Indiana 80, Michigan 67
This was nearly the entire recap. [Bryan Fuller/MGoBlog]
I can't fully capture the noise this fan made. A guttural wail, as if Chewbacca had been stabbed in the heart, or a baby elephant had suffered a collapsed lung. It was the sound of a soul forcefully leaving a man's body.
Michigan had a 10:29 scoreless drought in this game, Indiana went on a 28-0 run, and that noise emanated from the seats behind press row. Let's try this sports thing again tomorrow.

Don't think you can pin that all on the big men. Our guards were matadors on the perimeter and rotations were nonexistent.

The big men had nothing to do with it at all. Our guards got [ed-Ace: dominated, destroyed, anything but the term chosen by the OP, please]. If IU went inside to Bryant more that 28-0 run would have been 55-0. Everyone got outplayed, everyone, including Beilein himself.

Terrible job by Beilein getting these kids ready. Maybe he should someday learn what defense is and use it. I'm sick of his teams sucking at D and just hoping their shooting can make up for it. At this point we're in a day and age of bball where teams who don't and can't play D don't win champhionships or games.

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure playing good defense has always been necessary to win championships in basketball.
February 2nd, 2016 at 11:32 PM ^
I think a reasonable argument is if you literally aren't making ANY shots (as Michigan wasn't tonight), it allows a near-elite transition team to score a shit ton of transition points. For a team that shoots as well as Michigan typically does, this game had some uncommon occurances.

How does Crean have our number? He doesn't seem like that good of a coach against other teams, but somehow his team always brings its A+ game against us.
Caris LeVert, please return ASAP.

totally agree.

has Michigan's number in general. Michigan is something like 23-58...make that 23-59 against IU in my lifetime.

to win when you give up 50% shooting and go literally a quarter of the game without scoring. The 50% includes going only 10-30 from 3.

I NEVER post overly negative comments about coaches or team direction in the forums. Posters lose their shit all around me and the most I do is close MGoBlog for awhile and await new threads.....
... but this game is a little different. I have loved Beilein, but the way our defense played was a turning point for me. If he were fired tomorrow, I'd be fine with it. Not saying I want it or that it should happen any time at all. But I'm a little emoji-shrug about the whole matter now. We need a team that can fight and get at it with defense. This game felt historically bad and I just couldn't ignore what I was seeing.
February 2nd, 2016 at 11:37 PM ^
Yea. We went through a good stretch against some bad teams and Maryland did drugs before the game...but there were and are issues with this squad and it sucks to watch when they play a quality team. The lack of ANY defense is frustrating and the lack of big man and skilled athletes to attack the hoop kill us. Caris wouldn't have saved us. He would have been throwing up bad three-pointers as well (MAYBE he'd have made an extra one or two).
I also don't want Beilein fired but man this is getting old. Someone behind the scenes go pay some goddamn ball players to come here.

Two things:
- I'd take that shitty loss in a heartbeat in exchange for any sort of victory over MSU
- I hope that happens
- I don't see how we'll beat MSU
- I'm not good at math

Say what you want about Beilein, but if you don't think he's gonna light into the team and have them pissed and ready to fight on Saturday you're selling him severely short. The team will have a short memory and will be ready to go.

It's ridiiculous to read all the comments from basketball illiterates on the game thread talking about how Beilein and this team suck.
That's the way the ball bounces sometimes. Sometimes, you're out of sync and the other team is in sync.
It wasn't really even one game, just a 10 minute stretch with a 28-0 run leading to a 13 point loss. Michigan even missed 5 straight free throws (including the front end of a one and one) and Indiana kept hitting ridiculous threes, including one by Bielfeldt. That is unusual.
Even Kentucky went through a similar drought tonight blowing a 21 point lead to a crappy Tennessee team and losing by 7.
Michigan probably isn't a top 20 team this year without their top lottery pick player. But he should be back. They will play a lot better. They should make they tourney.

Obviously you haven't been paying attention. This team was 7-2 in the BIg Ten with a win over one of the top teams in the country.... without their top player, a possible lottery pick.
And Beilein's record speaks for itself.
Using your logic, we should have fired Beilein when the team had some bad losses just before they made their run to the National Championship and then the Elite Eight (again without perhaps their top player).
Sheesh, maybe many bandwagon fans here should just stick to football.

about criticizing other Michigan fans and their opinions that conflict with yours.
Beliein has to be one of the best (if not the best) developmental coaches in the country. I have defended him on these boards and with friends.
But at this point I am pretty neutral on him as well. Beilein's record does speak for itself - and there is a pretty fair amount of bad along with a lot of good. He deserves criticism for this game. No matter what else happens, he will always be the one who brought UMBB back to relevancy.

