Monday Recruitin' Readies Floodgates Comment Count

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

WE CAN RECRUIT AGAIN

Jim Harbaugh hasn't even been formally introduced and I'm panic-checking Twitter every few minutes to make sure I'm not late to start a Hello post. This is because recruits read the papers watch the local news have the internet too, and they're excited. Really excited. There's a darn good chance top-100 tight end Chris Clark ends up back in the fold in the near future:

At this point, he says the three schools he's interested in are UCLA, Michigan State and Michigan.

But Harbaugh could be a game changer for him.

"He'd 100 percent (excite me)," Clark said. "I still love Michigan, I've always liked the school.

Harbaugh's track record of utilizing and producing quality TEs certainly won't hurt here.

Five-star 2015 CB Iman Marshall, who's readying to play in the Under Armour AA Game, told 247's Tom Loy that Michigan could vault back into contention for him ($):

The “big pick up” for Michigan, as Marshall calls it, is regarding the potential hiring of Jim Harbaugh as the new head coach of the Wolverines.

“That would be great,” said Marshall. “The fact that Michigan would have a dude that came from the league with the [San Francisco] 49ers and someone who has coached a national championship contending team is big. That would be real dope.”

Marshall said he's visit Ann Arbor if Harbaugh was hired, per TomVH. USC is the heavy favorite to land Marshall, but just getting him on campus would be a huge step forward after his interest in the Wolverines had cooled significantly.

Another elite defensive back, four-star DC CB Marcus Lewis, told Rivals' Mike Farrell in a video interview that he'd consider Michigan again if Harbaugh was hired, and mentioned the possibility of an official visit. Lewis, who'd previously held the Wolverines in very high regard, currently has a top three of Kentucky, Washington State, and Miami, in that order—that seems like a top group a Harbaugh-led Michigan program could crack pretty easily.

Michigan could also jump back into the mix for four-star OLB Joshua McMillon, who told Rivals' Adam Gorney he'd consider taking an official should Harbaugh take over ($). McMillon's coach, however, said he expects McMillon to stick with his Alabama commitment either way.

Harbaugh won't be the only big recruiting pull, in all likelihood. Florida defensive coordinator and current interim head coach DJ Durkin, the 2012 Rivals Recruiter of the Year, should also attract serious talent if he takes the DC job at Michigan, as expected. Top-50 2015 OLB Roquan Smith told TomVH he'd take an official to Michigan should Durkin join Harbaugh's staff.

[Hit THE JUMP for the rest of the roundup. Yes, you'll actually want to read it this time.]

Back To Earth For A Moment

While Michigan will make some late moves for top 2015 prospects, the timing of the hire—with just over a month until Signing Day and many high-level recruits enrolling as early as this week—might make it difficult for Harbaugh to pull together a truly elite 2015 class.

The MLive article on Clark mentioned that five-star CA QB and UCLA commit Josh Rosen won't consider Michigan. Five-star KY RB Damien Harris will announce his decision between Alabama, Kentucky, and Ohio State on January 9th, and he told TomVH that even with Harbaugh, Michigan won't be under consideration again.

While I've heard that four-star Cass Tech RB Mike Weber would be open to flipping back to Michigan from his recent Ohio State commitment, his quotes to 247's Steve Wiltfong suggest otherwise ($):

“I’ve been hearing it a lot,” Weber said of Harbaugh to Michigan. “Really, I think I’m good at Ohio State. I don’t think I would switch back.

“Most likely, I would listen to them and stuff like that, but I think I’m pretty solid.”

He even added that he's "tired of hearing" about Michigan and Harbaugh; perhaps that'll chance now that it's a reality instead of conjecture.

But SOON

The 2016 class is where the Harbaugh hire will have its biggest impact. Michigan may not have to worry too much about the 2015 running back situation; their depth is pretty solid there for next year, and they could have an elite prospect from the junior ranks soon. Four-star GA RB Elijah Holyfield tweeted he's "gotta go back up to Michigan" if they got Harbaugh. One-upping him is four-star IL RB Kentrail Moran, who told 247's Steve Lorenz he'd "probably commit to be honest" if Harbaugh took over ($).

Four-star in-state OL Thiyo Lukusa tweeted that Harbaugh to Michigan is a "game-changer." Lukusa had once been close to a Michigan commitment, but backed off that level of interest in a major way as last season played out.

Four-star FL DE Jordan Woods gave Lorenz one of the better quotes of the week ($):

"I'm really excited about it," Woods said. "I have had a dream of playing in the Big House for a while. Now that Jim Harbaugh is there, all I have to say is that the Big Ten needs to watch out. The Harbaugh era is in effect. I have followed what he did in San Francisco and how he brought them back to prominence so quickly. It's impressive what he did in the NFL."

Florida State and Florida will be tough competition for Woods, promising though that quote may be.

