Walk-On Bo Dever is retiring for medical reasons but will stay on as a student assistant.

Sad to see him forced to hang it up. Was he on scholarship? If not, nice that he can get the rest of his education paid for by taking a medical hardship.

I believe he was a walk-on when he first started. Not sure if he earned a scholarship after.
August 16th, 2015 at 12:23 PM ^
No, he was not on scholarship.

As I understand it, he's retiring for medical reasons, not taking a medical hardship. That's one of the differences between being a walkon and a scholarship player.

He didn't get a medical hardship, he is quitting on his own for health reasons.
Generally, student assistants don't get scholarships. However, if their degree is in sports nutrition, sports management, or something along that line the job will be treated as an internship and they will receive college credit.
Sounds a lot more fun than sitting in a class room, not to mention putting you worked for Jim Harbaugh on your resume.

He's got the name for coaching

That or for being a country music star. But unless he drives a pick up, has a dog that just died, a wife who cheated on him, and thinks 'Merica is goin to hell in a handbasket, he'd better stick with coaching.

This is what is known as a joke. And it's still a current one.

Letting U of M or media release it.
He was not run off. The reason(s) are legitimate.

Didn't mean to imply you were. I threw that in there for others thinking he was run off. There is nothing to be gained by doing so. He was a solid contributor and spot player.

What the hell. This is starting to become annoying.

if some of these kids should have been on the roster at all.
Maybe they weren't healthy going back to last season. (Namely, Pip and his 3 concussions).

As someone who keeps track of walk-ons who come and go, it's really not that big of a deal. This type of thing happens many times per year. If you're not on scholarship and you don't have a chance of playing in the pros, there's no real reason to continue torturing your body and grinding through college. More often than not, walk-ons don't make it through all 4-5 years of college on the team.
August 16th, 2015 at 1:14 PM ^
on why someone might want to stay 4-5 years other than remaining eligible for a scholarship or a chance at making it to the pros, might be simply to be part of the team experiences that most never get a chance to participate in. Similar to Rudy or kind of a fantasy camp experience while getting your undergrad degree might be why someone would tolerate the physical demands of a major college program.
To your point though, agreed that a walk on not coming back is not earth shattering news really and shouldn't be considered part of some kind purge.

Why is it annoying? Is it annoying that guys are getting hurt? Because yeah, I agree that that's annoying.
Or is there another reason that this is annoying to you? Because the way I see it, this kid got hurt (unfortunate) but gets to stay in school, get his degree, and be a part of the team.

So I am guessing all of the negging is because I'm tired of our guys getting hurt?

I gave you the benefit of the doubt, but your post was quite vague.

He wasn't costing anything. He was a very good walk-on.
Best of luck to Bo, hope it's not head injuries.
August 16th, 2015 at 12:52 PM ^
Your comment really has nothing to do with anything.

It's not personal, Sonny.

I liked his statement thanking both of his Coaches and the University.
Well done and good luck assisting the staff.

He's not costing Michigan anything - he also is a RS Jr, and you don't really bring walk-ons back for a 5th year unless they're starting...which probably means they have a scholarship (like Glasgow).
So not sure he'd be back next year anyway.
This is a no deal - we need to focus on the player and make sure he's okay...not if this is housekeeping. It can't be, again, he's a walk-on...AND he was a senior this year.
