OT Favorite Music
The Lolapalooza thread from a couple of days ago introduced me to a great band, The Gaslight Anthem. I am just curious as to what some of the other MGoBlogger's favorite bands are. I'm doing this for totally selfish reasons, I have a hard time finding new bands that I like.
Some of my favorites are The Weakerthans, Rilo Kiley, The Mountain Goats, The Bouncing Souls etc.
Help me find some new great band and thanks for your help.

WHAM! *shoves throttle into AB-2*
Ditch that "indie" trash and start listening to jazz.
You're welcome.
But does anyone else find it ironic that in the 1920s, people were probably saying "Ditch that "jazz" trash and start listening to ragtime."?
Okay, that's not bad...but, believe me, no one is going to be listening to the Weakerthans in 90 years. That "indie" trash is ephemeral.
If you've ever listened to jazz...and I mean really listened to jazz...you'd never need to create another thread on a sports blog looking for more middle class suburban white kid bands to listen to.
I thought I was doing the OP a favor.
(EDIT: It was stupid on my part to say anything about race. Sorry if I offended anyone. I don't apologize for anything else though.)
You can't expect a good reception to such statements around here. Jazz is music for musicians. All this newbie stuff is designed for mass appeal and mass consumption. Plastic bubble gum in a glitzy wrapper. Use it up, get bored, buy more albums.
You know...it is possible to listen to more than one genre.
You come off as the "Down in Front"-type.
isn't really a genre. It has some generally idiosyncratic characteristics (like the frequent use of the octatonic scale), but it's more like an open system or a sponge, that absorbs genres and recreates them.
is good advice.
I listen to a lot. I like classic rock (led zeppelin, def leppard, lynyrd skynyrd, ac/dc all that stuff); hard rock (metallica, disturbed, shinedown, pantera, etc.); country (Jason aldean, trace adkins, Tim mcgraw, Toby Kieth) and some rap (mostly eminem)
Did you really just include Shinedown in a group with Metallica, Disturbed and Pantera? They need to be in a group with Nickelback, Theory of a Dead Man, Daughtry, and Shit. They aren't metal or hard rock. That would be like saying Skee-lo is a hip hop pioneer. It's fine that you like them, but don't compare them to Metallica and the like.
Wait. Def Leppard is in the same category as Led Zeppelin? And that category is called "classic rock?"
That sounds crazy. Does that just mean I'm old? lol
but I thought the exact same thing.
Believe it or not, as a kid in high school I watched "michigan replay with Lloyd Carr" after the Ohio State game. A tribute to the Michigan defense was highlights from the year to the tune of Matchbox Twenty's "Push." I loved it then(the first time i heard it) and I've been a fan of Matchbox Twenty ever since.
I also like The Beatles, Bob Seger, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Linkin Park (and Fort Minor) and Three Days Grace.
If you like Christian Music, Tedashii does some pretty cool rap.
I love reggae and reggae/punk. Generally positive lyrics that put you in a good mood, and a good bassline that can get your head bobbing. If you need a few examples:
Sublime (reunited as Sublime With Rome later this month)
the B Foundation (will be on Warp Tour this summer)
Iration (mushy reggae that will make your woman melt. Album came out 2 weeks ago and went straight to #1 on the reggae charts)
Also Slightly Stoopid, Mike Pinto, Dirty Heads, Rebelution, etc
loved these guys (Bud and Eric)
I've met all of them in person. Cool guys to hang with.
One of the greatest
Steel Pulse is another top Reggae band, great live.
Muse
Nothing but Muse all the time
I am a big fan of these guys. Plus they have an ambitious project, were they are going to cover 99 songs.
I'd say I have artists I like in just about every genre, but if I had to pick only one band to listen to for the rest of my life, it would be Sigur Ros, no questions asked.
This is my favorite music to hear.
Fighters. Seriously, Dave Grohl is the fucking man. New rock has become a cesspool of bands like 3 days grace, breaking benjamin, trapt, shinedown, etc., and it makes me want to "accidentally" dig a little bit too deep with a Q-tip every time I make the mistake of turning on the radio. And don't get me started on whiney-ass emo bands. The Foo are a breath of fresh air, and continue to crank out awesome music.
as well as postal service are high on my list.
I was just going through my list of stuff I have on my computer, and it ranges from Boz Scaggz, and Madonna to Esham, and Bone Thugs.I like pretty much every genre of music from "back in the day". It seems that a lot of music has steadily declined since the start of the millenium, so I keep it old school for most part; unless it is new material from established artists.
Wow, I never thought anyone on this board would listen to ESHAM. +1 to you and the wicked shit.
Was really into him back in high school.
I dig all flavors of rock, love (some) rap/hip-hop, but my favorite music has to be Electronica and its derivations.
The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, The Crystal Method, Rob Dougan, Infected Mushroom, Bjork, etc. all day long. I realize that these artists' types of music aren't wildly popular, but for the life of me I can't figure out why that is. I love it.
Close second has to be Rage Against the Machine.
I never was all that big into electronica, but last summer at Rothbury STS9 changed my perception. Their two live sets were unreal and I have become a big fan.
Musical Scores: I listen to a lot movie soundtracks. Theme for Platoon (adagio for strings), Finding Neverland, American Beauty, Crash, WALL-E. All great, and what makes them better is that if you let your mind drift with just the music it can tell a different story everytime you listen to it.
Rap: I also listen to Royce da 5'9", Slaughterhouse, a lot of older stuff (Dre, Busta, Wu-Tang). The original Only Built for Cuban Linx is real good.
Other: Neil Young is awesome (heart of gold) and Hootie and the Blowfish are real legit.
Also this:
Saw Hootie and the Blowfish live at DTE a few years ago. They put on a great show
amazing charity golf tournament each year on the Monday after the Masters in South Carolina.
The guys from Hootie and the other musicians often play before teeing off at certain holes... and then they put on a massive concert at the House of Blues afterwords.. GREAT TIME.
Last year I got video of John Daly singing Knocking on Heaven's Door.. changing the words up a bit to match his suspension at the time.. good stuff.
and Minus the Bear
Nobody listens to plain old classic rock any more, I see :(
Oh I love classic rock...I was just trying to list some new bands that I'm listening to right now.
If we are talking about all time bands, yes you can put me down for Aerosmith, AC/DC, the Stones, Beatles, etc.
Some of the best stuff ever made was from that era
Here's a link to a track I like--"Percussion Gun" by White Rabbits.

