5* ATH "blown away" by visit to Maryland; Mich still a leader

DMV-area ATH(TE/DE) Nyckoles Harbor could have a significant impact on the 2023 Michigan recruiting class. According to Steve Wiltfong of 247, leaders are Michigan and Maryland, with the other finalists being South Carolina, LSU, and UGA. More at the links (if you are a 247 subscriber).

Official visit to #Maryland blows away five-star ATH Nyckoles Harbor and his family, a trip that included time spent with the university president, AD and one of the top orthopedic surgeons in the country. Story here: https://t.co/g7uKPj6CUh @Jeff_Ermann

I live in NW DC, and often golf at the U of Maryland.  I cannot possibly fathom what a recruit experienced there.  The campus is a hideous expression of red-brick nightmares, and reminds of an army base perhaps built in the 20's-30's.

The adjoining neighborhoods are austere working-class- not that there's anything wrong with it, one just won't mistake it for an interesting major-college suburb, like Tempe, Austin, or Palo Alto.  Seems like a very uninspiring place to go to college.

The University of Maryland is a lot of things, but a school with a shitty campus it is not. I’d certainly rank it as one of my favorite campuses to walk before or after a Michigan win.

More important for an athlete is the fact that their training facilities are brand new (I think it opened this year IIRC) and are top-notch.

And yeah, College Park isn’t that exciting once you leave the campus (unless you like IKEA), and overall the area is mostly suburbs, but that is changing fast. Anyway, if you need a ton of excitement, you’re 10 minutes on the metro from downtown DC.

I would keep him for at least one more year but you could see a scenario where the bottom falls out next year and they go 3-9 or 4-8 next year. There's no gimmies on their schedule next year besides Towson and maybe Northwestern. But the Northwestern game is late October when Maryland tends to fade and the Wildcats start to benefit from Chicago shit storms.

Did Taulia announce he is going to the draft?  I haven't seen anything but could have missed it.

If not, he still has two years of eligibility remaining.

My biggest issue that I would say about Maryland is that the stadium is half empty on gameday unless they are playing Michigan, OSU or PSU in which case 65% of the crowd is there for the other team.

This is the type of kid that Locksley is dying to land, to help them take the next step of beating the upper-tier teams. He can sustain a bowl-eligible program on the good DMV talent, but he's never been able to land one of the elite local talents (along with his predecessors). There are a lot of obstacles to overcome at UMd. I don't know if Harbor will be the first, but one of these days, especially with NIL possibilities, one of them will decide to stay at home, and it seems natural that Locksley would be the coach to do it.

I never thought we'd ever have to worry about Maryland killing any of our plans.  Alas, here we are.  Guaranteed NIL money has to be part of the equation, or am I missing some amazing aspects about Maryland itself that puts Michigan to shame?
