THAT'S THE SPIRIT. User "Number 7" on the correct way to take all information:

1.  All good news is good news.  (Because it's good news.  Duh.)

2.  All bad news is good news.  (Because it's probably just a smokescreen, because timing.)

and, thanks to this,

3.  No news is good news.  (Because also timing.)

Don't forget "4. In case of 2, annihilate the messenger."

ON HARBAUGH'S INTEREST LEVEL. I like it when NFL guys fire off things that I know aren't true, because then I can rail against 'em. It provides a level of certainty that's rare in any coaching search, and especially this one featuring a primary candidate who's employed until the end of December.

So: I know that the Michigan end of things referred to here…

…certainly does not think they're going to have to move on, at least not to the point of being "convinced" about anything. There was a meeting of some variety—executed slightly better than Jeremy Foley's—but the aftermath of it has not seen any lack of pursuit or increased focus on guys other than Harbaugh. Since Michigan didn't advertise it to the nation, we can't be certain exactly who was involved. I've heard it was high-level, possibly a Hackett-Harbaugh face-to-face.

I don't know what's going to happen, but the NFL-facing sources have been so strident about things that I know are not true multiple times that I take every new report from them with a grain of salt. If they end up being right it's not going to be because they're super plugged in.

ALSO HARBAUGH. Heard that he took in the OSU game with a bunch of former teammates who were asking him to fix things, to which he said (paraphrased) 1) you'll have to wait a bit here and 2) I'll have to get paid like a top five college coach.

The upshot of the first bit: Harbaugh isn't going to to anything that would be seen as abandoning his team, even as their playoff odds get extremely long. Don't expect something until the 28th, if Michigan is still waiting then.

The upshot of the second: I don't think we're talking Godfather money here, but something approximately Saban/Meyer yes. This was apparently the subject of a brief tug-of-war at the AD/prez/regents level when Schlissel balked at the idea and the regents were like "no, actually, this makes sense because X and Y." They are good to go for compensation, with donor aid.

UNLESS! That is, unless Harbaugh gets canned before the season's over. That would be completely nuts on San Francisco's part, but guys who cover the team are broaching the idea:

With a trip to Seattle coming Sunday, where the 49ers haven't won since 2011, before Russell Wilson was drafted, there's a reasonable chance Harbaugh doesn't last the season.

The precedent is Harbaugh's predecessor Mike Singletary, who was fired in Week 16 of 2010, after San Francisco was eliminated from playoff contention. That year, the Seahawks won the NFC West going 7-9.

If they're so inclined Michigan could step in and save the 49ers a hunk of money. With Harbaugh's contract an asset, it's unlikely he gets fired-fired; SF would probably not want him across the Bay and if so would want to get at least a mid-round pick out of it. Speaking of across the Bay…

MARK DAVIS IS A ROMULAN
DON'T WORK FOR THE ROMULANS BECAUSE THEY'LL EVENTUALLY ENSLAVE YOU AND PUT YOU TO WORK IN THE DILITHIUM MINES OF PENTAX IV, THAT'S MY MOTTO
SHUT UP, IT'S A GOOD MOTTO
AM I MINING UNTIL I DIE ON A ROCK IN THE DEMILITARIZED ZONE? NO? QED.

THIS BETTING MARKET IS ALL OVER THE PLACE. After pulling their Harbaugh prop over the weekend, it returns with the Raiders a heavy favorite:

And then a heavier one:

That wild swing is likely because of the weekly NFL reporter scoffing and the fact that Harbaugh talked to Raiders owner Prince Valium after San Francisco lost to his team on Sunday. I'm a little skeptical Harbaugh's going to take the worst possible NFL job, one that might not even be in Oakland next year, but that ain't good. On the other hand:

And they just dropped the M odds to 4-to-1 as money comes in on them once again. Woo!

PROPS TO NFL LLOYD CHRISTMAS, THOUGH. This is a good quote:

What did they talk about? I asked Davis, who laughed and said:

“I told him, ‘You stole our dysfunction!” Davis said. “‘That’s supposed to be our thing!’”

THE PLAN B TIER. With everyone laser-focused on Harbaugh there continues to be little clarity as to who might be the backup plan. Les Miles said he had not been contacted by Michigan, and I continue to believe that he's facing too much internal opposition to get a serious sniff.

Sam Webb has had a couple posts on Greg Schiano and Steve Addazio in the last couple days, names that alarm and boggle.  The most recent was at least about how Addazio is a more likely candidate than Schiano; I choose to interpret that information as "we do not want Greg Schiano so passionately we would choose to hire Steve Addazio over him." Corroborating is Steve Lorenz, who says all the noise about Schiano has come from his end($), with no Michigan folk mentioning his name.

