The ND win usually ends up meaning nothing if we lose to MSU and OSU.
Yeah, Tate, Denard, and Devin all won the September Heisman by beating highly ranked Notre Dame teams.
Then as the season progressed, it turns out that all we really did was beat an overrated program that has not been relevant for 25 years.
OSU>MSU>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Notre Dame
Yep. How many years have we beaten ND, gotten our hopes up, only to get smashed by any rigid defense in the Big 10 - feels like an annual thing since 2008.
We are 6-2 against ND in the last 8. If we lose this year I am not going to bang my head into a wall after the immediate aftermath.
Meanwhile if Sparty wins they will be 7-1 versus us in the last 8 which will have to be the worst streak in our history. Hell we havent scored a TD in 2 years versus MSU. And our streak for OSU already has to be our worst disaster - and if not for Fickell it would be even more egregious.
Even if we lose to ND, at ND at night, they will always be our bitch. We made them look like fools over the last decade . . . 2003 beatdown I, 2007 beatdown II, 2006 D-Fest, 2009 Tatered, The Denarding in 2010, 2011 UTL I and 2013 UTL II.
They could not have looked more hapless in those games.
Chanting "Jim-my Clau-sen" from the student section during 2007 beatdown II remains one of my fondest Michigan Stadum memories.
2007: Michigan
2008-2011: MSU
2012: Michigan
2013: MSU
That's 5-2 in favor of MSU in the last 7. Wouldn't make losing to MSU hurt less because before 2008 MSU was Little Brother, but don't give them credit for winning in Mike Hart's senior year.
I don't even know why this is a question. If we lose to Notre Dame, I'm slightly bummed. If we lose to MSU, I'm pissed. If we lose to MSU and OSU in the same year, I'm crawling on the ceiling spewing exorcism related things.
So we beat ND. Big fucking deal. It impacts us zero percent in the Big Ten and doesn't matter a lick in the MNC if we lose to MSU and OSU. Those are the two we have to beat. And if we go 2-1 with the loss being to ND, you know what? Fuck it, I'm going to be fucking happy.
1) Michigan State, 2) Ohio State, 3) Notre Dame. I can't take another loss to MSU. I just...can't.
but sadly, I don't see us winning in East Lansing. We can thank the B1G for whatever stupidity resulted in us going there in back-to-back years.
This is going to be me if we lose to them again
I was in section 105 last fall in East Lansing freezing my ass off watching the most embaressing game that I've seen live. I will not be going back this year.
and I will not go back again. I was legitimately concerned for my safety. Had a bottle or two lobbed our way
That game against ND is worth nothing more than a "who won the last game?" type thing. Michigan has already won the series.
They aren't rivals to me. Rivals don't bitch out and run away to play Wake Forest and Duke. Michigan has won the series record-wise and has owned them winning 6 of the last 8. Michigan has scored 38 points or more in four of those games, winning by double digits three times.
That game against them is the least of my concerns. I don't care. If they win, good. If not, oh well, this team isn't going to win the national title anyways so it's not a big deal.
The game I'm most concerned with in the non-conf is the first game.
I am so fucking tired of losing to OSU. I've been saying that since about 2007 but seriously. This is getting ridiculous.
OSU>>>>>>>MSU>Notre Dame
It's always beat ohio.
I've seen Michigan beat ohio three times in my life. I was 5 and 8 for 2000 and 2003. I remember nothing from 2000 and three things from 2003.
Michigan beating them in 2011 was the greatest I have EVER felt in my life. I don't care if I get any crap for it, it's the absolute truth. That day was just.......liberating.
I'm the same age as you so I completely get it because I too barely remember 03', and 2006 was the biggest Michigan/Ohio State game that I can fully remember, so I would really like to get my fair share of Michigan wins over Ohio. But I am surrounded by MSU fans, not OSU fans so I can take losing to Ohio and not really hear about it, but MSU fans are killing me on a yearly basis now.
This may be the greatest Lloyd Carr quote ever.
"I think it's very, very important that Bobby Williams be given an opportunity to fulfill his contract at Michigan State,'' Carr said.
That quote was after the 2002 game.
All I remember from that game was state scoring first and their fans going crazy on TV....and then.....this happened....
God, I'd love to hear more fan stories from that.