While I'm talkin' bout the Noles, four-star FSU DE commit Janarius Robinson told Lorenz he'd "reconsider Michigan for sure" if Harbaugh reached out to him ($).

Four-star GA WR Josh Imatorbhebhe told Lorenz that Harbaugh and Michigan are "a match made in heaven," and the hiring helps M quite a bit in his eyes ($).

Four-star MD OL Terrance Davis might put Michigan out in front once the hire is official, per The Wolverine's Brandon Brown ($):

"I'm definitely pumped about Harbaugh maybe being at Michigan," he said. "Just the way that he turns programs around and makes them competitive in a very short time. Also his NFL connections obviously too. Michigan will definitely be up there even higher for me if he's hired."

Davis even went as far as saying that Michigan could be his leader and his future home if Harbaugh were to accept the job.

Four-star CA WR Cordell Broadus, son of Snoop Dogg, told TomVH he'd definitely visit Michigan if the Harbaugh hire occurred. A Lochdogg for Snoop Dogg swap is one I'll happily accept.

The recruit reactions are still flooding in—I'm sure I missed a few just while compiling this post—but needless to say, the 2016 class could be special.

Reading recruiting news had become so depressing I just started ignoring it.  Now, we get to be excited about tomorrow's press conference, followed shortly by excitement about the coaching hires, and then (I believe) some late season "gets" on the recruiting trail.  I always refused to sell out to the notion we would get Harbaugh because I didn't want to be further disappointed.  It is great to be an optimist again.

My guess (and really hope at this point) is that Weber stays with Ohio State.  I understand the sentiment that guys like Kalis and Marshall were committed to Ohio State and then came over but Weber was committed to Michigan and then flipped.   Let him stay flipped.  He can join Brionte Dunn on special teams.

If/when Weber & Harris pass, I strongly prefer that Michigan focus on other positions rather than reaching for a non-elite RB.  There are a lot of needs looking 2-3 years out and not a lot of scholarships in the '15 class.

Considering we have Green, Smith, and Isaac, I would concur. It's nice to have and something you always want because they're great athletes (see: Peppers, Woodson, etc), but there are plenty of positions I'd like to see them address, namely at WR (Cole will be a player) and DE. We need some playmakers.

RB is usually a high turnover position.  If someone decides to transfer plus say, Drake Johnson does not make a full recovery from his knee surgery, we might be up the creek without a guy in the 2015 class.  However I agree, we need to get a really good player and not just fill the spot with someone who will never see the field.

We'd still have 3 other RBs, not including Norfleet or any of the three FBs that could be useful role-players.  We are more than fine at RB for 2015.

A savvy '16 RB will see the recruiting gap as a golden opportunity.

And the first update - Brian Cole confirmed with Mike Farrell that he is solid and will enroll early next week!

Having been out of the recruiting loop for a while - any other early enrollees?

I'm not worried about recruiting...the recruits will flock to Harbaugh at Michigan.

I'm excited about what Harbaugh is going to do with the talent already here that's been wasting away all this time, once they're coached up and instilled with fight.

You hit it on the head blusage! There is talent all over this current roster. The main objective for Jim as it's one of his areas of expertise will be to start developing and molding a couple QB's. That and get someone in there to coach these O linemen up. The backs, TE's and WR's will be just fine! The D will be fine as well.

for 2015, Michigan fans will need to keep expectations under control despite the awesome JH hire.  A lot of top players already have relationships built with other coaching staffs that go back many months.  Michigan's best bet will be to first target the decommitted players and see how many we can get back (Clark, Roseboro, Weber, Kirkland, and maybe even Taylor).  Harris sounds very unlikely to say the least.  Then, make a strong run at guys like Marshall who have expressed previous interest in Michigan.  After that, we see what shakes out with as of yet unknown prospects.

About adding Snoop's kid. He takes a hit, well there is that risk if caught, and if he is hit then a pound of concentrated cannabinoids will be dispersed instantly into the surrounding air and that's just the stuff he was born with. His herbal essence could affect game play and judgment calls by the refs. Those on the field might just lay back on the carpet, giggle at the pretty colors in the stands, and task somebody with ordering 1000 bags of Doritos from the concessions on credit. This may not play out well on national broadcast.

Haven't seen many people bring up Ty Wheatley Jr.

Ace, happy to see this column back to the happy side! I'd assume you think getting JH increases our chances exponentially and if his dad joins the staff, he's a lock?  Would he be recruited as a DE if Clark comes back into the fold?

just can't do that.  Sure QB is a question mark. But dang, the overall talent relative to most of the teams on the schedule is there and sufficient to win. And we have a coach now that is a proven talent multiplier.  Will they be a 10 /11 win team, maybe not.  But dang, a lot of people had M winning 10+ last year.

Also of note is the fact that this team has to be rabid hungry after last year's death march.  I am going to assume a state of irrational exhuberance until the empirical data tells me otherwise!
