Every one of these stories makes me think of a chubby, pimply-face high school kid getting his hopes all up cause Verlander got into an arguement with Upton.

I really don't think JH is going to go to a "project" team like Oakland. They're terrible. What makes anyone think JH's hard ass tactics are going to work any better across the Bay? That old school style doesn't play well in the NFL locker room. I don't think JH stays in the NFL just for the sake of staying in the NFL. I think he looks for the right fit. In A2 he'd have total control and no one would grief him about anything as long as he wins. He can be all the hard ass he wants and the kids will love him for it.

I feel like the whole his approach won't work in the NFL thing is WAAAAYYYY overblown. Last I checked when he got there in 2011 the last winning record the 49ers had was in 2002 and he's been to the NFC title game every single year since he's been there and made previously on his way out out of the league Alex smith into a viable QB. Then when he had the audacity to go with CK after Smith's concussion to hoards of criticism, he went to the super bowl and almost won it. The NFL more than anything else is about winning, no matter how you get it done and that more than anything is what Michigan needs right now.

Singletary was not given much of a chance to right the ship. He had things going in the right direction the only piece he was missing was a decent QB. Alex and Troy just weren't getting it done.

Here's the problem with Jim's approach. He's old  school and that approach can be good but it has a shelf life with NFL players who like to be treated with respect, who don't care what you did before and who make more than the coach.

If you can't win the hearts and minds of the players how are you gonna win a ring? There are not only reports of issues with the front office but also with players. Even the seasoned veterans aren't given much leeway on that team because of how Jim rules with an iron fist. They're complaining. This is not a recipe for success.

Look at Pete Carroll, he's a players coach. That type of approach has much more mileage in an NFL locker room.

Jim's style is much more suited for the NCAA.

But if he's not winning, holy hell will his life suck here.  Everyone was all over RR's case for not being the "right fit".  Then along comes Brady Hoke, the opposite of RR in terms of being the right fit.  Right up until he started losing.  So much for being the right fit.

We've shown our true colors.  The only "right fit" for us is that you have to win.  Everything else is smoke.

My point is Jim has already had success at a Power 5 school and everywhere else he's gone including the NFL. It's highly likely Jim will be successful in A2. He knows how to recruit and he knows how to coach up kids. He knows how to hire effective DC's and he knows how to manage games.

There's the "right fit" and then there's the right fit. One based on conjecture the other based on reality. RR could coach up offense but couldn't pick a decent DC to save his life. Hoke is the opposite. If you could fuse them into one coach you might have something there. Harbaugh is that. He's the real right fit or perhaps more accurately he's the best fit.

Winning has always been the main thing that matters and it always will be. Our colors are the same as any other successful college football programs fanbase.

It's all about egos.

Trent Baalke (GM) thinks he's primarily responsible for the niners' success, and Harbaugh thinks he's primarily responsible for the niners' success. Harbaugh hasn't been happy with a lot of the recent drafts and as a result wants more input on personnel decisions. Baalke obviously doesn't want this at all and thinks Harbaugh should stay in his lane as coach. Add in the fact that Harbaugh is a control freak with a grating personality and you've got a recipe for conflict.

Look at last two coach searches.

The JH's don't want the job. All but offered it last time. Declined. Miles too. You can pretend it didn't happen, but you know it did.

They ended up with rich rod after miles have cold shoulder first, and then Schiano did the same. Again, you can pretend it didn't happen, but it did.

So third choice twice.

I know I think it's a destination job for the best candidates, but apparently not so much. Can hope Jim's situation has changed enough & he loves and wants to scar his alma mater enough (know he'll believe he can), but not much hope there either given his words & actions & choices past decade plus.

Man, wish it weren't so, but we'll just have to hope we hit Bo gold with an unproven again

RJWolvie

...you'd have followed the circus of discussion. The repeated "not interested"s. In round one, the first cold shoulder was from Miles, then all center of discussion moved to Schiano, not interested again. Then RR was our man, "as he was all along". The way it played in round two was eerily similar, excepting that second center of discussion in that case was Miles, and admittedly only very brief & not at all clear any real substance to those circus stops, and then hoke was our man all along, meaning at least since Harbough have us cold shoulder.

I guess you understood events differently than I

You have to look beyond the surface of those events to discover what really happened. Some of it is lack of interest some is bad timing and a lot of it is bad search management. Martin and Brandon did not do a good job with their football coaching searches. Both turned into bumbling cluster fucks. Not sure why they wouldn't try to do the best job they can with a decision that will likely define their administration but...If the rumored Lloyd Carr involvement with the Les Miles talks had not happened maybe Les would be in A2. Brandon wasn't going to get Harbaugh because of bad timing. Harbaugh wanted the NFL. Now he's done that and he's not getting the love in SF the timing might be better. Timing might be better for Miles now as well. He's never been truly appreciated in Baton Rouge and that's not getting any better as of late.

