Chad Henne re-signs with Jacksonville, and good for him

Submitted by stephenrjking on

Not every player becomes a star, or even a starter. But I have long believed that a Michigan man who hangs in the NFL for a few years, even as a backup, is doing well for themselves. Financially speaking even the NFL minimum is rather good, and I'm happy for them.

Good for Chad Henne. He's turned into a career backup, but that is a legit job in sports that not everybody can do well. I'm glad he's still plugging along. He'll still get a chance to play when there's an injury or something, and he's a guy that gives his team a chance to win a game without its starter. Not bad at all.

Jaguars re-signed backup QB Chad Henne.

none of the wear and tear of getting smashed every week in live games. Very little stress comared to being 1st string, as even if 1st string goes down, no one expects that you to be more than just competent.  Any play beyond that and you get to be a hero for a short time.

You also usually are paid much better than league minimum.  Sounds lik a life I can get behind. (of course my mentality is not how those guys get into that position).

I would pick Rodney Peete as the perfect back-up QB. After a great college career, he got 16 years in the NFL, got enough career games to show what he had (and what he didn't), and got well paid to hold a clip-board.

And at the end of the day, he got to go home to Holly Robinson.

Like George Gershwin said - Nice work if you can get it.

Well shit yeah! NFL Backup QB is one of the best jobs in the world. He will end each year earning upwards of $2 million, risking very little injury or ridicule, traveling on the company's expense, and having access to the best exercise and medical equipment money can buy. Not to mention Henne is in a beautiful coastal city, rather than being a backup in, idk pick some random horrible, cold city...say Buffalo.

Chad Henne is smarter than you and I and Chad Henne has made a good life for himself.

Chad Henne has a fu man chu mustache.

I respect Chad Henne.

Wow I had never looked into the NFL's retirement income vehicles.

So, if Chad retires in 2 years after 11 years in the league, he will begin to receive $62,040 per year from the NFL when he turns 55 until he dies. That's in addition their matches to whatever he's contributed to his 401k, which they match 2 to 1 up to $28,000 per year. That's not too bad, NFL.

It still requires careful money management by players, but if you can become a professional athlete and manage your money well, you're set forever.

To be fair, I have never spent 1 second outside of a vehicle in Jacksonville, but isn't it ranked one of the best places to live? All I know is that it has the most visited beach in the US and is close to St. Augustine.

US News ranked it a better place to live than Atlanta and Honolulu, among others, so I figured it was pretty nice.

Only one minor edit -- backup quarterbacks definitely do risk injury. Often times starters are wearing the no-contact jerser and for the defense to get live-looks it's either the backup or third team. Oh and in general, very high risk of injury playing football professionally regardless of position / string.

Other than that - right on! Long live Chad Henne

Been in Buffalo for 15 years. First 7 or 8 there wasn't much here, but there has been a renaissance the last 7 or 8. Lots of cool restaurants and bars. NY taxes are high, but the suburban schools are great and you can live like a king on a moderate income. No snow in the city or Northtowns for the most part, but there is a lake effect snow belt south of the city where the ski hills are. (Holiday Valley is far better than Nubs Nob.). In the summer you can own a boat, or find a friend who does. Friend of mine from here went to Michigan because his family befriended Todd Collins. Cool story bro. You know what Jacksonville has? Meth. That's it. Meth heads and old people. Not a tooth among them.

Every season my fantasy football team name has been a pun based off his name. I plan to keep it going until he retires and then I'll switch to a new UM NFL'er. Good to see there will be more Henne puns for the next few years at least!