That leaves Addazio's presence. Bald Brady Hoke makes no sense as any kind of candidate except to your crazy old coot grandfather who has all his savings in gold and doesn't trust the FDIC. Unfortunately, we have a lot of those hanging around. FWIW, I haven't heard one thing about him.

I don't think anyone has a strong grasp on who Plan B is. Rivals is pushing guys like Sean Payton and Bret Bielema; meanwhile on WTKA this morning Sam was talking about Jim Mora. I have heard diverse and sundry names, none of which stand out from the crowd. Clint Brewster's five guys not named Harbaugh or Miles seems like a realistic baseline: David Shaw, Mora, Dan Mullen, Kyle Whittingham… sigh… Addazio.

GaryPinkel702[1]

kind of looks like Scott Bakula

PINKEL? Seeing chatter about Mizzou's Gary Pinkel, but… like… okay remember what happened when Nebraska hired Mike Riley? Gary Pinkel is a bit like that. He's obviously got a much better track record than Riley what with his five ten-win seasons in the last eight years, but he would be 63 by the time he coached one game at M. By the time he got his guys in here he'd be ready to retire.

Pinkel may be an excellent coach, but is he that much better than a guy a decade younger than him? Coaching transitions suck; do you want to guarantee yourself another one in 5-7 years?

HE DOES THIS EVERY YEAR. One of the most attractive candidates on the B tier is on the verge of signing an extension:

Scott Stricklin expects a contract extension for Dan Mullen soon.

"Dan, in his defense, his focus has been recruiting, being in bowl prep," Stricklin said. "But I'm optimistic we can get that wrapped up pretty soon."

Ah but there's a  catch with the headline here:

Mississippi state law doesn't allow for a state employee's contract to extend more than four years. In each of the five previous seasons Stricklin and Mullen have come to an agreement. This year appears no different.

Iowa fans envy Mississippi State law so hard right now. But anyway: because of this law MSU has gone back to Mullen every year for a pro forma extension. That statement from the AD is based on hope and expectation and not nearly as meaningful as it would be otherwise.

There's been a bare minimum of Mullen chatter aside from some national guys on Scout saying he would jump if given the opportunity, so for whatever (probably bad) reasons are out there he does not seem like a likely option if Harbaugh falls through. That makes no sense to me, nor big chunks of the coaching fraternity. It is what it is. I'm still hoping this apparent lack of interest is because there is no serious interest in anyone not named Harbaugh just yet.

20289788_BG3[1]

nope

THIS, HOWEVER, IS THE END OF BUTCH. Butch Jones gets extended to 2020 at $3.6 million a year(!). In two years at Tennessee he's 11-13 and his best win is likely over South Carolina this year. Recruiting's going in the right direction, but as Hoke demonstrated that's not always enough.

In any case, that's enough to knock Jones off the Plan B list.

Etc.: Oregon State contacts Hoke. Note that they have not contacted Schiano. In Oregon State's opinion we would be downgrading if we hired Greg Schiano. Baumgardner column.

C'mon white people, represent!

EDIT: In Oregon State's opinion we would be downgrading if we hired Greg Schiano. Can someone please tell the esteemed Mr. Hackett that we will murder all our teddy bears if Schiano is hired? I mean, my little menage does not want to endure the collateral damage of my wrath if that bad thing takes place.

Some good news and discouraging news... New guy here- spoke to a former Michigan AD today at the gym-I won't say which AD, but you can probably figure it out. Don't ask, I'm not gonna say who it is He is an acquaintance, have chatted with several times before, but I had the sense that there were definitely some boundaries in our discussion, which I tried not to cross. This is what I gleaned: 1) He knows Hackett well, and actually gave him his first job. He thinks very, very highly of him, and has spoken to him very recently (I had the impression this last weekend, but that is not definite). 2) He is confidant we are "going to get it right this time". Said that the previous situation wasn't right for a good hire (not so subtle dig at Brandon I assume...) 3) He said nobody in the media knows shit...all of it is idle speculation without any real basis in fact. 4) Now for the discouraging part-in regards to Harbaugh, it's still viable, but the wife issue is real. I am a bit sympathetic; I'm a native Californian that was formerly married to a New Englander, and it was very difficult to talk my now ex-wife into making a move from CA back to the Midwest for a career change. Once you get out of the 4-5 months of gray and cold, it's hard to go back. I believe Harbaugh's wife is originally from KS. 5). He thinks there are better candidates than Harbaugh out there. I'm not sure I'm there in regards to believing there are better candidates, but in our zeal for Harbaugh we are discounting his undeniable personality issues. I would love for Harbaugh to coach my alma mater, but I did meet him during his QB days, and he was in all honesty a bit of a tool back then. 6) I brought up Schiano and Addazio- he didn't respond, but his facial expression was along the lines of "fugetta bout dem". I have heard from somewhere else that most of the Schiano buzz is coming from his agent. 7). He said some very, very big names were in play. No other info:( 8). Finally, he said that they were PREPARED TO MAKE THIS COACH THE HIGHEST PAID COACH IN FOOTBALL, PRO OR COLLEGE, if the resume warranted it. That's it, I have no other details, but I was feeling pretty good in general, although the Harbaugh situation wasn't as good as I had hoped. His comments jives perfectly with what Brian said above, and also corroborated what Sam said about pulling Harbaugh out of CA. All I will say is this search seems to be so much better than the last one....

