zero interest in tailoring his system to our roster (there was no reason for Sheridan to ever see the field with Threet on the depth chart).
Lloyd, whether it chaps your ass or not, had a responsibility to his kids. If you think wins and losses are more important then you and I have very different views on college sports. Those kids came here because Lloys Carr promised to look out for them, and in many cases because he promised to prepare them for pro careers. It wasn't their fault or his that we hired a coach whose offense wasn't compatible with those promises
December 5th, 2014 at 10:22 AM ^
Because it's spiteful -- Carr appears to anoint himself good enough to coach those kids but RR suddenly isn't?! Bull!

1. Lloyd signed zero transfer papers.
2, He tried to keep players in the program, One notable player was about to transfer but Lloyd convinced him to stay,
These are facts, 100%
3, The LC recommended RR story has a legit basis. There is also legit reason ro doubt it.

This is great to hear. Sam has a "teaser" headline over at the pay section of Scout tonight which says "Is Lloyd Carr blocking Harbaugh at Michigan" or something like that. I hope he revises that or takes it down. Lloyd takes a lot of unnecesary shit from people who dont appreciate what he did for the school and accuse him of meddling in everything even today.
December 4th, 2014 at 10:47 PM ^
He revised it to 'setting the record straight on Lloyd Carr's stance on Harbaugh and his involvement' in the coaching search.
