Per Brock Huard on the Herd, interesting JJ comp

Submitted by umjgheitma on March 6th, 2024 at 10:21 PM

On The Herd (I know some have issues with Colin), Brock Huard was giving combine takes on the '24 QBs and he compared JJ to Donovan McNabb regarding the gravity he had with those around him and ability. Thought that was an interesting comp and wondered if those here would agree if JJ resembles a modern day McNabb?

Just some fun offseason discussion.

the ability to extend plays with good athleticism

Can’t the same be said for a lot of quarterbacks? Were there any other criteria or qualifiers that went into this comparison?

This seems so random and methinks there are several other QBs that would’ve been a better comp. The differences between JJ and McNabb seem… vast, I guess?

Also slight phrasing detail but “Per Brock Huard…” makes it sound as if he is reporting on actual news or issuing a report. Why not just include McNabb in the title as well instead of clickbaiting the board? An easier, more accurate title would’ve been “Well-documented mouth breather, Brock Huard, thinks JJ  is comparable to D. McNabb. Wtf?”

I must add that nothing is more cringey than using "methinks" in a post

Online nerds randomly break out weird language like that as if they're living in medieval times.  I would have to resist the urge to dunk my friend's head in the toilet if one of them ever said that in real life.

Don't see it as a lifelong eagles fan.  I feel everyone around JJ would run through a brick wall for him.  McNabb not so much.  Decision making not great. When McNabb came out of college he was much lighter but he got to big and couldn't throw or move as well.

Get out of my head Will. Randomly I was going to post this same hawt take! If JJ goes as the 3rd QB and has a hall of fame career (yeah I know I need to settle down - too much morning joe) will the NFL ever underestimate a U of M QB again? He may single handedly have me watching NFL on a weekly basis again.

One pretty unique thing about JJ is he has zero issues with his character and makeup. I can't think of anything that he has done since he was a recruit that would be viewed as a negative (or even a question mark) in the NFL background checks. The guy was just all about Michigan , Harbaugh, teammates, and winning.

I'm ashamed to say I responded to some MSU jabroni on Twitter claiming that the video of JJ warming up in the hotel conference hallway was proof that so much of what he does is "performative" and that he's always "looking for the camera."

Dude is charismatic and so yeah, cameras follow him...hyping up his teammates, downplaying his own contribution, quietly meditating before games, and daring to get a few practice reps in during the combine, like literally every other player does.

I don't claim any special knowledge about whether JJ will be a successful NFL QB, because that's really, really difficult and the success rate is pretty low. But boy, I hope he does, just to dunk on all the MSU and OSU morons claiming certain knowledge that he's terrible and bound to fail.

Actually, I would go so far as to say that JJ's school (Naz Academy) did not have a very well supported athletic program.  Traditionally, they sucked in sports at most things and did not get good in football until very recently.

McNabb's school on the other hand was a sports juggernaut.

McNabb was at Mt. Carmel and I watched him destroy my alma-mater almost 10 years after Gordon Tech (my -Polk High School- moment) won the 1983-6A IL. State Championship over Buffalo Grove.

Donovan was a beast and he showed up against Michigan against Syracuse.

Had no issues watching him lose Superbowls with Andy Reid.

I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt on a limited number of bad social media posts by college kids. I was in college in the years when Facebook was limited to those with college .edu email addresses, and that degree of exclusivity really helped me and many of my peers avoid embarrassment.

Giving kids a megaphone is going to lead to some uneven outcomes. As long as it's not a pattern it's probably not indicative of some deeper flaw in JJ's character (or any other player who has 1 or 2 cringey social media posts).

Yea, Andrew Tate is certainly scum, but it's not like JJ is sharing a particularly bad clip of him talking about how to sex-traffic women or something.  It's just generic motivational bullshit that his algorithm spits out to JJ, because JJ likes motivational bullshit.  JJ isn't vetting every Instagram repost to make sure the author isn't accused of a crime.

They could've possibly tackled or covered him, but the staff fundamentally didn't believe in running QBs, even when they saw them do damage up close. This tendency had shown itself before (Rickey Foggie, others) and would again (Armanti Edwards, others). Odd, given that Rick Leach wasn't a distant memory yet.

I was at that 1998 game vs. McNabb. He made us look silly. It was 38-7 before we scored three TDs in the 4th vs. 2nd stringers.

JJ is Brett Favre but with better legs to scramble. Tries to make a few plays when it isn't there (witness: overturned Bama INT on the 1st drive when a throwaway was clearly the only call).

He is 27-1 as a starter.

Terrible comp.

I'm not sure JJ has a comp when you talk about a guy with his arm talent, that teammates gravitate towards, is as selfless as JJ, and has the other physical tools. And if you want someone who is his size, it really gets tough to find a comp.

That doesn't mean he's going to be Tom Brady 2.0 - it just means there is no one to compare him to.

Aaron Rodgers is probably his play style comp, especially with the tools. But Rodgers is polarizing. Mahomes is the next obvious one in terms of playing style.

Again, he is a LONG way from either of those guys and there is no guarantee he gets there. But when you watch him play, those two certainly come to mind.

Both have huge arms, they can run and extend plays or pick up first downs, they're going to throw the "no, no, no...yes, yes, yes" ball. And they're lethal when they're on...some of the best passes you'll ever see. They also improvise better than anyone, anyone remember JJs flip pass to Edwards? I believe it was against IU.

Mahomes and Rodgers when it comes to playing style.

I just hope he lands in a good system where he can develop and have a long career.
