Credit to Phil Coke

Submitted by jmdblue on

Listening to the Tigers in the office today.  We're getting shelled (9-0) in the fifth and the bullpen has gone from great shape at the beginning of the Cleveland series to desperate after yesterday's 13 inning cluster///.  Anyway, Coke got beaten up again last night and is in no shape to pitch today.  He may very well be released very shortly.  But he took the ball to try to eat a couple innings in a lost cause today in an attempt to avoid further damage to the staff.  Credit where it's due.

Are the Tigers going to look like the first place team or are they going to turn into the Houston Astros? This is the 4th game in a row that our pitching has gotten shelled.

I personally like Phil as a person, he never blames anyone but himself and he's the rare person that will actually talk to the media after the game. Like you posted credit to him for pitching today, but it's clear the $1.8 million invested in him this year is a waste and he should be put through waivers to call up Knebel or Miller again. Lots of roster moves likely coming after this one is over.

I read an interesting article about Coke, from his days growing up, to his struggles in the the minors and into his time with Detroit.  It was a pretty good read and made me like the guy as a person even if he drives me nuts most of the time on the mound.  It's a few years old now (Oct 2012) but is still worth five minutes' time.  It may have even been here where I came across it.

I haven't watched any today but I have it on the radio at work and it sounds as if he just doesn't have that, "out" pitch yet. With the breaking ball basically non-existent at this point on his career it was foolish for people to think he'd stick in the bullpen after Sanchez got healthy. Lots of potential in that arm but he needs a semblance of a slider or curve to stick in the show full time.

in fairness, ray appears to have a decent breaking ball and a solid changeup.  his fastball was topping out at 93 tho.  i thought he threw a bit harder than that.

that said, early on texas hit a few pretty good pitchers pitches which ended up  scoring a few runs.  then the tigers made a few bad defensive plays which cost him.  after that, he did seem to be a bit rattled and started walking guys.  then the hit parade blew the game open.

overall, he appears more polished as  a pitcher than i expected.  i would have much more faith in him as a lefty reliever out of the pen than coke and spot starter; like smyly did last year.

I don't get it.  Why are we giving credit to Coke for pitching?  That's his job, and he happens to stink at it.

but I'm guessing he could have begged off today.  If he had he could have avoided risk of another shellacing (sp) and the boos from the home crowd.  Nothing he does is likely to save his job.  He had little or nothing to gain by going in today, but he did and he apparently pitched pretty well.  He has struggled for a long time and he needs to be replaced, but he showed he has a pair today.  Cheers Lord.

why?  So some other tired arm could throw?  He threw 12 pitches to 4 batters (1.1 innings, not a couple).  He's thrown 6 innings in 12 days.  He ain't overworked.  As a lefty "specialist" , he should be prepared to throw almost every day.  I too am confused why we are singling him out for kudos.

I think it's more credit to the guy who has thrown 50+ pitches the last 2 days and is attempting to give Ausmus some extra innings for the betterment of the team. He's probably pitching with basically a noodle arm today (probably true on most days for Coke) but he's helping the team in a pinch.

I see where you're going, and it's positive. But Coke has been too bad for too long for me to cheers the guy for simply coming in and being bad some more.

Phil Coke has been around two years too long and every time he pitches a piece of me dies inside. I think too much is made about the "type of person" pro athletes are. I'm a selfish fan who prefers a jerk who performs over the nice guy who doesn't. Phil Coke has had more lives than a cat. He needs to be cut, and that's saying something when the rest of the bullpen is average at best.

Why don't we just give some "proper credit" to Dumars for sticking it out with the Pistons for about a century too long after doing something worth a damn too?!

Here's a better one... Coke answered the bell in the late rounds when he was getting his ass kicked and won't win the fight.

last week, I took this picture from the TV feed. I thought, "Who in their right mind would buy a Phil Coke Detroit Tigers jersey?"

With all of the great players to choose from, THIS GUY bought a Phil Coke Jersey.

The guy went into work today and did his job...so did I.  Credit due to both of us.  He pitched 1.2 innings yesterday, so I don't get the "no shape to pitch" reference.

job description is a multi-inning reliever... If he were an important part of the team I'm sure Ausmus wouldn't have put him in.  Whatever,  I just thought he showed some courage.

Do they need me to come in and give Ausmus a couple innings? I'll do it for half price, or hell, a third of the price, and although I haven't played since high school I could probably guarantee you the exact same result as what you'll get with Coke.
Ok, I'll do it for a hundred bucks and a jersey with my name on it.

A total of 56 hits given up by Tigers pitching over the past 4 games and today's game isn't even done yet. That averages to 14 opponent hits/game. More than Coke has been beaten up lately. But I do agree with everyone else. Coke is not trustworthy and I don't expect him to finish the season with the Tigers.

Ortega loads the bases no outs and they yank him for Coke.  Well, that's going to end real well.  I just turned the TV off and started cleaning.  Seriously, he is so bad I chose to clean my toilet over watching him pitch.
