TomVH: Roderick Ryles Update
Roderick Ryles (6'1", 185 lbs.) is a 2011 safety from Dr. Phillips in Orlando. He's currently committed to Arkansas, but has started to hear more and more from Michigan.
I spoke with Coach Smith a little while ago, but Coach Rod is supposed to call me later tonight. Coach Smith was just saying that they have some more scholarships available and that they were going to stay in contact with me.
I asked if Michigan were to offer him would he consider the Wolverines, since he's committed to Arkansas. He said yes. If you haven't figured out by now, this is a teammate of Demetrius Hart and 2012 QB Nick Patti.
Something to keep an eye on.

But he's only a 2-star...
September 28th, 2010 at 6:22 PM ^
Well, he's #46 safety, per ESPN, and #30 safety, per Rivals, so that's a solid 3 star. If he can help us lock up Dee Hart, and if the kid has serious football skills, then lock him up. I think this class can take 23 kids, so plenty of schollies to go around.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:41 PM ^
so you're that guy, huh?
September 28th, 2010 at 6:52 PM ^
I'm NOT trying to start the "OMG STARS R EEVRYTHING v. Pat White was a 2 star" debate... but with Omameh as a quality starter as a sophomore, Vinopal on a the 2-deep, and Carvin Johnson waiting to destroy some people once his knee heals... hasn't this staff earned at least a little bit of the benefit of the doubt on lower rated guys?
September 28th, 2010 at 6:58 PM ^
I think that is because apart from them, there is a giant black hole in those spots you listed. Let's wait till this secondary is any good before praising the coaches for their diamonds in the rough spotting.
September 28th, 2010 at 7:48 PM ^
these guys are perhaps more a reflection of lack of depth, but Omameh is legit. This isn't some late in the game offer. We're months from February and the staff is showing interest. I suspect they think Ryles is a player.
September 28th, 2010 at 8:09 PM ^
To be fair to Carvin (I don't remember much about Ray's recruitment), he wasn't a late off either. I won't say he's panning out like Omameh has, but he's showing plenty of promise.
September 29th, 2010 at 7:27 AM ^
to imply that Carvin was late offer. I was trying to defend Blue in SB a bit because I think he's right that the staff has earned the right not to get questioned on offers (at least in terms of spotting talent ... the Dorsey, Kinnard, Witty qualifying type of thing is another story). Still, we've only seen Ray and Carvin on a handful of plays this year and they're playing at spots where we don't have much depth. We'll know more by season's end and spring ball, but I do agree they look promising.
September 30th, 2010 at 3:34 PM ^
Carvin was injured in the first game and is a true freshman and Omameh is a RS sophmore not sure you can compare the two. Given how well Thomas Gordon has been playing and the fact that Carvin was in front of him on the depth chart should speak volumes.
September 28th, 2010 at 8:21 PM ^
But Carvin won a starting spot after being on campus for like 20 minutes over some higher rated guys with more experience.
September 28th, 2010 at 9:32 PM ^
I don't get the reference above comparing him to Omameh. Omameh has had time to develop, Carvin just got here really.

Yeah! I'll Wait! [Gets out tent and 10-year supply of wheat.]
September 28th, 2010 at 8:21 PM ^
rather than a quality starter? Seems more correct
September 29th, 2010 at 8:46 AM ^
Yeah especially since he blocked one guy (Teo) into another guy (safety I believe?) on DRob's 87 yard TD run against ND.
September 28th, 2010 at 7:01 PM ^
Am I the only one who immediately saw this as sarcasm? (Not sure whether it is or not, but that is how I saw it)
September 28th, 2010 at 7:31 PM ^
People do not have a sarcasm meter.
September 28th, 2010 at 8:12 PM ^
Flew over my head to be sure
September 28th, 2010 at 11:06 PM ^
I almost didn't catch it but I would hope that its safe to assume sarcasm on a comment like this when someone has a decent number of mgopoints.

posters like to relive the same arguments time and time again

Le'veon Bell is supposed to be the star RB at MSU and he was a 2star according to Scout. Fans are more impressed with him than Baker or Caper.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:07 PM ^
I like the developements going on here. Cass Tech in Michigan and Dr. Phillips in Florida. Dee is looking more and more blue by the minute. Also if I am not mistaken I think I spotted some dreads hanging out of the back of his helmet.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:08 PM ^
Glad to see our national image on the rebound. People in my state (Florida) are starting to take notice. I suppose the next natural question would be wether or not he has dreads?
Edit: Yes, in his rivals pic he has some incredible dreadlocks. Wow...

MOAR SECONDARY PLZ
September 28th, 2010 at 6:18 PM ^
The worlds most dreaded offense is now getting it's counterpart - a dreaded defense.
September 28th, 2010 at 7:24 PM ^
I think this defense is dreadful enough, don't you think?
September 28th, 2010 at 7:28 PM ^
I just spit pop all over my lap-top, thank you very much.
September 29th, 2010 at 7:38 AM ^
Did a double WTF and then realized I am retarded.
I'm really tired.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:07 PM ^
if he's part of a package deal. I would need to see more of him to know if he rates better than a 2 star.
TomVH - any input into this?
Thanks.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:10 PM ^
But it looks like he's been showing out pretty well this season. A little lean, but lays the wood with good ball skills. Part of that might be having half the field shut down by HCD. I know--generic praise, but I'm thinking a jump in the rankings at some point.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:43 AM ^
lays the wood with good ball skills.
Wait, what are we talking about here?
September 29th, 2010 at 3:49 PM ^
Mike Cox?
September 29th, 2010 at 8:38 AM ^
If he can hit and tackle, doesn't take bad angles, and doesn't lose foot races with TE's, I could care less how many stars he has. I never played football but it seems to me that its more easier to play aggressive and not worry about making a mistake when you have faith that the guy behind you has your back and is gonna clean up anything that gets by you FWIW...
Oh BTW I read the statement as sarcasm above as well but I just wanted to throw this out there.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:13 PM ^
I remember last time we got a player from Florida in a package deal with a two-star recruit...it has worked out pretty well.
September 28th, 2010 at 9:50 PM ^
what is his GPA? 2.9 last reported
what is his work ethic like? After Barwis, it will not matter.
those are two things you need to know. The rest is just hype. The kid is talented, beyond his star rating.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:10 PM ^
The star system does not matter. A lot of times a kid is rated lowly is because he has not attended any national camps or combines. From the film the kid is a solid recruit with good speed. We need all the DB's we can get.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:13 PM ^
How many stars did LaDavion Bell @ MSU have? Throw stars out the window, cause Bell as much as I hate to say it is a stud and he was ranked poorly
September 28th, 2010 at 7:19 PM ^
Yes, there are exceptions to the rule, but star rankings have shown to be correlated to success. One guy at MSU is no reason to disregard the entire system
September 28th, 2010 at 6:14 PM ^
If this interest continues following next week.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:17 PM ^
Well played.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:23 PM ^
Uh -oh, maybe I am way too negative but this statement states he has interest right now. So if Dee is blue, he should still be interested, maybe more. However, if Dee goes SEC, will Ryles not bother with us.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:25 PM ^
You're reading too much into it. I just thought it was funny, that's all.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:28 PM ^
Ok, thanks Tom. Isn't it great to have so many people hang on your every word. Next we will wait to see about your punctuation marks.
September 28th, 2010 at 6:54 PM ^
marks sounds a lot like marx as in Karl Marx.
Are you saying that Tom or Roderick Ryles are communists and we should be ready for the revolution? Ryles is currently committed to Arkansas and they wear red.
