Bacon Tweets Harbaugh Extension: Process stalled, but trending positively.
And the second tweet, which UM won't let me embed fancy, so here's the LINK and the old school
Now I've been told: "Breakthroughs in the last couple days. Things trending very positively."
— John U. Bacon (@Johnubacon) December 6, 2023
Of course, we have heard that before. We know President Ono and the Regents want it done, Jim Stapleton doesn't, and the athletic department has dragged its feet. We'll see what happens
My confusion is why Jim Stapleton has any push or pull at all with regards to Harbaugh's contract, and why Athletics would be dragging their feet on this.

Yeah but this OP is way better.
December 6th, 2023 at 11:46 AM ^
Title not long enough. Sorry, I don't make the rules.
December 6th, 2023 at 11:51 AM ^
Or in all bold face type.
Candidly this is one of those rare instances where post #1, even though it already has engagement, should be nuked in favor of post #2. I'm just hoping the mod who makes the call actually looks at both before deciding which one to kill.
December 6th, 2023 at 12:50 PM ^
Seth was obviously already on it.
I was looking through the comments on post #1, saw the title of this post, then almost immediately saw post #1 had disappeared.

I'm guessing you were typing this as the same time as the other person, because it is quite literally impossible to miss the previous post. 😊

He types way slower then.

JUB vs Bacon..... that was the difference in the photo finish!

No Hope. No Love. No Cash.
But we still have Bacon!
Keep kicking Kevin.

Much better OP - I vote to delete the other one, "first-ies" be damned
December 6th, 2023 at 12:55 PM ^
But in the words of Samwise Gamgee, “what about Elevenses???”
December 6th, 2023 at 1:00 PM ^
That was Pippin. Normally I wouldn't correct someone on something as silly as this, but 'tis the season for LotR rewatches and it's on my mind.
December 6th, 2023 at 1:15 PM ^
Winter/Christmas is my time for LotR rewatches as well and I've always wondered why that is - do you think it's because that's when the movies were released or is there something else going on that this is the time of year we choose?
December 6th, 2023 at 1:28 PM ^
Maybe its the battle of light and dark. Since we are at the nadir of daylight, but the trend is turning?
December 6th, 2023 at 1:31 PM ^
It's because of all the elves: just like the ones in Santa's workshop.
In all seriousness, I would suspect being released around Christmas is at least part of why. I have fond memories of seeing these movies with my dad in the theater when I was a teen. Another reason a lot of people watch around the holidays might be the fact that the days are cold and short and a lot of people have the time off to watch 10-12 hours of movies (theatrical vs. extended).
December 6th, 2023 at 1:41 PM ^
More importantly, what about Elevenses Warriors? I'm picturing hobbits in scarlet and gray running out of the shire to the tune of Across the Field…
December 6th, 2023 at 2:35 PM ^
not elves, but monkeys. flying monkeys
December 6th, 2023 at 4:36 PM ^
Let's be correct here: hobbits would never wear scarlet and gray. The ones who *might* wear that dreadful color combo - are/were orcs.
December 6th, 2023 at 11:52 AM ^
We already learned this from the thread title below.
December 6th, 2023 at 11:52 AM ^
Bacon’s post seems to be echoed by a paid Athletic article.
“Michigan has been working to extend Jim Harbaugh and make him the Big Ten’s highest paid coach. While there have been bumps in the road, the contract has never been “rescinded,” as some have reported. It’s been paused, and the NCAA investigation has had plenty to do with that. Here’s what we know as of Tuesday (December 5th) Negotiations have been ongoing between the lawyers, and they’re progressing. One source with direct knowledge tells us the board and the rest of the administration continues to be behind Harbaugh and the signing. While a few “outside” influences with ties to the program have apparently been doing what they can to stop it … well, it hasn’t worked. “
December 6th, 2023 at 12:03 PM ^
Maybe it's time to cute those ties to the program...
December 6th, 2023 at 12:23 PM ^
Those ties aren't even remotely cute so yeah...long past time to cut them.
Stapleton is the name that keeps coming up, and he clearly can't hate M any more than he does already. So time for Warde and Ono to let him know his input is no longer needed or wanted.
December 6th, 2023 at 12:45 PM ^
I posted in other thread but that got nuked
Warde is friends with Stapleton...and Stapleton wanted Ron English as coach after Carr and has been pissed since then (plus hates JIm)
December 6th, 2023 at 1:13 PM ^
Would that be Ron "flame-out under a player safety cloud at EMU" English? OY-VE!
Hey, if what they say is true about him blackballing Harbaugh with the Vikings, we should thank him for his service, and tell him to STFU.
December 6th, 2023 at 1:29 PM ^
It’s ridiculous. As if English had a proven head coaching record like JH. These two things are not the same. This comparison fails in hindsight, foresight, every type of sight.
December 6th, 2023 at 6:05 PM ^
How does someone outside the department have any say at all in whether or not Harbaugh gets an extension? I don't care if he's friends with Warde or not. Absolutely baffling. Doesn't make a lick of sense.
December 6th, 2023 at 2:56 PM ^
So time for Ono to let Warde know his input is no longer needed or wanted.
December 6th, 2023 at 12:06 PM ^
not sure why people can't admit that paused/can't sign it right now and pulled/rescinded are the same thing.
the only possible distinction is whether it's a temporary state or a permanent one
December 6th, 2023 at 12:10 PM ^
Because they aren't, and your second paragraph is the explanation why
December 6th, 2023 at 12:17 PM ^
"rescinded" does not have to mean permanently.
December 6th, 2023 at 1:27 PM ^
You really don't know what rescinded means. If someone rescinds a contract offer, it means it's cancelled or completely withdrawn and you're done. If a job offer gets rescinded, you don't keep negotiating with the person.
It's completely different than them pausing negotiations or continuing to negotiate while the investigation went on.
December 6th, 2023 at 1:35 PM ^
Do we even know a contract was offered? I think "rescinded" requires that the contract was waiting for JH to sign in. Since I don't think that was the case, a contract can't be rescinded. UM was probably working on a contract for JH, and they paused working on it.
December 6th, 2023 at 2:03 PM ^
I would guess a basic contract was offered (duration, pay, etc.) and the negotiations were around the details and buyout, stuff like that. Jim could have probably signed the first offer and UM would have taken it. But a contract offer like this probably has round after round of negotiations and redlines. Typically what happens is the offering side (UM) sends over a contract to Jim's lawyer that outlines the high-level items they've agreed to already (pay, duration, assistant pool, etc.) then his lawyer sends back other provisions and carveouts that Jim wants. Then once the general terms are all agreed to they haggle over the wording and details. A lawyer could probably tell me there's a different process for this but in large business contracts this is typically how I've seen it handled. So yes, there was an "offer" but that's just the first offer, and no one ever takes the first offer.
December 6th, 2023 at 12:21 PM ^
Because they're not the same.
Paused = can't sign now but negotiations will resume at some point.
Pulled/rescinded = negotiations are over. The offer is gone.
December 6th, 2023 at 12:46 PM ^
Let's say it together: "Temporarily rescinded"
whoa it worked
December 6th, 2023 at 1:02 PM ^
I see your temporarily rescinded and raise you a Permanently Paused!
December 6th, 2023 at 1:28 PM ^
Never in the history of contracts has the phrase "temporarily rescinded" been used. Until now. So good job for making that up.
December 6th, 2023 at 2:19 PM ^
That’s an oxymoron, and you’re the same minus an oxy
December 6th, 2023 at 6:18 PM ^
rescind /rĭ-sĭnd′/
transitive verb
- To make void; repeal or annul.
- To cut off; to abrogate; to annul.
Similar: rescinded - Specifically, to vacate or make void, as an act, by the enacting authority or by superior authority; to repeal.
"to rescind a law, a resolution, or a vote; to rescind a decree or a judgment."

