"Oh boy. A thread about MSU right after they won the Rose Bowl. This will not go well."

Grow up. It's a mature move to acknowledge they played great, and it is a fact, that this makes the B1G look good, and that is good for us. Don't be a little kid
January 1st, 2014 at 8:42 PM ^
You can personally acknowledge they played well without starting a congratulations thread on a Michigan board. And are you serious about this being good for us? Nothing about this is good for Michigan.
January 1st, 2014 at 8:58 PM ^
I'm sure you weren't kicked off the board for being a huge douche and are now using a different avatar.
I just listened to Musburger say and I quote, "This is a huge, huge win for the Big Ten Conference". He's absolutely correct. The headlines earlier were that the B1G sucked because only Nebraska won their game. If the conference wins both BCS games, that will look much better for us next year when it comes to playoffs and rankings. I have written enough about how idiotic to root against your conference and hope the B1G looses any of their bowl games. Just remember this next season when the talking heads say that the top four teams in the country should all be chosen from the SEC.
Also, I just watched Season 3 of Downton Abbey and am appalled at how poorly you managed your estate. Not only were you incompetent, but you were opposed to any changes Matthew suggested to modernize the farms and wouildn't even think about operating for a profit. It seems like Lord Grantham is running the coaching staff at Michigan.
January 1st, 2014 at 9:17 PM ^
So instead of 1-5, the Big Ten is now 2-4 in bowls. So the perception is that the conference is mediocre instead of pitiful. And this helps us how exactly? Do you think the marginal difference in how the country views the Big Ten for one year outweighs our in-state rival building a strong program and becoming relevant on the national stage?
January 1st, 2014 at 9:27 PM ^
and start to do this consistently, if/when our team begins to win our conference, the talking heads won't say that were not deserving of a high ranking because they know that the teams we had to beat on the way to the top are competitive with the best. BCS games are more important than the Copper Bowl.
Also, it sounds like you think that if Stanford had won the Rose Bowl, then MSU didn't beat our ass during the season?
If State beat everyone in the conference but looked really bad in their bowl game, it would make the teams they beat look worse. If they handled their bowl game, the loss they gave teams doesn't look so bad.
It's like everyone excusing our loss to Alabama last year. I'd rather lose to Alabama than Toledo. But it seems that to you, there is no difference in losing to an undefeated national champion and a 5 loss MAC team.
January 1st, 2014 at 9:41 PM ^
If you're delusional enough to believe that MSU winning Rose Bowls is good for Michigan, there really isn't going to be a lot I can say to change your mind.
January 1st, 2014 at 10:00 PM ^
and ultimately good for the teams in the B1G. Or do you think that a B1G team winning the Rose Bowl is bad for the B1G?
I just think your thinking is very shortsighted. The only thing that will help Michigan's recruiting is Michigan winning. Not their rivals losing.

While I would certainly concede that the success of another program carries importance in competitive recruiting, I wouldn't necessarily call it the biggest thing. Look at how uncompetitive we've been with Ohio since 2006, and yet we're able to recruit with them. We've been uncompetitive with MSU since RR and have had more success in recruiting than them. Clearly recruiting is less of a factor than some people think it is.
Don't get me wrong, I see what you are saying, but think about how much better Texas A&M is regarded now that they play in a more respected conference. I wish people would talk about the B1G like they talk about the SEC. Just because our team sucks doesn't mean I want our conference to suck. The quickest way to gain more respect is to win in a conference people respect. Otherwise, someday we could be like Ohio and go undefeated in the B1G and still have to worry about being passed by a 1 loss SEC team to go to the MNC. How the mighty have fallen.

MSU is going to finish the season ranked, at worst, #4 in the country. We also don't have to worry about getting into NCG b/c there is a playoff, and the big ten winner is going to get a spot every year (unless they are a 3-loss team).
MSU has ascended during the worst years in recent B1G history, and nobody is batting an eye while throwing superlatives at them.
Bottom line is, win you're league and you're golden. Lose, and you suck. And MSU winning does more harm than good.
January 1st, 2014 at 9:29 PM ^
why don't you tell us again how you know how to beat MSU's defense. That's right you already did like 20 times in the game thread.
January 1st, 2014 at 9:13 PM ^
I think you have to be a little careful with that. Although it may boost conference perception, a Rose Bowl win gives MSU some national-level press. This means that they could begin to beat us out for recruits that we want.

They have one of the best defenses I have seen since the 1997 Michigan Defense. They deserve credit and Michigan is on notice! If we didn't know it already, there are two very serious threats for the Big Ten and this coaching staff needs to take notes on how to get it done. It is with agressive playcalliing on defense, not passive bend don't break.

I hear you, but it was like Stanford was just completely ignorant about what MSU does. MSU is super prepared and gamble like hell that they know what's coming. Stanford either didn't realize this or thought that after taking a few shots in the first quarter it wouldn't matter and they could just inflict their will on MSU. Either way, it was a miscalculation that they were unwilling or unable to correct even during the 2-minute drill. A huge coaching failure.
The game also exemplified my problem with Stanford all season long. Purposefully running a sytem that gains 4 yards a shot leaves little room for error. It's why they lost twice in the regular season. It's why MSU was able to survive the first quarter haymakers and come back and win. Gaffney is a nice running back who doesn't lose yards, but he doesn't hit home runs either. He should have had about half his carries this game. Even though Hogan isn't great, they shoulc have continued to take shots downfield.

I think Shaw has been a coasting a bit on Harbaugh's recruits. Last year he barely beat 8-5 Wisconsin, and this year couldn't do much against MSU. It's a good team, but this feels like the beginning of a return to semi-mediocrity down on the farm.

I guess he's done okay recruiting, but most of that Offensive Line is a holdover from Harbaugh. But I was incorrect in saying his recruiting has fallen off; it is perfectly fine.
