"Northwestern fans can be both heartened and disheartened by the loss to Minnesota just like how nineteenth-century resurrectionists were heartened when they pried a heart from a freshly-buried corpse and then disheartened it when they sold it to a disreputable anatomist."

Just because someone obtains a higher form of education does not instantly make them a better candidate, stop being a sheep and thinking a JD or an MBA is some form right to passage. Those degrees are easily obtainable and are a dime a dozen these days.
I would trust Brian based on his sound use of analytics and his work ethic, plus his deep passion for the University. He has also shown a business sense in developing this site and making it profitable.
Just classifying him as a "sports blogger" is a typical small minded argument (very common in politics) that people will use to downgrade his credibility.
Stack up Dave Brandon's and Brian's credentials next to each other and it's not a comparison. But honestly your telling me if Brian was AD the last 5 years the department and football team wouldn't be in better shape?
|3 weeks 4 days ago||What a Shame||
When healthy, this is a B1G championship level defense. I would stack this unit up against anybody in the Big Ten. It's a shame poor coaching, offense, and special teams are going to render this irrelevant.
Whoever takes over next year is walking into a TON of talent, and a really good unit. Absolutely one of the best run defenses in the country. This defense is going to set the next coaching staff up for success in year one (ala Denard and the offense when Hoke arrived).
|3 weeks 6 days ago||Attrition||
Assuming Hoke is out end of year, it will take a miracle to keep this class together, which is a shame because in light of everything, it's a really solid class.
A lot of this would be dependent on a swift coaching search that produces a quality candidate, but we don't even know if the current AD will still be in place and is the one conducting the search.
Even more will be dependent on how many current staff members are retained.
Regardless, I would not be surprised if we lost a handful (if not more). Even if Hoke is retained, the seat is so hot it will make recruiting incredibly difficult.
|4 weeks 6 days ago||His data is on point though||
You may not like him personally, but his analytics are very solid.
Many of his winning margin predictions correlate very close to what the actual game lines are in Vegas. In fact his are probably more accurate since he is not taking into account betting trends to equalize the action on the game.
I woukd be interested to see his formula/algorithm, as it seems rather accurate. Not sure how large his sample size is (how close his predictions have been over a 5-10 year period) but this years data is pretty good.
The amount of variables (turnovers, in game injuries, scheme adjustments) in football make predictions over 60-65% long term esstentially impossible.
|6 weeks 6 days ago||Optimistic||
I don't want to overreact, and I know this will sound cliche, but bottom line we look like a real football team.
No confusion, offensive rhythm, proper blocking assignments, tackling, even more than the score line it passed the eye test.
I think after we go into South Bend this weekend, people will be talking about Michigan. This isn't last years team, this isn't Borges offense. We are gonna make some noise.
|7 weeks 7 hours ago||Valid point||
Teasers for me are usually based on how appropriately I feel the line is placed. In this case I believe UM and MSU are getting 1-3 more points than what the matchup suggest. Teasing the lines then puts me 7-10 points more than the matchup suggest, which allows room for more random variance in the game (for example turnover margin)
I tend to place larger wagers on safer bet teasers, while looking for money line values for lower wagers. Just my personal strategy.
|7 weeks 9 hours ago||Spread||
The idea of a game spread is not to nail the point differently to an exact measure, but rather attempt to ensure the money bet on the game is evenly distributed.
I think UM has some negative public perception after last year, while ND is always a favorite of the betting public. Spread is likely inflated by a few points for those reasons.
Agreed +3 would be a more accurate depiction of outcome.
|7 weeks 9 hours ago||No +5.5||
We are the underdog and getting points. ND favored to win.
|7 weeks 9 hours ago||Teaser||
I will probably tease the lines up to +12 and +17.5.
Oregon notoriously struggles with physical defenses (Stanford) and I think Sparty can score of their D.
UM I like to win outright but I under no circumstances see us losing by 2 touchdowns.
|7 weeks 3 days ago||Ernest Shazor||
Not sure if the Marcus Ray point about him being the last intimidator at Safety was just an exaggeration, but Shazor could lay the wood.
The hit he had against Purdue to win the game is one of the best plays in Michigan history. Teams definitley feared him, he just left a year too early and it cost him in the NFL.
|8 weeks 6 days ago||Recruiting Temperature||
Not gonna lie, after some high profile misses and decommitments (Hand, Harris, Campbell) I know a lot of people (myself included) were really down on recruiting.
However, this class is shaping up REAL nice. If we can finish up with Roseboro and KLS, we've put together a legit group of high level talent for a small class.
I will give it to Hoke, the man can sell Michigan. To go 7-6 and have a lot of negative attention around the program yet still be able to pull this type of class. The guy may not be an elite in-game coach, but I would find it hard to see another coach/staff that has done a better job in recruiting this year give the circumstances.
Criticize Hoke all you want on a number of issues, but not recruiting. The guy is an elite recruiter and has built a staff of other top level recruiters. (Especially now that Borges is gone)
|9 weeks 6 days ago||Offensive Line||
I know they are trying to figure it out, but if last year was any indication, wouldn't it just make sense to select 5 guys and roll with it.
I don't see how starting a true freshman at LT is anything but suicide.
OL performance is more about functioning an a unit than it is individual talent and I don't know how we get there with the continous shuffle.