That was 2006 if I am not mistaken? I barely remember anything about that game because Tigers/Yanks ALDS Game 4 was on around the same time and I just assumed that Michigan would take care of business against State, ahhh those were the days. Honestly though I believe our brightest days are not too far ahead of us.
You're thinking of 2006. That was our final farewell to John L. Smith. 31-13.
Weird 4:30pm kickoff but Michigan just streamrolled them. That was the year beating Minnesota was higher on the totem pole due to Mission Jug Rescue.
My earliest memory of Michigan Football was the 2000 Orange Bowl. Considering I was 4, it's incredible. The celebration in my house when their kicker blew that PAT in OT is what I remember.
This conversation saddens me because it is not unique - seeing people 18-19 year old who find beating OSU to be a shock and "unique" is a sad statement. But reality.
On the positive side, this brand is so f*cking strong that we are still recruiting as if the series has been 6-6 in the past 12 years. But let's stop pushing our damn luck. It's getting to the point that recruits (younger than you 2 peeps) have to have their dads tell them about the time UM was matching (or besting) OSU on the field on an annual basis.
And we're starting to get to that point with MSU too, at least with 13-14 year olds.
I was a freshman at OSU in 2003. That win was incredible because the friends I made that year were completely unbearable after the national title.
Needless to say, over the next few years I got what was coming to me considering the way I acted after that game. I put my stereo in the hallway of my dorm and played The Victors maxed out.
That or ''Why would you ask a dumb question like that?''.
and seeing a MSU ball carrier get cross Hi-Lo'ed by the Michigan Defense, man, the top half of his body was shifted over a foot from his lower half.
One thing I'd like to see is us taking it to them physically this year... I think we got the bodies to do it...
I don't know if this stat will help or not...I'm cherry-picking the years, but from 1976-2000, Michigan was 17-7-1 vs OSU. (My first Michigan-Ohio State recollection was watching the 1970 20-9 loss on TV as I was about to turn 6.)
I don't mean to go all statz here but just something interesting....
The longest winless streak in the opponent's city is 14 years.
ohio was winless in Ann Arbor for 14 years, until they won in 2001. After that season, well, I think we know what they did with their run through the 2000s.
Michigan's current winless streak in Columbus is.......14 years.
I wish I watched Michigan far enough back to see the time when beating Ohio was the expected occurance. Being that I became a fan in '06, it's just ingrained in me that we are inferior to OSU and lose to them every year (when Luke Fickell isn't "coaching")
It was fucking glorious. I remember one year in the '90s when I didn't even tune in to watch until the second half because I had a few chores to do. I already knew what the result would be so why drag it out?
The set "expectation" inside Schembechler is still surely "We want to beat Ohio every year!!" but realistic expectations suggest Ohio should be beating us pretty much every year. They've been the better team and program for close to a decade now (arguably longer)
Same, I'm a little older than you think and the best Michigan football memory I have was the one win I ever saw or heard about (I didn't start really watching Michigan football until after the 2006 season, although I did watch the Rose Bowls). So maybe I'll switch, beating OSU will help restore balance to the force.
I hate them all, but I think it might be MSU-OSU-ND, but MSU and OSU are almost the same. I want to win the last one against ND just to leave on a good note, but the other two are more important.
1a. OSU
1b. MSU
1c. Notre Dame
1. So tired of MSU being better than us. Can't stand anything about that school
2. Because its OSU
3. So ND can't run away with the last win like the chickens they are though this isn't a big one if we lose as most games in the last 10 years have resulted in crushing humiliation for ND in one way or another
T1. OSU
T1. MSU
T1. ND
Any other year, ND would be three, but I really want to curb stomp them like 2006 with this being the last season between us.
between MSU and OSU at this point. Just so sick and tired of losing to both of them right now that there is no f'n way I am ready, willing, or able to deal with having to again "wait until next year" in those two rivalries.
As for those chicken-s***s? Let them eat figs, but as much distaste I have for ND, if Michigan has to lose to one of those three teams, lets get it out of our system there. (And its not easy to say that, being that I'm only a bit over a half-hour away from ND and would have to listen to those hens cackling about a win for a long, long time.)
I have to go with OSU/MSU tied for first followed by ND. Let's be honest, ND falls of our radar after this year's game and while we recruit the same kids and it would be great to end the series with a win, losing to OSU or MSU again is a much larger issue. Negative recruiting, in-state recruiting, perception (reality), and the overall emotional impact on the fanbase.
