Hoke at Oregon is a disaster

Your avatar indicates clearly enough what you thought of the RichRod regime. I think you're being overly harsh to both coaches.
They've clearly shown that they're not up to UM standards, but they're not losers, either.
In hindsight Hoke made some good choices with his recruits, especially 3-star defensive linemen.
RichRod was coach of the year in the Pac 12 and won the South division a couple of years ago. A bad coach couldn't do that at a backwater school like Arizona.

I still think RichRod is a good coach who blew it here, but that PAC-12. Coach of the year run was fueled by a ridiculous run of end of game luck. It's like holding up Hoke's 11-2 season here with a BCS win as a vindication of his coaching.

and this year he is on his fourth QB and without his starting RB. It's not like RR only had success in the MAC and MW for one year each. Hoke on the other hand.......Hoke's main problem is that this is his second job in a row that he wasn't qualified for.

It's unfortunate that his QBs regularly get injured - though that's likely connected to the fact that he asks them to carry the ball 20 times a game - but his biggest problem remains his perennially piss-poor defenses, not to mention his crappy recruiting that leaves him exposed whenever injuries do hit.
Since leaving West Virginia, Rich is 50-47 overall and 23-40 in conference play. At some point you are what your record says you are.

Can we not go through this "Rabbit's hole" again...hehe, see what I did there.
But really, both were terrible here, and are currently really bad at their current jobs.
RR was a great innovator as an offensive coach about 15 years ago, a tactition for a new system - the RPO spread, which others have adopted and built upon. That's where it ends. He lacks in all other phases of the game as well as recruiting a well rounded staff.
Hoke is simply not a Power 5 coach and will continue to be exposed.
RR was fool's gold but very few of us knew it at the time of his hire.
We prayed Hoke was a diamond in the rough, but he was just a lump of coal.

Just one service, but you should see one here (if it's fair to classify Clark as one of those):

Three here:

One here:

It's early, but I think one here, too:

I didn't count Heitzman from 2011. He wasn't a star, but I think he performed up to his ranking.

Glasgow was still recruited. If I remember correctly, he hadn't played much football but had been a wrestling star, which is why he lacked scholarship offers. There was still a PWO battle for him that Hoke won. Glasgow did not walk on the way that Jordan Kovacs did -- he was a recruited walk on and Hoke should get credit for him.

RichRod was coach of the year in the Pac 12
And Hoke is one of the only coaches in America to have won Coach of the Year in three different conferences - the MAC (2008), the Mountain West (2010) and the Big Ten (2011).
Winning CoY is often simply a matter of exceeding expectations. Lloyd Carr never won Big Ten CoY, even in 1997.October 22nd, 2016 at 8:54 AM ^

That's his only winning conference season in his last seven-plus years.

But he'll never get the chance to do it. And that's too long to wait anyway.
People forget who assembled most of the talent on the Michigan defense that was strong minus one game last year and is in the running for best in school history this year.
Jim Harbaugh didn't recruit ANY of our defensive starters...HOKE and his staff did. In fact, outside of Gary...every real contributor on D is a Hoke recruit (including Kinnel, not counting Bush and the two freshman CBs). Think about that even the backups.
Now he's NEVER going to be a great DC, Mattison was the reason Hoke's D's played pretty well most of the time. But if he can get the talent there even CLOSE to what he did here. They'd be light years better than where they are now.
The problem at that point then would be, "we didn't execute." And that goes back to the coach, that's the reason Harbaugh took his players and they DO execute, with 2 different DC's in 2 years, in 2 scheme's they execute.
It was just a dumb hire from the beginning, neither Helfrich nor Hoke had 3-4 years to wait for the defense to go from Rutgers to average.
Toss in the fact that Helfrich, the offensive guy, can't get QBs when they had a Heisman winner and a #2 pick in the draft? They're both toast, it's just a matter of if they make it to senior day. If they do, the only reason is because they don't have anyone else who can finish out the season.
October 22nd, 2016 at 6:52 AM ^
I think this is the likely outcome at Oregon -- unless a miracle happens, Helfrich is gone after this year and so is Hoke. There's too much money behind the Oregon program to endure years like this. Change is a-coming.
If Hoke wants to continue coaching, his best avenue is either HC at some lower school or D-Line at some bigger school. If I were him, I'd take the latter. More and more I'm convinced football success for a team starts with the D-Line. A good D-Line solves a lot of problems; a dominant D-Line is a beautiful thing to behold. At a big school with good recruiting resources, he can be fairly successful in that role.

Great analysis. Except Hoke can be more than fairly successful as a big-time DL coach. He can be hugely successful -- that is where the guy has serious competency. That would be a pretty precipitous fall from his glorious first press conference at Michigan. I think it more likely that he goes down a level or two as a head coach. One or the other seems to be the only way to save his career.
October 22nd, 2016 at 5:51 PM ^
No reason to know just how competent he is to coach that posiiton in modern football.
This same bullshit was said by many around here about his hire by Oregon.
He could be a decent DL coach, who knows.
All we know is that he has sucked relentlessly at his last two jobs.
October 22nd, 2016 at 6:54 AM ^
So you're saying that Mattison wasn't a good DC hire either? Or are you saying the reason Mattison's defense wasn't as good as Durkin's or Brown's is because of Hoke being the HC? If that's the case, maybe Hoke is a very good DC but we don't know because Helfrich is the HC. Is that really what you're saying?
October 22nd, 2016 at 7:41 AM ^
Not sure where you get that... He said Mattison was the reason Hoke's defenses were so good at UM. And he's right - Mattison, the DC, made those defenses. Brady helped with the DL when he wasn't head coaching...
October 22nd, 2016 at 10:45 AM ^
So you're saying he helped with the DC all the time.

Oregon had the 20th ranked offense, but the 127th ranked defense. Both those rankings will probably stand after this week's results of all games. Whether or not Brady would otherwise deserve another year to try and turn things around, it's likely the entire Ducks coaching regime is going down in flames.

But I'm not so sure that even if the 49ers exec's knew what the hell they were doing and had a better relationship with Harbaugh, that Hackett still wouldn't have gotten Harbaugh back to A2.
October 22nd, 2016 at 8:23 AM ^
That's a good point. Harbaugh's contract was up for renewal - he didn't have to stay in SF.

Bobby Patrino left a note and spinning sage brush on his way out of Atlana, Saban and I am not interested in coaching Alabama at Miami, I am not sure how often it happens in reverse. Those two and our guy are the only ones I can think of.
