Odd guy? Have you conversed over coffee? How can you blame him for the departures? We have log jams of guys competing for starting jobs -- and they're all young. The guys who are leaving are getting beat out by younger guys (Turner (Everyone), Vlad (Gordon), Lalota (Black)). If I'm a recruit, I want to play for a guy who has coached in the NFL and has had success and want to know the position he wants me to play and play it. I won't want to sign my LOI not knowing who my next coach will be. I'm not saying Robinson is a defensive genius but I am saying it sure as hell isn't his fault.

GERG has two Super Bowl rings, two more than anyone else on the staff. He didn't get those because he was an idiot. I'll stick with him for the forseeable future.
September 28th, 2010 at 8:48 PM ^
Charlie Weis has super bowl rings, too.
I'm not sure that his defense ever really translated well to college. Texas was good in '05 in spite of their defense. Syracuse was a disaster.

I am not necessarily defending the quality of the thread but he did not suggest that GERG would not be here. He was just simply asking who the mgoblog community might like to see as Michigan's coordinator if we did not (for whatever reason) have GERG and his lovely locks.

Bill Sheridan?

Ron English.. I hear he is a hell of a coach
His squad held OSU to 73 points on Saturday.

I'm sure we could get Tony Dungy.

No question. Maybe if Ralph were 10 years younger...

agree - if anyone should know that it is not good for older wrinkly gentlemen to wear older wrinkly leather coats, it would be ralph lauren. that is why GERG sticks with nice soft cotton.

think before you post.
September 27th, 2010 at 2:03 PM ^
I mean it. Seriously? We're 4-0,looking better and deeper than last year everywhere except the kicking game (see kicking, not returnng), we haven't had one B10 game yet and you're looking for ideas to fill vacanies that don't even exist?!?
Unless GERG talks of retirement or we have 11 excellent seniors playing together and still giving up 350+ yards per game to UMASS or MAC teams I don't want to hear it.
Hypothetical coaching changes are fine for 'do you think Jim Harbaugh might go to the NFL like his brother next year?' But let's leave the Michigan coaching staff out of the conversation.
September 27th, 2010 at 2:08 PM ^
I thought it was common knowledge that the defense Robinson is running right now is out of necessity and not what he actually wants to run. They have made the decision that they will play soft zone coverage to protect our extremely inexperienced secondary. Yes, of course I can't stand watching a 3 man rush all game, but I honestly think there's nothing we can do until the secondary is better, and older. Instead of a new DC, I'll take the defense Robinson ran at Texas.
September 27th, 2010 at 2:19 PM ^
If in 1-2 years we're still running this weak rush and corners 15 yards off the WRs, then I'll swing by Ann Arbor Torch and Pitchfork, but GERG gets a free pass for this year. He has a whole stable of freshman DBs and as long as they improve I'm happy.
This year it's all about "Less than 35 points game allowed." Dilithium can put 35 on the boards against the defenses we'll face, so hold them to less than that and we win. The Lloyd Carr era Defense of QB Death can hopefully rear its head again as our defense gets more playing time.
As for my dream: Lloyd Carr in his prime or the late Jim Johnson

Yeah he and Ron English can go grab a burger at Sidetracks in Ypsi and talk about the time they got their worlds rocked by FCS teams. Pass.
I know Bud Foster has an impressive body of work and all, but I like to be able to check the "Never Lost to a FCS Team when Ranked" box on the hiring form.

September 27th, 2010 at 2:48 PM ^
Yeah but they also didn't step up and take the game on their shoulders. An elite FBS Defense (like Bud Foster is supposed to create) should be capable of forcing some turnovers, grabbing a pick and helping the offense out.
Maybe it's a mindset thing, but I was coached that if the offense is having an off day the D steps up and sets the tone. Kind of like how the D did in the Brady Quinn for Heisman Bowl.

Some folks just arent capabe of sitting back and enjoying things while letting the season play out.
I feel so sad for those people, a handful of them are in this thread.

I was thinking about it yesterday, and was thinking to myself that maybe the move to the 3-3-5 stack (it is NOT a stack)(yes it is)(No it is NOT...), which GERG has little experience with, is a precursor to a move at DC to Jeff Casteel, who is DC and LB position coach? Maybe he has figured out Bill Stewart is not a good football coach, and is looking to move? Not suggesting this should or shouldn't happen, the thought just crossed my head yesterday.
September 28th, 2010 at 8:50 PM ^
I think if Casteel moves on, it will be to a head coaching position somewhere.

I nominate Denard Robinson, did you see the way he was diagnosing those rollouts in the UMass game

What if we were to replace the OP of this thread? Then we wouldn't have to waste time listening to people complain about only being 4-0. We should easily be 5-0 by now but GERG sucks.....
September 27th, 2010 at 3:17 PM ^
We could use an office linebacker!
September 27th, 2010 at 3:42 PM ^
Whoever we get has to be legit at recruiting!! While coaching is a part of winning you have to have talent and depth, which we severely lack. Just pray that Mike Martin doesn't go pro!
I'd take anyone from Penn State or even, sigh, OSU. Their defensive units are always strong. Give me some of that w/ our offense and we're unbeatable in 2011.

GERG most likely loves scrotum at recruiting because he is old enough to have given Charlie Chaplin a hand job, but he is all we have and I love him. His hair speaks for itself. I know, it bought me a fine bourbon last Saturday night.
September 27th, 2010 at 6:19 PM ^
What did GERG do to draw such scorn from some of you? Seriously...

GERG wigs.I want to see peeps wearing them.
Student section, I'm looking at you.

I understand the OP may have been asking a hypothetical question about what if, and not trying to incite an e-riot. However, right now, lets focus on what we have, why we have it, and enjoy being 4-0 (hopefully 5-0 soon). The folks stating why this isn't all on our DC, that we basically are playing all freshmen in our secondary, and even our upperclassmen are mostly playing like freshmen. Could he do better? I don't know, could you? Granted he's being paid to do better, but give him a chance to do it. Can you imagine if we hadn't given RR a chance to build this offense? I we had fired him last year? Or after his first year as many rabid "fans" were screaming for. Maybe we won't have a great season this year, and maybe that will be our defenses fault. But if we have an offense scoring 40+ PPG will you be screaming for RR's head? If so, I think you're an idiot. Now, if our defense gets worse next year, perhaps then we should have this discussion.
September 29th, 2010 at 12:18 AM ^
I think Robinson is the right guy for the defense but I really believe the type of defense we run is what raises questions for me. Running a 3-3-5 stack defense in the Big 10 just doesn't make sense to me when you have teams like Iowa, Penn State, and Wisconsin looking to run it down your throat. The 3-3-5 worked well in the Big East for Rich Rod in the Big East because he didn't have Big 10 offensive lines and runningbacks to defend. I really think a 4-3 defense with Martin, Campbell (Former prized 5 star), RVB, and either Roh or Banks depending on how they want to use their players would be so much better for them in the future against these Big 10 teams. Now I know the DT spot is thin right now for a 4-3 defense but a difference in recruiting could help that. Just an idea thrown out there. Either way, Go Blue.