One thing that drives me absolutely nuts about this team is the lack of movement on offense. All basketball these days has too much standing and not enough movement, in my opinion. But Michigan seems worse than most, if not all, to me. Meanwhile, the other team has guys cutting and hitting layups. It's painful to watch sometimes. I understand I coached (high school) and played (high school) long ago and the game has evolved (like travelling on every possession being okay now). But, man, it drives me nuts.
As for the complaints about Beilein's recruiting, folks need to remember that basketball recruiting is horrible, dirty business. If we assume Beilein is clean (which I do and I admire him for), then he has done remarkably well, considering much of his competition.
As for the lack of defense...ugh!

Walton Jr was Terrible, Robinson was Terrible. Irvin was terrible. Abdur-Rahkman was Terrible. Donnal was terrible. Dawkins was terrible. we basically only played six players.

Michigan may get torched again Saturday. Going only 7 deep (per Beilein) without Levert is catching up to them.
February 3rd, 2016 at 1:22 AM ^
But UM did a good job of getting some good looks early in the run where there were a couple of non-calls that led to a couple of run outs. One on Walton where Beilfelt killed him, and one on MAAR whee he got hacked. Add in the 1-1 call on a shooting foul, and IU opened the lead from 8 to 15 and rout was on. The team lost their composure from there.
So give Walton and MAAR credit for going to the hoop and doing it the right way early in that run. If they get the calls, we are looking at a 6-10 point halftime deficit (or less) and we have a completely different game.

I agree that we lack overall athleticism with this team. It's one thing when you're an offensive perimeter oriented team yet have good athletes, but when you lack the athletes and can't score in a variety of ways and do not place enough onus on D and play a quality opponent that has good athletes, it is a recipe for failure. I can't however bash on JB too much given the amount of early exits this program has endured. The staff just needs to identify better athletes at certain positions. Example kam Chatman- I cannot fathom or wrap my head around what they were seeing in him that they thought he would be a good fit for this level. Maybe he pans out but I'm not seeing it. It's taken Donnal 3+ years to even be adequate. I believe this team will be ok but I will agree that JB and the staff need to attack how they recruit a tad bit differently. I'm not saying changing anything drastically but we have to get better athletes year in year out. Bottom line. Find a way. Defense was awful. I think Beilein will continue to work on this team and they will get better. Getting into the tournament would be a big accomplishment. Defense, and when we play quality teams I think we really need to slow the game down as much as possible. hard to do when the outside shots aren't falling and you have seemingly no other component to go to on offense. No PF's or C's who can make something happen when shots aren't falling. This game felt like SMU round two.

Please! The rules for football and basketball are different. You do not get three timeouts per half; you get four timeouts for the game, of which up to three carry over to the second half. (Last year it was five, with up to four carrying over).
Michigan used its full allotment of timeouts in this game, two in the first half and two in the second. Beilein called the two first-half timeouts during the 25-0 run, to try to break momentum and draw up a play for his team. It didn't work. And between this thread (2) and the game open thread, I bet I've seen 10 people complain about Beilein's use of timeouts.
There were many problems with this game. Timeout usage was not one of them. In no particular order, they include bad offense, bad defense, hot shooting by Indiana (admittedly, on some very good looks), cold shooting by Michigan (free throws are never contested), the fact that nobody knows what a foul is anymore, fatigue, injuries to LeVert and Albrecht, and probably ten more things.
If you want to fault the coaches, talk about game preparation -- Michigan looked flustered by the intensity of Indiana's man defense, and they looked confused by Indiana's offense, especialyl in transition. But it's silly to call out Beilein for his in-game coaching during a blowout. Michigan did not lose this game due to timeout management.

National Championship game. I thought Michigan would win that one back when I was 13. They seem to play well against us. If our shooting is cold we lose to the half the teams in the B1G. If the team shoots well they can beat even the elite B1G teams. Hopefully the team shoots the lights out against MSU!
