Thursday night football - open thread
For anyone who wants to get away from the ridiculousness that is the Michigan football program for a night, there is football to watch tonight. Tonight's slate features:
UCF at Houston, 7:00 on ESPN
Florida Atlantic at Florida International, 7:00 and not on television
Arizona at Oregon, 10:30 on ESPN
I'm not a big NFL fan, but the Vikings play in Green Bay at 8:30 on NFL Network.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:18 PM ^
The only game worth watching is at 10:30.
If Arizona wins, I don't know.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:23 PM ^
They won't. The score is going to be 63-24 Oregon.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:30 PM ^
I think that sounds about right. The game might be competitive in the first half, but Oregon will kick their asses in the second half. Typical RR though. Starts off well with four wins, but it's about to get real for him yet again due to conference play.

I was referring to M RR. My bad. Yes, I know about his tenure at WVU.
October 2nd, 2014 at 9:06 PM ^
Which, coincidentally, occurred following the departure of Miami and Va Tech from the conference, at which point WVU's league competition was Louisville and a bunch of steaming garbage.
October 2nd, 2014 at 10:06 PM ^
They did shred OU 48-28 in the Fiesta bowl in RR's last year at WVA
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:51 PM ^
and anyway, the game hasn't been played yet. Nobody would have predicted last year that Arizona was gonna run Oregon off the field.

Your DeLorean needs to go into the shop.

Arizona in this game straight up...Oregon is due for their seasonal flop. What better way to continue the eternal dong punch to UM than beating Oregont tonight....

Couldn't be sweeter: a poke in the eye to Brandon, who fired him, and Hoke, who saved us from him.

Don't wanna post a thread for it since there's only one score to report, but Michigan Women's Soccer got a nice win today.
They gave up an early goal at home to defending B1G champion Nebraska and never looked back. Nicky Waldeck had a coming-out party today. Her first career hat trick, the first by a Wolverine since Ezurike in 2011.
Each goal was literally identical, I shit you not. She caught the goalie cheating up every time and just took it around her and bumped it in.
She scored the game winner with under a minute to play last week against MSU.
Michigan is now back in a first place tie with Penn State at 15 points. They play later this season in Ann Arbor. I think that game decides who the B1G Champion will be.
Michigan actually beat the eventual-champion Nebraska last year but a tie against Wisconsin cost them their first B1G Championship.

I mean this in the nicest way.
We typically don't care about other sports on this blog. Stick to football, men's basketball, and men's hockey.
October 2nd, 2014 at 8:36 PM ^
You don't care about the other sports. You're MGoFamous for being the only person negging all the soccer threads this summer that every else seemed to really enjoy.

I've been around sporadically this week so maybe I missed something, but why is WD getting neg banged on every post? I don't see what he said here to piss people off unless it's just that some people automatically downvote soccer. Just wondering.

Vikings blow.
Will be watching that late game as well.
I have Brandon/Hoke fatigue - can't read another thread on these topics until I see the one titled "(either name/both) fired".
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:26 PM ^
Nobody can deliver a bigger FU to Dave Brandon tonight than Coach Rod.
Let's root him on.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:32 PM ^
I hate Richard for what he did at Michigan, but absolutely hope Arizon wins tonight. I like Oregon and watching them play, but love upsets more.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:35 PM ^
He wanted to win more than anyone. I don't doubt the effort he put into it. But it just didn't work.
If I ever saw RR I'd shake his hand. People fail. That is no reason to dislike them.

Geez, man. I don't literally mean hate.

QUACK QUACK!
I personally have nothing against RR, but you RR lovers are insufferable.

October 2nd, 2014 at 7:44 PM ^
and the facts support me. I was not anti-RR so much as anti-incompetence which is why I want Brandon and Hoke fired. Oh and I hated the hiring of Hoke.
There were and are RR haters and I condemn that. The man did not try to lose. He wanted to win here. He, like Hoke, just wasn't good enough as a head coach to do it.
My side? My "side" is the one that wants Michigan to win and to win the right way(ethically-speaking, nothing to do with schematics). I support any coach who does that. That is my only concern.

just about as bad as Hoke is now. Everyone needs to stop talking like he was going 9-3 every year and we were inches from winning the national title.
We sucked under Rodriguez. We suck under Hoke.
October 3rd, 2014 at 2:04 AM ^
This is the ONLY place RR has failed, so it must be him, not the dysfunctional institution who couldn't pony up the extra $10,000 a year for his DC, who's AD watches game film with the coordinators without the coach present, who's bitter previous coach roamed the halls as an assistant AD and promised to sign any players' transfer requests after RR was hired, etc, etc, etc.

Rich Rod's record was worse than Hoke's, but we root him on while we vilify our own guy. I really don't get this place sometimes.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:44 PM ^
October 2nd, 2014 at 8:25 PM ^
RR had to start from scratch and was gimped from day one
Hoke takes over, makes the offense worse, and they win more games because he's allowed to bring in a high caliber DC. That's all that happened, offensive production sucked, we could kick extra points and make them, and defense picked up in intensity.
The reason I really hate that RR didn't get another year is really because I think Denard and even DG likely got the short end of the stick under Hoke... I think DG could have been a heisman candidate if the PTSD didn't kick in from the inept offensive coaching over the past few years. I know, hypotheticals are just hypotheticals.... But if RR didn't deserve another year, why is Hoke still here?
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:46 PM ^
It's almost like RR inherited Nick Sheridan and Hoke inherited Denard

You're right, it was only luck that Denard set an NCAA record for offense by a single player. But that doesn't really qualify as game changing, does it?
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:38 PM ^
RR already beat the Ducks last year.... 42-16...... I mean, it's in Oregon this time, and Oregon is a little better.... but how much better?
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:38 PM ^
I will be at the Oregon Arizona game. Look for me in the Michigan sweatshirt hoping RR doesn't win. Because otherwise... well, that would be painful on so many levels.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:40 PM ^
Now that football is back...can we ease up on the minute-by-minute Hoke/Brandon/UMvMinny updates?
I wasn't going to make a thread about Hoke/Brandon/UMvMinny updates asking people to stop making so many threads about Hoke/Brandon/UMvMinny updates...but what do you guys say?
Obviously the big/breaking news is certainly thread worthy. And anything from a major outlet or credible source is certainly thread worthy.
But I'm talking about the "random thought" threads - which is the vast majority of them. The "Why I Want Bradon To Hire The Next Coach" / "Why No Love For Mike Leach?" type threads. Or the petition threads - especially the petition threads. The threads that are now +2/-52 in upvote/downvotes.
I love this Open Thread group, you all are like the family within the MGoFamily...so I come to you first with this proposal. Do you all agree that we've had enough time for the wave of emotions and now is the time to monitor what's threadworthy a little more closely?

There's definitely going to be a higher threshold for the fire Brandon/Hoke threads in the very near future. At this point, though, it's looking like that's the only Michigan news anyone is writing about.
Hopefully we can get a win on Saturday and start to see some talk about OL/QB progress and how the divisions are looking and everything about, you know, the games getting played.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:42 PM ^
care how RR or Arizona do, neither has an impact on this Michigan team.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:42 PM ^
If you're in Detroit anyway (not sure if this is on other regional Fox outlets), FAU vs. FIU and all its "OH GOD WHAT IS THIS?" is on Fox Sports Detroit right now. Of course, they promise to end the bleeding and switch to Tigers postgame as soon as the game on TBS concludes.
October 2nd, 2014 at 7:55 PM ^
So pumped for the Oregon/Arizona game! Going to be fun watching Oregon win tonight. Hopefully the current game picks up a bit.