I am loving every other unit on this team right now, really fearing the OL problems cost us a legitimate shot at the B1G title.
|14 weeks 6 days ago||2018||
I know it's early. But I am HYPED for the next cycle. Nagbe really intrigues me. I think the next group will be far and away the most talented attacking team we've ever had.
Great stuff Brian. Enjoyed every second of the coverage.
|14 weeks 6 days ago||Seriously||
What. A. Douche.
You spent time creating a new account just so you could troll soccer posts. I am having trouble recalling something that pathetic.
|15 weeks 3 days ago||Subotic and Rossi||
Fools. Pains me as well. Rossi will retire never having even made a WC roster when he would have hands down started up top for us this WC.
Subotic might never either, UEFA is by far the hardest segment of the world to qualify from. Serbia missed this time and will be lucky to make it next cycle.
I don't feel a drop of guilt for either. Starting spots were here for them.
|15 weeks 3 days ago||ESPN FC||
Totally agree, this is some of the best USMT coverage there is. I have been on other soccer sites directing people here because it's absolutely top notch.
I don't know how lucrative this blog is, and I can't imagine Brian does it for the money, but you could no question rival any other soccer blog/site out there with this type of analysis and material.
|15 weeks 6 days ago||Yedlin||
I much prefer Yedlin as a 2nd half sub when he's going at defenses with tired legs. He lacks the technical ability to keep possession in a tight area, but can out sprint anyone.
Tough to figure out this Belgium side, ton of world class talent that doesn't seem to fit. Also, after the group stage you can make the argument they were in the worst group and didn't dominate by any means.
|16 weeks 1 day ago||Chile||
Great value +550 to pull the upset. They are just as talented as Brazil. Obviously beating Brazil in Brazil is tough, but they have looked very ordinary. If this WC was in any other country they wouldn't be even a top 5 favorite.
|16 weeks 6 days ago||Sports Gambling||
I had $50 on a USA victory at +350 (placed it early before the odds came down).
Literally had the money taken from my hand. The tie wasn't like kissing my sister, it was like my sister fucking me in the ass.
|17 weeks 3 days ago||Parlay||
I've got a 3-way Parlay - Ivory Coast, England, and Japan all to win.
$7 to win $175.
|17 weeks 4 days ago||Thomas Magee Whiskey Bar||
It's in Eastern Market downtown. Official bar for the American Outlaws local chapter. It's going to be insane for any USMT game (would have to get there early to get in) they show all the other World Cup games as well.
|18 weeks 1 day ago||Yup||
I wouldn't agree with a Buckeye unless he was right on, but this blog has some of the best soccer content out there, better than most websites/blogs that are dedicated to the game.
|18 weeks 1 day ago||Green||
I know he's young, but I agree soccer is a sport where 18-19 year-olds reguarly play and contribute on the professional level.
With that in mind, in the short time I've seen him play in competitive matches he has looked completely out of place. I was hoping for a glimmer of something to see what the fuss was about but so far nothing.
Hopefully he develops in time, not saying he can't turn into a good player, but he will never be an elite world class player, we would already see it.
|18 weeks 2 days ago||Qatar||
More so than the corruption this article talks of the travesty that has been the Qatar World Cup. Over 1000 dead and it's still 8 years away. The country is esstentially using slavery to build stadiums.
|18 weeks 2 days ago||Pistons :(||
Either of these guys Nik or Gary would be a much needed addition to the Pistons.
I hope one of them slips to 8.....oh wait....
|18 weeks 2 days ago||Spot on.||
Absolutely an elimination game for the loser. A draw keeps both teams alive, but the loser is starting at Portugal and Germany likely needing to take all 6 points (good luck).
If we lose Monday Ghana has esstentially eliminated us from 3 straight World Cups.
|18 weeks 2 days ago||Defensive midfield.||
I think our midfield is excellent defensively with that starting lineup, even if the back line has questions, they are protected by quality.
As far as on the counter, I'm not saying we're Argentina but remember Ghana has questions on defense as well. Also, African teams don't have the best reputation in terms of playing with great spirit/effort, especially defensively.
It's not all about technical skill, Mexico has always had better technical players and we've beat their ass plenty of times (especially recently)
I think Klinsmann has the team peaking at the right time. Still might not be enough due to our bad draw, but we owe Ghana, time to ruin their WC this time around.
|18 weeks 2 days ago||Sit back and defend||
Great write up. Unlike Portugal (maybe) and Germany (definitely), Ghana doesn't have the technical ability or discipline to break down a well shaped sunk in defense. But they do have the speed, probably more so than any other team in the tournament to expose turnovers on the break.
I think the formation with Beckerman, Jones, and Bradley is perfect for this game and will neutralize their attack.
USA 2 Ghana 0
We NEED 3 points, I think we have to take 3 from Portugal as well, can't expect any points vs Germany.
|19 weeks 3 days ago||Yup||
He made my point for me, and emphasized it to a tee.
|19 weeks 3 days ago||Anti-Soccer Fans||
What is with people that dislike soccer, and their obsession with posting how much they dislike soccer on message boards. Not just here, ESPN is the same way, and it's always exclusively on soccer.
If your not a fan, nobody and I mean NOBODY cares about how much you hate the sport. All posting about it does is certify what an epic attention grabbing douche you are. If your life is so empty and pathetic where you have enough time to continually post on something you hate...then I feel sorry for you.
The analysis on here of the USMT is top notch, and it's the football offseason in June within a week of the most popular tournament in the world.
