slightly odd, no?

I honestly thought it was a joke. It was't until all of the beat writers on Twitter starting talking about it that I truly believed it.
Agree it is pretty great recruiting tool that the top QBs in the draft are talking to Harbuagh.

I'm not sure I've ever seen NFL QBs go prep with a different college's head coach before the combine (also possible we never hear about it if it happens at other schools though)

Great point, which also raises a question. What other coaches are out there who have succeeded as a player and a head coach in both college and the NFL?
I wouldn't really count Doug Marrone, who was only on NFL rosters for 2 non-consecutive years, although he was decent as the head coach as Syracuse. Jury is still out in Buffalo.
February 17th, 2015 at 10:26 AM ^
Note: Marrone is now an assistant coach and OL coach for the Jaguars. Such a weird series of event with him quitting the HC job in Buffalo, presumably to take one elsewhere, and then became an assistant after bombing his interview with the Jets.
February 17th, 2015 at 11:44 AM ^
Right, forgot about the whole Marrone-Bills-Jets-Rex Ryan thing. Crazy. It did give us the inside track to Wheatley's return, though. Funny how it was 2 screwy coaching situations in the NFL that brought 2 native sons back home to Michigan.

interesting question - guessing theres a few floating around, mostly older white dudes like steve spurrier, jeff fisher, etc (and coordinators like mike munchak, dick lebeau who i believe played for woody). but not a ton.
harbaugh has a very unique resume, not many can match his experiences (and while he was not a star pro player, he still started and competed at highest levels and coached at highest levels). def impressive career. good question though

Is this something normally done by other coaches/schools? Personally I don't see the point.

NFL prospective QBs realize that Harbaugh knows what qualities/skills are needed to be successful at the next level. After spending 3 years at FSU winning a NC Winston doesn't go to c-bus or Oregon or LA but comes to AA to prep for the combine. This translates to top QBs wanting to come to M to play and develop under the best. That will attract top receivers, OL and RBs. Time spent helping kids from other schools also develops good will among players playing in the NFL toward Harbaugh and MIchigan and by developing extended networks provides potential access to recruits that you might not have any contact with otherwise.

from top programs are coming to Michigan to learn from the best quarterback coach in the country. It can only help. That tweet is gold.

If he has any taste in seafood at all and wants to shop local while he's here, Superior Fish Company in Royal Oak or Eastern Market. If you're going to do it, make sure you go with quality and not worry so much about price, I would say.

The last thing Jameis is worried about is the price.

I'm guessing this will pay dividends when recruits see guys draft status go up. He will become known as the QB Guru eventually!

Either way it's nice to have a coaching staff where players and other coaches show up to improve their craft. Bo was famous for that. As bad as RichRod did here, he had the same reputation at previous stops. I guess this means I have to root for Jameis at least at the combine.

It's not time for a vacation. The timing is awfully good. This type of thing doesn't just impress QB recruits.

So I saw some butthurt comments from a SF fan claiming that Harbaugh is actually a terrible QB coach. According to that comment, he wasn't that good a QB, just scrambled around a lot instead of going through his progressions, and he's imparted his bad habits on the QBs he's coached. I guess that some of the top QB prospectss in the country disagree!

It is pretty strange how far Kaepernick regressed this past season. In 2012 and 2013 I'd say he was pretty close to on par with Wilson as the best dual-threat guy in the league. I guess that's what happens though when you don't develop your throwing beyond firing lasers on every play...That dude has a cannon but also, no touch.

The Sparty hate as well. It's always nice to see MSU fans tagging along at the back of the bus, barking about why their big brother's good thing isn't that good, and why aren't people paying attention to me.
February 17th, 2015 at 10:49 AM ^
Well, I mean, it's obvious Winston and Petty did this at the behest of Harbaugh, as a continuation of the usual disrespect to MSU's program.
February 17th, 2015 at 11:13 AM ^
Please don't use the "big brother" meme. Just like the "Michigan man" of the Hoke era, the big/little brother concept with MSU needs to die.
February 17th, 2015 at 11:24 AM ^
You're free not to use either, and give your opinion that you dislike both. But it's a little silly to instruct others to stop using what's been commonly accepted vernacular for some time.
Personally I feel like the lil bro meme is accurate, given the behavior of much the Sparty fan base. And the Michigan Man thing really should be resolved among the players, coaches, and alums who promulgated it in the first place. I personally find it an attractive moniker and reasonable goal to aspire to, if not taken too seriously. But being none of the above I'll leave that to others to decide.
