Semi OT: What's going on at Rivals?

Submitted by SAMgO on

It seems that over the past two months, there have been a steady stream of false and potentially damaging rumors coming out of the Michigan rivals site. The latest was that Brandon Peters is homesick and looking to transfer, which Sam Webb completely squashed this morning and got a quote directly from Peters that makes the rumor sound like it never had any basis in fact. Brian has chronicled some other ones on the front page, notably that Michigan was looking to cut Kyle Kalis this offseason.

So what's going on with Balas & Co.? It seems like a lot of these rumors coming out could be potentially damaging to the program if they were to spread to be taken as common knowledge by the general fanbase.

Also, guys like Lorenz might hate this, but there are multiple Twitter handles that literally repost the information from the pay sites on Twitter as soon as it drops. I will never pay a dollar for recruiting info, it's free all over Twitter you just have to do some digging and follow the right handles.

like back in 97 or so. All it took was giving yourself a handle and start talking UM football. It was a free service and actually a lot of fun. Most of the time it was just UM fans talking shit and arguing with  a few fans from Bama. Must have been post '97 now that I think of it, because the  tempers were wearing thin with  the visitors from Bama and I recall posting I wish we could play you fuckers this year. We did, with Brady at qb, but damn long time ago.

Michael Spath is the only person there with a decent combination of intelligence and communication skills.

The others are generally useless and/or off-putting.

I like Brandon Brown on the podcasts and there's generally some useful info from there.  The post-game analysis with Marcus Ray and Doug Skene(again from the Podcasts) can be pretty useful as well.

Agree that beyond that there isn't a whole lot for them to hang their hats on.

Rivals has always been a second-rate recruiting site. The contacts the Scout writers have, especially Webb, are much stronger and have a much higher rate of accuracy. In terms of raw content, Scout is better and in terms of cool features/user experience, 247 is better, so Rivals is going to get squeezed out soon if they don't improve.

I am not sure how much he will be missed. It's all about sources and then verifying what you hear with a second source. I read them all, but you have to decipher the information for yourself. They can have some nuggets every now and then. However, with the masses reporting here along with what is written here; this site is just as good if not better because it all ends up here within a few hours.

It's a good way to get clicks, though.

Take a top-notch recruit like Peters is that fans are excited about and say rumor has it he's homesick and looking to transfer, (a la Jabrill Peppers after the Hoke firing).

Annoying nonetheless.

Is it possible they lost their source on the staff (Fred Jackson)? And now they have to resort to "throw shit off the wall and troll for clicks" approach?

Then he would be forced to essentially go to Illinois, Purdue, Indiana, or ND. Because essentially every other major school is nearly as far as Ann Arbor from Avon, IN. He may miss home, but the rumor doesn't even make sense from a practical standpoint (sure, Louisville is an hour closer, it's 3 instead of 4 hours away, not a huge difference). It's not like he's from California.

Also, as a personal pet peeve, all the sites except for Scout stink at covering basketball. Basically completely ignored. I realize there's a dearth of info on bball recruiting, mainly due to the small number of recruits every year, but even with that factored in it seems to basically get overlooked.

Sam is the only one who ever has info and even then it seems to be an afterthought.

There's usually a thread every few months that debates which site is the best but 90% of the comments usually consist of "none . I don't get why people would pay for hat stuff when there's mgoblog" ...which I pretty much agree with by the way but those comments are so predictable

And then there will be that one guy who needs to justify paying for information who claims that you can keep thinking you see everything on mgoblog, but you don't.

I canceled my Rivals subscription after signing day. Their insider info on recruiting and practice news ever since Hoke left has been abysmal. I still get their monthly magazine because it does a great job covering the entire athletic department and it's really one of a kind. Although, the latest cover was a bit over the top. It has a photo of  Wilton Speight with "spring game star" underneath.

Rivals used to be the best.  The leaders for almost a decade.  It was the only sub i had at one point.

I left when they lost their only midwest analyst.  They had ZERO midwest analysts.  They had 5....YES FIVE south/southeast analysts.  Their content/articles/recruiting rankings were heavily biased towards the south georgraphically - and midwest got dumped on.

It was a no brainer for me.  Now, i believe they do have 1 midwest anallyst (correct me if i am wrong - isnt it ex wolverine Josh Helmholdt?) and probably have 4-7 southern analysts.

Its just biased shit now. Content/analysis on the wolverine appears to be crap in comparison to the early to mid 2000's when i was a member.

and most of what they report is crap. I spent way too many years paying for that sight, until I finally saw the light and found out I was paying for information you can get for free in other places. Plus the moderators over there have pretty big egos and act like they know all and will gladly tell people how smart and informed they are, when in reality they aren't.

My suggestiong is save your money and stay away from that site.

I've had rivals the past yearish and it's really been the last 1-2 months where they have gone bad. They had the coaching search nailed. They had the Swenson thing waaaay before anyone else so their sources weren't all bad. Not sure what happened but my guess would be that because of the offseason, they are just reporting more rumors to keep content up.

anyone charging a fee for information from teenagers is a scumbag in my book. even tho sam webb seems like a good guy, the fact he makes his living texting teens and then making adults pay for that is off-putting to me.

When they lost Josh Helmholt their site really went down hill. Then they hired Sully who has no connections. From Balas to Borton to Spath it's really a poor product.
