Let's not trash one ex-coach, but let's make sure to trash another!
You really think Lloyd "purposely sabotaged the program?"

It's fair to say that Lloyd and Rich didn't have a great relationship, and that didn't help matters - they are two guys with strong opinions about how to run a program and butted heads a lot. But the idea that Carr (as our assistant athletic director, no less) wanted to sabotage his own former program and see it collapse is pretty crazy.

Did Lloyd tell Rich to switch to a 3-3-5 in the middle of the 2008 season and then hire GERG? Did he make Rich recruit a bunch of guys with sketchy academics who didn't make it to campus?
As I said, the two could have had a better relationship. But Rich made a lot of poor choices on his own.

his offensive coaches couldn't coach them up; namely borges. the misuse of denard and gardner was criminal.

Coach Hoke.
Funny how so called knowledgible M fans forget Hoke was D line coach for the 1997 M championship team. That was a pretty good line. I hope hoke one day comes back in ten years to take over the D line from Coach Matty.

He gets to coach for two weeks, and there's no buyout. Other than that...

One of the more frustrating things to come to terms with in life is the realization that there are people who seem to have a knack for consistently failing upward.

He was defensive line coach and associate head coach. Their DC is Bob Shoop.

as to Ws and Ls. His stint at UM allowed him to rise above the .500 level. He's a good position coach, I believe, and there is no doubt about his recruiting prowess.
He is, however, a nice man and former UM coach. I wish him well and above all happiness. He'll never be a great coach, but he'll be a wealthy man.

this board has become the biggest collection of fucking assholes.
If I wanted to read a bunch of moronic comments from sniveling cry babies, I'd goto an SEC page.

I️ see a lot of people mad at people for bashing Brady Hoke but I️ don’t see anyone actually bashing him. It’s fun to joke about cause he’s kind of a funny guy and we’re in a much better place now.

I don't think he was qualified to be Michigan's head coach but Brian and Ace shit on the guy to no end and I don't get it. Rich Rod had more of a track record but 10 years later that track record seems to suggest that Rich Rod is just as incompetent with defense as Hoke is on offense. And even then, Harbaugh's time so far makes it pretty clear that establishing a dominant pro-style offense is not quite as easy as anyone here initially thought.
The fact that Hoke has not gotten a job since is pretty damning but I still really don't think he would do too bad. Then again, being a coordinator at Oregon or Tennessee is probably more luctrative than HC at Ball State.
November 14th, 2017 at 12:23 PM ^
Yes, Rich Rodriguez still doesn't put a lot of emphasis on defense in his programs, like about half the Head Coaches in the Pac 12 and Big 12 for that matter.
Bottom line is that 10 years later, Rich Rodriguez is still a Head Coach in a P5 conference and Brady Hoke is a position coach, current interim position excluded. Rodriguez > Hoke.
It's amazing to see the factions still alive and well within the U of M fanbase. Makes me shudder to think what could happen if and when Harbaugh decides to move on.

People will make fun of caricatures. It was pretty bad when he was our coach and *everyone* else was mocking him and us for having him. I don't wish him any personal ill, but I'm gonna be honest enough and say I'm glad he's not our problem anymore.
I know that some people want to settle on the 'he's a good guy' narrative and all that, but he did a few things as HC of Michigan that made me question his professional ethics.
Now the Shane Morris situation - obviously David Brandon had a role in that - but yeah Hoke showed lack of leadership and lack of strength of character in that situation, too. Beyond that, I remember very well how this was a dude who talked about accountability a lot - in almost ever interview and presser- but was king of excuses when it was actually time to account for his work.
I don't think that was a result of deceit or bad intentions, I think it was the result of a dude who was in over his head and clung to anything he could find to preserve the notion that he knew what he was doing. But that was kind of the thing with Hoke. He was a dude who didn't know his limitations and a result exposed his weaknesses in brutal ways.
If he knows what's good for his reputation, he finishes these 2 games and then looks for another DL coach gig somewhere a long way from Michigan.

Wish him the best. He was a Michigan man and a Michigan national champion. Unfortunately, a head coaching job here was just WAY over his head. Sure, that was frustating (very), but he had good intentions. I'll crack jokes about his clapping, lack of headsets, golf-shirt-in-a-monsoon, and coachspeak, but I still respect him and think he is a great person.
While I was deeply upset by the results of his tenure here, I didn't lose my respect for him like I did with the idiot he replaced, and the astronomically bigger idiot that served as AD at the time.