Also, not sure how big you are on branching out, so I won't go into the whole music-major-preaching-masterpieces-by-guys-dead-for-300-years thing. But a great Celtic band (probably the most successful ever) is Lunasa. They have some music at myspace.com/lunasaofficial. I recommend "Morning Nightcap."
Also, Antoine Dufour is an AMAZING (yes, ALL CAPS AMAZING) Canadian guitarist worth checking out:

Dufour based his style off of Don Ross, who is also sweet:

And where the hell is Troy Miller? He seemed really eager to talk music the other day.
I've been listening to a lot of City and Colour as of late.

I think you can shrink this list to "Anything on 107.1"
Agree w/ all.
The new Titus Andronicus is amazing.
Also have really been diggin Real Estate (same crew of people) and Surfer Blood lately.
although they aren't as popular here as they are up North... Our Lady Peace is probably my favorite band of all time. They still put on a hell of a show.
Two Door Cinema Club is one of my favorite groups at the moment.
Energetic, fun. Remind me of Toyko Police Club.
I am also a huge fan of The Antlers, The American Dollar, The Album Leaf, and more.
a lot of Cut Copy recently.
Made an appointment with an office to try it out. Walked into the office and Steve Miller Band was playing in the background. Been with that office ever since.
Musically, I pretty much live off of anything from Ghostly International. Love their free podcasts.
Also, Strauss and his waltz are pretty classic.
Oh and the Andrews Sisters..."Rum & Coca-cola" is the shit.
