Soccer...One of the only sports you can celebrate after your team loses.
I'm sure there is a long list of NFL teams that have backed their way into a playoff spot.
Celebrating right now, not interested in citing specific examples.
Heck, that happens in every league. Division titles are regularly clinched that way.
Actually it can happen in literally every other team sport
We went to the Rose Bowl in the 2004 season that way.
Posbang you say....
I BELIEVE WE DID BACK IN!
Don't care. Bring on Belgium (or...Algeria).
Time to get some rest!
I want front page muppets!
I see the muppets. I am content now.
Nice!
we can chew 'em up and spit them out all day long!
USA! USA! USA!
Now time to keep a low profile in Accra. (or as low as I possibly can)Now time to keep a low profile in Accra. (or as low as I possibly can)
You shouldn't have to. We did everything we could do to send them through. We gave up the latest regular time goal in WC history to tie Portugal. We lost to Germany. We totally set the table for Ghana.
And Ghana responded by . . . . by scoring a goal on themselves.
Tuesday 4 PM next game - too bad it wasnt on the 4th of July!
My wife is English. I have enjoyed the whole "the US is every bit as good as England since we tied" line o'trash I have been talking over the last four years. I can't wait for the whole "We're better than England because we advanced" line I will break out this evening.

Bring on Belgium!!!
BEST LOSS EVA
Without Lukaku in top form, Belgium hasn't looked invincible. On the other hand... we didn't look even vincible today. But if we play in R16 like we played against Portugal, sans the first 5 min and last 30 seconds, we have a legit shot at Belgium. Although that 4-2 friendly loss a year or two ago is on my mind too.
I believe that we will advance on total goal differential!
I believe that we will advance on total goal differential!
I dont know the exact lineup v Belgium last year but I wouldnt take too much stock in that result only in that JK was trying a million lineups the past 3 years to find players.
I am going to put Belgium slightly above Portugal level. They dont have a CR7 of course but they will be a similar matchup and we did ok there. Every team left other than Greece Nigeria Algeria and Costa Rica has more skill than us - so that's a given. They are not an impossible matchup like Germany.
If Jozy comes back and Bradley comes out of slump it would be helpful.
Again the other options outside of Costa Rica were Holland, Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Columbia etc as 1st place teams so Belgium is an ok opponent considering it's a group winner (pending the results of this last game).
I would take Belgium over any of the other first place teams.
Belgium just shat itself.
Boy that was a tense second half but happy that USA is through. Sort of like watching Michigan football play really well, get a big lead and then win but almost blow it. It's a result you are fine with but getting there takes several years from your life.
Overall however, good result. Everything is icing from here. USA!
Well sadi.
First time we've advanced to knockout round in two consecutive World Cups. Nice accomplishment Team USA.
I believe we are a different, better team with Jozy Altidore. May he heal up soon and get back out there as quickly as possible.
Round of 16 games:
June 28
- Brazil v Chile
- Colombia v Uruguay
June 29
- Dutch v Mexico
- Costa Rica v Greece (eek)
June 30
- France v Nigeria
- Germany v someone (prob Algeria)
July 1
- Argentina v Switzerland
- USA v someone (prob Belgium)
ACKNOWLEDGE ITS SUPERIOR GOAL DIFFERENTIAL OR LEAVE IT
Oh God no. Canada/Republic Of Ireland forever. I just like posbangs and Ricky Stanzi.
Great to see the competitive integrity shown by playing hard to the end even when it didn't really matter anymore. We almost squeaked out the tying goal there at the end, twice!
cue the mainstream media articles about "the reason why soccer will never catch on in the usa is that it rewards teams for ties and losses"
The Big Gulp cup is a really nice touch.