I was at the SF game yesterday and (jokingly) tried to boo Harbaugh.  Unfortunately no one joined in.  Was really hoping the Eagles could pull out a win.  Can't be much more disheartening than losing a game when your defense gave up 0 points.

How do you know Harbaugh and miles were ever offered. From what I've read none of the three were ever offered and brandon wanted hoke the entire time. Jim Harbaugh was trying to get out last offseason. Was pushing for himself to be traded to the Browns. He wants more control of personal, him and the GM are consistently clashing. If we give him a lucrative offer there is nothing to suggest he won't take. There plenty of more likely candidates. Dan Mullen is the best second option IMO.

...I'm only going by what I saw & heard (& how I interpreted those, of course) the last two times. That Miles was the guy, then that we wanted Schiano, until Rich Rod was our choice all along seemed plain as day at the time. And Hoke was equally clearly at least second to Harbough the first time (I'll concede that flirtation with Miles seemed very tepid round two.) my point stands: Harbough has not wanted the job before. But I agree with folks saying throw everything at him & hope or pray, as you prefer, that things (& our persuasivene$$) have increased!

We should kiss Harbaugh's ass and give him everything he wants and whatever it takes to get him to come here.

Why?

Because

1) He's a Michigan man (I normally don't subscribe to this, but hear me out!)

2) His criticisms were legit!

3) He can field a team that is not only amazinng athletically, but also academically.

4) He has the fire, I know some people like the Pete Carroll thing, but Pete Carroll's type of attitude doesn't work well in a state where the temperature is below freezing most of the winter.Michigan coaches require grit, he has it.

5)  He's smart as fuck. Take whatever you want from that, the guy is a genius.  Brady Hoke only fielded a great MAC team because he had the easiest recruiting job in the country "oh, i used to be the only "special coach" under lloyd carr, hey every great piece of talent that the power 5 doesn't suck up, come play for me!  It's obvious that Hoke can learn from the best and repeat what they do, but has no ability to form new thoughts of his own to win the chess match. He's like playing against the computer, the one built a long time ago. Harbaugh is like Stephen fucking Hawking in comparison.   What does this school need in a football coach to truly be excillent? How about a Rhodes fucking scholar as a coach?

6) He can win at any level, period. Three years in the NFL and two trips to the NFC championship game and one to the superbowl. All of the defeats were in the range of "holy shit"

7) The stadium will set an attendence record, the team will instantly improve, and we won't be talking about winning BIG TEN championships anymore that we don't even come close to winning as it is. We will be talking about national championships, and likely be in the hunt.

A former Michigan player, an academic scholar, a coach that turns everything he touches into gold, and someone who has the character to have a fucking statue of themselves in front of the stadium someday.

Pay him whatever it takes.  He not only takes us back to an elite level of football, he would do it while making us known as the team that did it while having an elite level of academics amongst players.

Maybe the president who doesn't give a shit about sports would like the idea of a coach who wants to field a team strong in academics that happens to crush their opponents, and a coach who demands nothing less than excellence.

I agree with everything you say here. Throw everything we can into trying to get him to come here (including the idea of a statue to him, next to Bo, as the great rescuers of Meeeechigan Football!!!) it's pretty much the only remotely plausible, even though only remotely I fear, way I can see that we're going to survive this without MSU post-60s amount of time in oblivion.

Since I've said this twice now on various threads, I'll say it again:

I have a good friend in the 49ers front office. I asked him Saturday about the potential of Harbaugh leaving the organization, and he flat out guffawed. The execs love him, the players love him, and Jim is happy in the Bay Area. Anything suggesting otherwise is horsepucky.

You're R-O-N-G rong, Neon Deion.

Does your friend have any idea why, if suggestions of dischord between Harbaugh and Baalke and/or the players are such horsepucky, they've been so persistent?  Rumors of locker room/front office strife have been trickling out since the 49ers started 1-2 last year, and the frequency with which Harbaugh and Baalke publically professed their mutual admiration during the offseason is suspicious in a "methinks they doth protest too much" sort of way.

Ass and has a temper problem. That alienated some new players who complained to management. Sal paolantonio said something similar on talk radio last week. Apparently, it's new players that don't like harbaugh.

Deion and Trent may just be hearing exaggerated reports from 1 or 2 guys.

Also, just read harbaughs responses in the linked article and imagine he said that as the HC of Michigan. The arrogant blue bloods would go crazy.