December 6th, 2023 at 7:57 PM ^
This is what happens when the athletic department whores itself to the highest bidder. You have to consider their agenda instead of doing what is best for the program.
December 6th, 2023 at 11:55 AM ^
I have worried that Harbaugh is dragging his feet. If Ono and the Regents want it done (and they should), it should get done this week. The longer we wait, the less likely it happens, the harder recruiting is. It is unacceptable for the Athletic Department to undermine recruiting.
December 6th, 2023 at 12:16 PM ^
Keep in mind, the regular season just ended. This kind of stuff generally gets done in the offseason.
December 6th, 2023 at 12:27 PM ^
Yeah, when Harbaugh has been trying to get an NFL job. I wouldn't be surprised if something similar is happening now and Harbaugh is seeing what might be available next year.
December 6th, 2023 at 5:32 PM ^
Unfortunately, I share your pessimism. As a lawyer who negotiates some pretty complex contracts for a living, seeing these positive updates that the contract negotiations are “progressing” for several months are pretty disheartening and make me suspicious it’s a public narrative covering for something else: one of the parties is simply not willing to sign a deal right now. In my view, it would basically be sufficient grounds for a for-cause termination of Warde if the delay is on him — I’m joking . . . but only partially, especially if the Regents and Ono want this done — so I am starting to fear it’s Jim.
The truth of the matter is that these agreements are simply not that complicated or lengthy to negotiate if the parties wish to do so. An agreement like this can go from delivering a term sheet to execution over a weekend if the parties are motivated. We literally see schools do it with coaches all the time.
I hope I’m wrong and it’s just a matter of Jim and the AD each having the slowest lawyers imaginable on one of their most business critical agreements, but I really can’t imagine that’s the case. We’ll see, I guess.