may be Plan B. And I can get behind Harbaugh, but also agree that there will be a lot of bruised feelings around town, quite a lot of buyer remorse on the part of the blogosphere, and in all probability, a lack of miracles on the football field. Good we will be, but in four or five years. . .

He turned San Diego around in one year, and got Stanford going within 2-3 years.  But they went 1-11 the year before he got there.  Michigan is starting from a MUCH better place.

I'm fully on board with the idea that there could be some buyer's remorse.  I was talking to a buddy yesterday who is a Stanford grad and he couldn't stress enough how much of a jerk he thinks Harbaugh is.  But after 4 years of Nice Guy Hoke who apologizes to his rival's coach immediately after getting destroyed by him, I'm kinda ready for a jerk.

I think that would be a matter of priorities...

i.e:  If your priority is a nice guy who loves his players, you want a clone of Brady Hoke.

OTOH, if your priority is a guy who will kick some ass and win games, you want Harbaugh.

Regarding the wife, buy her a Gulfstream 6 and she can be in San Fran in 3 hours.

but the whole wife thing was never a reason but an excuse. I think that by end of the week (or even in the next couple of days), we will all know if Harbaugh is serious or not. If he would like to take the job, this week is perfect, or he can watch his team get destroyed in Seattle next week, and go on to coach whichever NFL team next season.

if that is a legit issue then Harbaugh doesn't have a lot of options if he wants to coach next year and stay on the west coast.  The Seahawks and Cardinals probably aren't going to have job openings.  San Diego more then likely won't either.  In terms of the NFL that leaves the Niners and Raiders.  If the stories are true he won't be coaching the Niners next year,  I can't believe the Niners are going to trade Harbaugh to their rivals across the bay.  Maybe I'm wrong and they do, but if the wife issue is true, Harbaugh might not be coaching in the NFL next year.

When you look at the college landscape on the west coast with job openings, Oregon St is it (at least in terms of Power 5 conference teams on the west coast).

So if Harbaugh really wants to coach next year, be it in the NFL or college, and stay on the west coast, there aren't going to be many opportunities.  If the Niners fire him, I guess he could take a year off from coaching with pay and see what opens up next year.  However, if Harbaugh wants to be coaching next year, it's more likely not going to be on the west coast whether that is in college or the NFL.

Interesting.  I am from the midwest, moved to California and then went back to Michigan for grad. school.  Going back was extremely difficult for me and I moved back the second I graduated as I never had any intention of living anywhere other than California again.  (I still live in California and will never live anywhere else on account of the f*cking weather).

With all that said, I officially think the wife thing is overblown.  Moving to AA will not be the same thing for her as it is for other people who move to less desirable locations.  JH -- if he comes -- will get paid no less than $5 million a year.  She will have more than enough financial resources to go back to California whenver she wants.  (In fact, Ross or someone like him will probably offer up their private jets to her whenever she wants to take a trip).

In addition, they will still keep their place in the Northern California.  It's not like they are saying goodbye to California.  Both of them could still easily spend several months a year at their home in California and -- if she wanted to -- a bit more.

All in all, she can make this work and I bet she has come to terms with it.  She married Jim Harbaugh and if he really does want to coach here, he let her know this along time ago.  She really can't say no at this point.

Even I ended up liking Ann Arbor and I was just a regular student.  She will be fine.

... And it will likely be possible to barbecue outdoors in shirt sleeves on Christmas. To balance that, it might not break 90F all summer - even in a drought year. The climate is just very, very temperate. There's no real reason to check the weather 10 months out of the year, because it's always the same (and nice). You never have to make rain plans for events, and you can always be outside without precautions. Your car won't quit due to cold and the underbody won't rust out just after your warranty. I have played in a winter ultimate frisbee league which almost never gets rained out and gets to play on lighted fields ... in shorts, in January. Shall I go on?

I'm honestly not tying to challenge you, so please don't take this as that.

However, I have to suspect the former AD you spoke with is Bill Martin, and based on your conversation it seems like he is more plugged into this coaching search than the one in 2007 when he was ON A FUCKING SAILBOAT at the critical juncture with Les Miles. If memory serves, Mary Sue actually stepped in and was instrumental in bringing in Rich Rod.

