I'll take an ice cold Goebel's on a hot and humid Detroit afternoon.

How about Drewrys?
December 13th, 2023 at 8:26 PM ^
Wasn't Drewry's the one that featured the Royal Canadian Mountie? I loved it when my Dad bought that as I was a big Sergeant Preston fan!

Yukon King was my "dog".

I am just here for the Sargent Preston comments.
Imagine Sargent Preston in the portal.
How much NIL you spending to bring him to A2?
December 13th, 2023 at 8:27 PM ^
I have a creek flowing through my backyard. This summer I was messing around in it and found a Drewry's bottle from the late 60s. That was along with old 7up, pepsi, coke and a couple of others that were unidentifiable.
December 13th, 2023 at 9:29 PM ^
Which one? Hickory? Keelo, maybe? Yellow? Probably not Pipestone, Love, or Lemon.
December 13th, 2023 at 7:52 PM ^
Yeesh! I didn't know anyone even remembered that stuff! It's what my grandad and dad drank when I was growing up. At grandpa's funeral, my brother brought a case and we all popped one open. I don't think any of us got through a whole can. Gotdam that was some nasty-ass beer!
December 13th, 2023 at 9:15 PM ^
That "nasty-ass" beer got me to my freshman year at UM. My Dad was the distributor for that beer in Kalamazoo along with Hamm's and Old Style, and various other small regional beers. I had some awesome parties when I was a senior in High School in 1976. There was only one rule: No Bud or Miller or Pabst in the house. Eventually those beers forced him to sell and we moved to Traverse City where he opened a restaurant. And that restaurant got me the rest of the way through. I still have some wicked cool original props and glasses, and a bottle of that nasty-ass beer that has never been opened. So, in a way, I graduated from Michigan due to that beer, and I will always have a fond place in my heart for it. But yeah, craft beer is delicious!

falstaff in the little yellow plastic crate, they had puzzles under the caps.

Good old "Fallflat" with the bottle cap puzzles! Brings back some great memories.

$10 a case including deposit when I was in school lol
December 14th, 2023 at 12:31 PM ^
Don't get me wrong - I also have fond memories of Goebels during my childhood. But that doesn't remove the fact that still tastes bad!
December 13th, 2023 at 8:28 PM ^
Golden Goebel's endorsed by comedian George Goebel who did one of the voices in the Frosty the snowman cartoon.

Let's just Stroh a party.
December 14th, 2023 at 6:08 AM ^
my dad used to do commercials and ads for strohs. i'm looking at one right now, he's holding a longneck stroh's bottle and the caption in the ad says, 'if you think all beers taste alike you should try STROH'S, flavor brewed at 2000 degrees - it makes the delicious difference'.
December 14th, 2023 at 8:08 AM ^
They needed to brew it at that temperature to kill all the Detroit River water impurities!
December 14th, 2023 at 9:35 AM ^
in the 1950's you probably would've been fine drinking from the detroit river, or at least if you were upriver from the rouge/trenton area.

And who can forget this Dick the Bruiser classic?

After the Brewery on Gratiot is Gone
December 14th, 2023 at 9:37 PM ^
I still plug those lyrics in when I hear the original. Definitely a classic.
Later I worked inside Brewery Park, one of those green glass/red brick office buildings on the old brewery location. I could see Comerica from my window.
December 14th, 2023 at 8:38 AM ^
Can you post a pic of that ad? I'd love to see it.
December 14th, 2023 at 9:33 AM ^
i don't know how to post a pic from my phone, but if you were comfortable giving me a throw-away email i'd contact you back channels. dad did all sorts of live TV commercials and you're old enough to have at least a vague memory of the some of them - for instance, he did live PBR commercials, motorola, things like that. a jingle i remember he shared with us, 'what'll you have? pabst blue ribbon, pabst blue ribbon beer!'
December 14th, 2023 at 11:22 AM ^
Ah, Goebel's. 5 bucks a case in the early 80s. My friend John and I would collect empties from our respective houses, pitch in a buck or two each, and have a poor college kids on break festival. Weidemann's was another ridiculously cheap option.

More info. When I saw 5'9", I figured he was more of a slot guy, but the vast majority of his snaps are at outside CB. 2 years of eligibility left.
December 13th, 2023 at 6:40 PM ^
#3 CB and #33 overall in the portal according to 247. Seems like a nice pickup if we can make it happen.
December 13th, 2023 at 7:33 PM ^
247’s portal rankings also have Chilis as the top qb and #2 player overall. After watching some tape that’s well odd
December 13th, 2023 at 10:46 PM ^
FWIW - the 247 portal rankings seem to put a lot of stock into total potential impact (skill weighted with available years of eligibility) as much as immediate impact. This is why E. Hausmann was rated as the #4 overall transfer last year when he came to M as a true Soph.
What seems to sometimes skew the rankings for young players is that they weigh college productivity very heavily over HS rankings, even for true Frosh. Hausmann had a good freshman season = high ranking. --------- Moore struggled when thrown in the fire as starter at UCLA while Chiles put up good numbers -- even though his time was limited to garbage time and 60+% of his rushing and passing yardage came in blowouts against UC Davis and Stanford. (To be fair Chiles was a top-60 recruit == so relatively close to Moore (4) out of HS.)

Yup. He's a combination of Kenneth Grant and Kenneth Grant.
