CC: The nuclear option
With Hackett taking his sweet time in firing (or retaining!) Hoke, I have read a lot of material out there that says this search comes down to two names if neither Harbaugh wants the job: Les Miles and Greg Schiano.
To me, those are both unappealing options. But if forced to choose one, whom would it be?
CLICK HERE to take the survey. I will post the results later.
UPDATE: With 100 votes in, it 96% Miles, 4% Schiano. Actually, there are 857 votes in, but the percentages have been essentially the same all through the voting.
Part of the purpose of this poll was to give an unofficial voice to the fans...I knew Schiano would be unpopular, and I hope in some small way this helps the people in charge of things see how the fanbase views that hire.
I will post a few more polls in the next few days that should be more competitive.

Not even a hesitation... I am the most vocally anti-Miles poster here and I ticked Les without even needing to think it over.

you mean the two SEC titles in 15 years or the three division titles? Either way, nobody does less with more and that's why LSU fans seem to want him gone.
December 1st, 2014 at 4:28 PM ^
Nobody does less with more? I think RR and Hoke did. Even if he is what you say he is, that's Lloyd Carr, and I think anyone would welcome those days back right about now.
EDIT: And he hasn't been there 15 years, this season was his 10th. And although he only has 3 conference titles, that's pretty damn good considering he has had Urban Meyer's UF teams, Saban's Bama teams and those two really good Auburn teams to compete with.

Stopped reading at "sure he wins a lot."
December 1st, 2014 at 7:38 PM ^
I would welcome back Lloyd Carr in a heartbeat. Always in contention for a league title, occasionally win it and one year put it all together and win it all. Not many programs have it better than that.
And I would say that LSU is at a disadvantage to UF (at least when Urban/Tebow were there) and Alabama. But outside of those two, no coach has had as much success in the last decade as Les Miles. If that's not good enough for us, then we're fucked.
December 1st, 2014 at 8:45 PM ^
I don't really see how you can say that they're at a disadvantage... Louisiana is probably the 4th or 5th most talent rich state in the country and he has no in state competition. He doesn't have a spectacularly hard job... Gerry Dinardo had 2 SEC West titles there to Miles' 3, and DiNardo did it in half the time!
December 1st, 2014 at 9:38 PM ^
Prople do not want to hear the point you are making about Louisiana recruiting, but it is dead on. Most of those kids are going to LSU, not to Les Miles U. Between that and oversigning, cutting players and pulling scholarship offers to recruits who have accepted them, I do not think he is the right choice.
December 2nd, 2014 at 2:45 AM ^
People here also like to ignore the context of his tenure at LSU... you'd have to be a Kragthorpe level shithead in order to turn a team that had just won a national title into poop. I'm sure even Brady Hoke could've kept that engine running.

December 1st, 2014 at 4:37 PM ^
I'll take his 0.78 win pct, 2 national championship appearances (going 1-1), and 0.700 win PCT in the SEC West (CFB most difficult division).
I understand (and agree with) wanting Harbaugh(s) first, but Les Miles is not by any stretch a bad option.
December 1st, 2014 at 4:34 PM ^
The SEC West is brutal. Since 2007, only 2008 Florida was the only team that caused an SEC West team to miss the National Championship game. Every other year had one, and of course, LSU and Alabama were in it one year.
Miles has had a great run at LSU, despite being in the best division of college football.
December 1st, 2014 at 4:48 PM ^
but Brady Hoke does less with more. I doubt anyone is 'better' in that category than him. In fact I think an article on recruiting rankings vs. results showed as much recently

Gee, I can only imagine what the results of this poll will be.
December 1st, 2014 at 2:59 PM ^
This shouldn't even be a question. One guy wins 80% of his games coaching in the SEC and has won a national championship. The other guy has accomplished what?
If Les Miles wasn't connected to Michigan, and there were rumors floating that there might be mutual interest, everyone on this board would be 100% behind it. I cannot understand the anti-Miles crowd. Even the argument that he won't have his fertile Louisiana recruiting ground is silly. Michigan has no trouble reeling in talent.

Schiano pissed off Tom Coughlin big time that one game. That has to account for something on his resume.

He's probably going to be available after this season.

You can't understand why there would be resistance to a guy who ate both boogers and grass on television?
I can't understand why you can't understand that. Those of us against Miles are against him due to the fact we think he is an overgrown 5 year old who somehow has made a name for himself at LSU, but wouldn't be able to get lightning to strike a second time in Ann Arbor.
December 1st, 2014 at 3:33 PM ^
This is the gist of your case against him? Not his age or the ethically-flexible environment in which he works, but his sideline demeanor?
December 1st, 2014 at 4:47 PM ^
Actually, it's about ethics in football coaching
December 1st, 2014 at 4:31 PM ^
So you honestly feel that Greg Schiano is better?
December 1st, 2014 at 3:42 PM ^
1) he informed an incoming freshman that he was pulling his scholarship after the kid had moved into his dorm. This wasn't a discipline thing, it was an oversigning thing.
2) Rumor has it he allegedly, kinda, maybe banged Moeller's wife.
2 may or may not be true, but 1 is enough for me to not want him.

I can get behind your reason #1, but let's not hold a rumor against the guy, especially one that is blatantly false.

Harbaugh isn't going to the Raiders. Their management is a shitshow, and I'm confident Jim learned his lesson in SF about the importance of management given his style. The same goes for the Bears. The Jets or Giants are a possibility; their management might be better suited for him. Still, it's hard not to see the issue with the players repeating itself in a few years. That's not confined to the 49ers; the players are going to be divas at any NFL franchise. I just can't see Jim bouncing around the NFL every 4-5 years as his players get tired of him. It's readily apparent that he's much better suited to the college game; I just hope he recognizes that instead of trying to chase Super Bowls...
December 1st, 2014 at 4:37 PM ^
I liked Rob Lowe's tweet: "Please Lord, don't let the Raiders be the team moving to LA!"
To add to 'not TOM BRADY' - all those reports are floated so someone can say "told-ja"! Someone will be right, just like a blind squirrel finding a nut.

Harbaugh and the NYC media would be a total disaster. He's self-aware enough to know that. If he stays in the NFL, I expect it will be in a job no one is talking about because it will come open after a late season collapse.

I would be more interested in something like:
1. Les Miles
2. Dan Mullen
or something that has real trade-offs...but I'm way too lazy to take the 5 minutes to create that survey, so I'll stick to useless commentary instead.

Miles
December 1st, 2014 at 3:04 PM ^
This is a question? Miles is a consistent winner with a NC ring. Schiano has done what exactly?
I'll never be able to understand the anti-Miles sentiments here. Is there a long line of NC winning coaches waiting to coach at Michigan that I'm not aware of?
He's still our 2nd best option after Harbaugh (either one).

Definitely Les Miles. However I am bracing myself for the worst. . . kind of like getting ready to have drinks with Bill Cosby.