Like I said, I'm not trying to challenge the veracity of your post, but I'm just frustrated that it seems like everyone seems to have their shit together EXCEPT when they are at UM. When Brady starts winning with a coherent spread offense at Oregon State, we'll know it's time to apologize to the gypsy.

1/ can't believe that Harbaugh could work for a guy like that without laughing every time they met --Prince Valiant from shemptown

2/ my sister-in-laws, pilates instructor lives close enought to Hackett, that he is able with a telescope to view into Hackett's conservatory/den & see what he is viewing on his laptop & his Favorite Place is MGoblog --just can't make out his user name just yet-- so he is monitoriing the situation here to get a pulse on those who count

the focus is lazer-like on Harbaugh because we can't imagine any other big names that would consider coming to Michigan.

If Hackett can pull a rabbit out of his hat and get someone else big-time to come here, then by all means, it doesn't HAVE to be Harbaugh.  I think most people just don't want a repeat of a Brady Hoke shot-in-the-dark type pick again.

If you know a guy who is close to a situation and you pump him for details and he tells you a couple things that sound reasonable, this is about the same as reading a report from NFL.com these days.

Yeah, Harbaugh is a flawed character. He has six kids and has his entire family except for his grown children, living near him in the Bay area. I have family  there and they love it and would never move unless an earthquake forced them from their  Marin County home which overlooks the ocean. So, yeah, I get this.

But Harbaugh, not his brother, has Michigan ties that go beyond just family. And in the end, it's his decision. That is why this is in part dragging out. Jim H. loves competition at the highest level, and he wants a SB legacy.

His makeup is that of a guy who believes in himself no matter what, and whatever he dedicdes is best. He is totally dedicated to purpose and plan and operates on the idea of winning to the exclusion of other concerns, like whether his personality is a distraction when others want something from him that he isn't willing to give.

He loves Michigan and would be willing to  come back to Ann Arbor under the right circumstances. But the nagging doubt is worry over whether he could accomplish everything he wants if he goes back to college coaching. In the end, how he resolves that or how his contract situation with the 49ers renders his future options, will decide how he chooses.

Michigan has cleared the path to his hire. So, it comes down to him making the move. I don't think he has decided yet, and unless he has a deadline, we'll probably still be waiting for Godot through Christmas and beyond.

It's interesting that Michigan is getting interest from other coaches but let's understand that a lot of this rhetoric is self-generated for career purposes and safe landing areas for choicdes and decisions still to be made after the bowl and NFL season. I think Michigan will get a great coach no matter what, because I think Hackett is doing all the right things to make it happen. From that standpoint, we are in good hands.

Most promising part of this was the OSU game watch party.  I said in that thread the only good thing about this blowout is Harbaugh has to be gritting his teeth so ddamn hard watching this.  Someone said he is probably not even watching, but instead watching NFL film.  But great to hear he was watching - because like for all of us, it sucked.  But unlike all of us he can do something about it!

Top 5 money is a far departure from the $8M floated.  It basically would be flat with what he makes now at SF with $5M.  That's great news too - as are the regents teaching Schlissel about cost-benefit analysis.

Just for the record, Meyer is not the highest paid coach in the B1G, it's Dantonio. So if Harbaugh comes to M, he goddamn better be the highest paid coach in the state - this is Michigan, ferchrissakes! Here is the 2014 total compensation ranking compiled by USAToday:

1) Saban
2) Dantonio
3) Stoops
4) Sumlin
5) Strong
6) Meyer

Steve Addazio is not Bald Brady Hoke. He's Healthy Jerry Kill. That doesn't mean Michigan should necessarily hire him, but he's got a better track record than Hoke did and his offense isn't "try to force college kids to make NFL throws and then complain about it when they don't" It's "run the option from the shotgun with lots of beef on the field until everything becomes a fine paste and you can play action to your one receiver."

They are prepared to offer Saban/Sean Payton type money to the right person, so we will not be outbid... This morning learned to the surprise of absolutely no one that the Borges to Nuss exchange was 100% a Brandon driven enterprise. Again, no surprise, but Brandon was an extremely toxic person in the leadership role. Brady definitely had to go, and has definite shortcomings as a coach, but don't be surprised if he does better than anticipated in his new job. Brandon was an anchor. Also learned how BS like the Butch Jones caper went down. They started out with a list- I think I heard there are 14 names on it now, but it conceivably could have been more early on. They were very circumspect, so the list was pretty generous. The search firm then approached those on the list, and simply asked them if they would even consider the job-just sending out feelers, nothing more. After all, why waste time on something that'll never happen-kinda like my dating life at one point:) In any event, the interest was never beyond that, but Butch and his agent parlayed that into a nice raise and contract extension. To say that we contacted him has a grain of truth, but to say we were interested in him is a pretty sizable exaggeration.
