How backed up is I-94 at 10:30am
We are parking at Lucky's Market(Stadium, block east of State) and coming from Westland. We won't be able to leave until around 10am. Just wondering how far I-94 is backed up at that time. I was hoping to take westbound Mich Ave to I-94 and get on US-23 North to Stadium exit and taking that all the way to Lucky's.
Is 94 backed up past 23 at that time? Would I be better off just taking Michigan Ave through Ypsi and taking Packard out of Ypsi up until Stadium?
Also, thought about taking Ford Rd. all the way to M-14 to US-23 South to Washtenaw/Stadium.
I've got some health issues and being in a car for too long can exacerbate them. I know, I picked a hell of a time to leave for the game. Lol. But, that's kind of out of my hands and I'm just trying to find a route that minimizes my time in the car.
Thanks all!

Hmmm. Looks kinda backed up...

Too many humans driving cars. Makes it rough for the rest of us.
October 19th, 2021 at 10:14 PM ^
Do you have back problems from sitting in the car seat?
October 19th, 2021 at 10:16 PM ^
Caught the dang sciatica.
October 20th, 2021 at 9:42 AM ^
Sciatica sucks. I work out and run, use a standing desk, I'm 25, and the day after replacing some bushes I woke up and couldn't stand/sit and my leg was both numb and in a ton of pain. Happened a month ago and still am dealing with the hip pain from it, but it is only 10% of what it originally was.
October 19th, 2021 at 10:15 PM ^
Very. I'm from Westland too, here's your route: Michigan Ave west to Ypsi, then pick up Cross, which becomes Packard. Take Packard until it starts to veer north toward Stadium. Left onto Jewett (appropriate for the day!), park there for free. 20ish minute walk to the stadium from there.
October 19th, 2021 at 10:22 PM ^
That's pretty much the route I was looking at if I-94 is backed up past 23.
Where do you park for free on Jewett? Mostly houses there isn't it?
October 19th, 2021 at 11:53 PM ^
All houses, yes. We park on the street. There are a couple fire hydrants but other than that the whole thing is fair game, no residential permits needed. Same goes for Rosewood, which is one street closer to the stadium but usually a bit more full.

GLV is following two good principles:
* You should always drive around football traffic in Ann Arbor. There's rarely any point in being in a slow-moving parade. The town just isn't that big and it's easy to find less-congested routes that aren't that much longer than the original one.
* If you're able-bodied, you can easily park free and walk (not necessarily far) to the stadium. Position yourself well and you'll have easy traffic on the back end even after spending 20+ minutes walking. Burns Park is a good example.
October 20th, 2021 at 12:00 AM ^
Sound advice. No sciatica, either.
October 20th, 2021 at 10:18 AM ^
Geddes all the way from US-12 isn't bad either, but given where you want to park Cross/Packard is the way to do it.
October 20th, 2021 at 1:07 PM ^
If you already paid for your parking at Lucky's follow everything GLV said but keep going on Jewett until you hit Industrial. Turn right on Industrial and Lucky's will be on yer right.
October 20th, 2021 at 2:02 PM ^
Oh great, now the secret is out, I always park on Jewett.
October 20th, 2021 at 2:58 PM ^
Lol. I had no idea they even allowed street parking there.
Don't worry, I won't take up another spot. At least not this week. I Park'n'Party at Lucky's because I like knowing for sure there is a spot reserved for us.

Is it still pretty east to get to when the golf course is closed?
October 23rd, 2021 at 5:55 PM ^
Thanks for a great suggestion. Worked like a charm.
November 27th, 2021 at 8:16 AM ^
This has worked great so far. Any idea how much more crowded this area gets when the golf course is closed?
October 19th, 2021 at 10:18 PM ^
Is parking at Lucky's free? Is usually difficult to get a parking space?
I am curious because that sounds like a great plan to me.
October 19th, 2021 at 10:22 PM ^
It didn’t used to be crowded, but now that all those damn mgobloggers know about it……
October 19th, 2021 at 10:30 PM ^
If you take Ford in anyway, probably don't want to bother with 23. Back roads can do most of the work for you. Some good suggestions here.
Of course, I'm not a great source. I usually came from the west side of town, and I never, ever, ever took major highways or roads.
October 20th, 2021 at 8:06 AM ^
By any chance, you're talking about similarly named roads in Minneapolis, are you?
October 20th, 2021 at 12:37 PM ^
Hearkening back to my days living in A2, actually. I'm not as familiar with Minneapolis as I could be, perhaps.

