EMU headed to Popeyes Bahamas Bowl
Great for EMU. They were being lectured to drop athletics in the offseason on HBO and respond by going to their second-ever bowl game.
All 4 FBS teams from MI will go to a bowl game this year.
They'll face Old Dominion in a 1pm game on 12/23.

I laughed so hard that this was the first comment. So hard that people in my office became suspiciously curious.

"3-9 would be embarrassing."

had a football team. Let alone a D1 team.
November 29th, 2016 at 3:15 PM ^
ODU didn't have a football team for many years, but relaunched the program in 2009 at the FCS level. They moved up to FBS 3 years ago and this is their first ever trip to a bowl game.
November 29th, 2016 at 10:06 AM ^
I mean, I don't think going to a bowl changes the financial realities of EMU fielding an FBS team. Especially when they will have to pay to attend this thing.
November 29th, 2016 at 10:20 AM ^
I imagine the Bahamas Bowl is actually quite expensive, too, and the number of tickets the organizers probably hope to sell are intense. EMU has low student and alumni engagement as it is, the university will have to eat a lot of these tickets once they go unsold.

If past losses are any indication, EMU is going to lose over a million dollars by going to this bowl. I don't think crowdfunding is going to cover that.
November 29th, 2016 at 11:52 AM ^
If you really want to support them, I think instead of 'crowdfunding,' maybe you can just buy one or more tickets, even if you don't plan to go.
Although Bahamas in December... Not. Too. Shabby.

If their HC turns in another successful year next year, maybe picks up another win or two, he'll be on the radar for some Power 5 gigs. As of now, there is probably no harder place in the country to win football games in than EMU.

"there is probably no harder place in the country to win football games in than EMU."
What about at Ohio Stadium with refs who are self proclaimed OSU fans?
Too soon? Probably too soon...
November 29th, 2016 at 12:22 PM ^
Not too soon at all, just the facts!
November 29th, 2016 at 10:08 AM ^
...thereby guaranteeing that, at most, a few hundred EMU alums will be able to attend their first bowl game in decades. How freaking stupid...

That's it. I'm getting popeyes for lunch.

People complain about this far too much. Yes, this does dilute the glamour of the "bowl game" hype, but are you really going to rail against having more college football to watch during (what was) a dead period in the season? Also, this gives the players and coaches more time to do what they love (and get exposure). There are certainly some financial problems this brings up for many schools (and getting their fans to travel), but that is more a fundamental problem for all bowl games - not just the newer ones.
November 29th, 2016 at 10:32 AM ^
I think they should change the rules so that only teams with 7 wins make bowls, but I agree that the complaints about this are incredibly stupid. You might as well argue that there shouldn't be any college football games played that don't potentially impact the national championship, it's basically an argument for watching the NFL instead.

Grand Valley will be playing postseason football, but Northern Michigan had a 3-8 season. Their coach should be fired for that kind of performance. They should be banished from whatever league they are in. Maybe they should have played Rutgers to pad their record.

I'm justing hoping they don't lay an egg down there.
November 29th, 2016 at 2:30 PM ^
Would that be an eagle egg, huron egg, or EMU egg? Just curious.
November 29th, 2016 at 10:23 AM ^
definitely worse places to spend the holidays than Nassau.
November 29th, 2016 at 11:02 AM ^
That's very true. After all, imagine being the teams that are selected to travel - just days before Christmas - to Boise, Idaho to play in the cold of the Idaho Potato Bowl. Prime destinations await some of these teams indeed.
November 29th, 2016 at 10:24 AM ^
I'm thrilled for EMU for sure but I wish it wasn't such an expensive bowl to go to. People were fed up with how much the football program cost before. It's going to be a lot more this year.
November 29th, 2016 at 11:31 AM ^
That is going to be one empty stadium in the Bahamas. EMU used to that tho. I say they roll. Fire up, Hurons.
November 29th, 2016 at 10:33 AM ^
Aren't you the same guy who never misses an opportunity to trash these bowl games?
November 30th, 2016 at 12:27 PM ^
Aren't you the same jaded 50 year old that changes your account every other month?
November 29th, 2016 at 10:41 AM ^
Gosh, I did not realize that Old Dominion was bowl eligible. Better than Virginia Cavs though, they ended up 2-10.
November 29th, 2016 at 10:43 AM ^
But then all they give you is a plastic spork. How are you supposed to eat blackened naked tenders with a spork? You can't use your fingers like the crispy tenders because you get that blackened seasoning dust all over your fingers.
I probably won't watch the game.

EMU missed the opportunity when they changed their names from Hurons to Eagles. They should have been the Fightin' Emus.

This is awesome for EMU. Wasn't WMU in the Bahamas Bowl last year or the year before? I think that just about guarantees an undefeated 2017 season for Eastern!
November 29th, 2016 at 11:10 AM ^
I believe you are thinking of CMU
November 29th, 2016 at 11:19 AM ^
Ok I looked it up. 2014 was CMU with the crazy ending, and 2015 was WMU's first bowl win ever. So the point stands - EMU goes undefeated in 2017!
