LV Raider fire GM Mayock

Do you think this helps or hurts our odds of keeping Harbaugh you think?

Ultimately agree with this as well. I do agree, it would be a dereliction of duty to not make Luke Fickell your first call if Harbaugh ultimately decides to move back to the NFL, but it seems like a pretty safe bet Fickell to UM won't be happening.

Still, the roster and infrastructure JH put in place at Michigan right now is in excellent shape. With the way coaches can pretty take any job they want at any given time, Michigan will have access to excellent options to replace Harbaugh. Assuming Fickell is a "no", I'd give Aranda a look, maybe check the pulse with Matt Rhule, and Dave Doren. Put guys like Justin Wilcox, Eliah Drinkwitz, and Jeff Hafley under the microscope and see if you might have something there. Kalen DeBouer was a great hire for UW by the way. He was my choice had Harbaugh subsequently left last year.

I think Harbaugh leaving would be devastating. Not because Jim is irreplaceable but because it would be a clear sign that the University of Michigan has no intention of doing what it takes to compete at the highest level of college football. If you want Michigan to compete for championships then this would be a disaster.

Gattis could end up being very good, but the odds of Jim Harbaugh or Luke Fickell winning 10 or more games on a regular basis is way higher than Josh Gattis.   I think I would probably be much happier with the much maligned Matt Campbell than Josh Gattis (and this is not an endorsement of a Campbell hire).

That having been said, I know that whoever they hire, by the time spring practice comes around, I will be in full, rationalizing why there is no need to worry and this could turn out great mode.   And that definitely says way more about me and my fandom than it does any real confidence that is ultimately the way replacing Harbaugh would go.

Man, are you sure? Gattis could end up being a good head coach at some point but are you sure you want UM to hire a guy that’s never been a head coach, has only been an OC for 3 years, and….the first couple of years weren’t great? I’m not completely against it because I like the staff as a whole. Will all of those guys even stay if Gattis gets the job? I just can’t imagine Warde handing the keys to a guy that’s never been a HC before. Also, can you imagine even thinking this 1 or 2 years ago?

If I were Harbaugh, I'd stay at Michigan.  With his reputation and Michigan's, he's likely to have a top ten team based upon the recruits.  It's much harder in the NFL, and he'd be starting anew at a rather late stage of his career without the support system that he's got here at Michigan (family in particular, as well as the university).  On the other hand, being in demand by the NFL can help his reputation and thus his ability to succeed at Michigan.  Finally, the Michigan job would probably be more fulfilling in terms of doing something useful and self-worth.  Young amateur men are more receptive to life coaching than are professional football players.

I personally think firing Mayock increases the odds of Harbaugh making a move to the Raiders. If Harbaugh wants more control/support, having control of the GM/administrative side is a key step the Raiders made.

we don’t if Michigan has offered a similar scenario or not. Nor do we know what matters most to Harbaugh.

one way or another, I just want this end and end soon

Harbaugh isn’t going anywhere. When Jim walked across the dance floor and asked Mike Elston if he’d care to have the next dance, and Elston said “I’d be delighted!” everything after that is/was reduced to theater. Negotiations take awhile sometimes, and are never over until someone pushes away from the table or signs on the dotted line.

Neither here nor there. But it seems that the Raiders are also interviewing GMs. That helps marginally. The ideal situation for JH is to help pick a GM.