Romulus resident here (but an Ann Arbor native), so not terribly far away from you.
If you take Ford, then take it all the way to where it meets with Plymouth near its terminus at M-14. Turn onto westbound Plymouth-Ann Arbor, then follow that all the way through Dixboro Village (you'll pass the western terminus of Cherry Hill Road), over US-23 and then to Huron Parkway.
Here's where this gets a bit funky, but bear with me because it has worked for me before, weirdly enough.
Turn south onto Huron Parkway, then right onto Fuller. Follow Fuller all the way to where it turns into Glen, then take Glen south to East Huron (you'll be right at the foot of the Biosciences Building).
Take a left, and East Huron will almost immediately become Washtenaw Avenue. Follow Washtenaw all the way to Brockman Boulevard.
Brockman is residential, so it's a slow, meandering road. You'll cross East Stadium near St. Francis. Keep south-ish on Brockman all the way to Packard, then take a left onto Packard, then an almost immediate right onto Rosewood. More homes, imagine that, eh?
Follow Rosewood to S. Industrial. You should be about 500-ish feet south of what was, until recently, Lucky's Market. It's being converted into something else now.
October 19th, 2021 at 11:09 PM ^
I'm leaning towards the Michigan Ave. route suggested above. I'm closer to Mich Ave than Ford Rd.
Do you usually go up to Ford Rd from Romulus? If not, which way would you take towards A2?
October 20th, 2021 at 6:24 AM ^
The Michigan Avenue route probably works a bit better - you could even follow Michigan Avenue all the way to Platt (just a few miles outside of Saline) and then take Platt north to Packard, then left into Packard and pick up Jewett from there too. I've actually done that as well. Anything to avoid I-94 on game days really.
October 19th, 2021 at 11:17 PM ^
I'm not good at giving directions, but I'm sorry to hear about your health condition and wish you a smooth game day commute.
October 20th, 2021 at 9:16 AM ^
Name does NOT check out!
October 19th, 2021 at 11:17 PM ^
I'm actually a fan of 94 to 23N to Washtenaw. Right onto Washtenwaw, right to Carpenter, down to Packard, then right and follow it into the neighborhoods north of Stadium.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but 3 rights make a left.
Good luck and Go Blue!
October 19th, 2021 at 11:22 PM ^
10:30am though? This route was the one I thought looked simplest, but figured 94 might get backed up well before the 23 exit.

Download Waze
Enter your destination
Enter the time you would like to arrive, or depart
It will tell you how long the back up is on that day at that time, possibly even for football Saturdays. It will at least do it once traffic backs up. It will show you the best route.
Or google maps. Insert shrug
Enjoy the game

Waze works great - so long as people are updating at appropriate times. But it's only as good as the updates it gets, which aren't always great...
October 20th, 2021 at 10:47 AM ^
How does Waze work? Like when it says "police reported ahead" how do they know? Because wouldn't you have to pull off the road in order to notify others through the app? I can't see how/why people would do that. I mean, I consider myself generally considerate, but not that considerate.
October 20th, 2021 at 11:08 AM ^
Not sure how it gets put in originally, but once you pass the police points it will ask you if they're still there or not and you just tap yes/no on a quick pop up. I also wouldnt be stopping or paying too much attention to log where they are but Ill always update the information as I pass.
October 20th, 2021 at 11:43 AM ^
I’m guessing it’s usually someone in the passenger seat doing that. You’d have to be quite the Good Samaritan to actually pull over and update Waze.
October 20th, 2021 at 1:46 PM ^
If its set-up, big icons on the vehicles screen make it as easy as changing a radio channel.
October 20th, 2021 at 2:29 PM ^
Waze and Google maps use realtime traffic flow information from all their users to determine the fastest route. This doesn’t require any user input and is the most valuable feature
Waze also allows users to report specific hazards like police or a stalled car. These reports are not used for routing but come in handy when on the road. They are the ones where you also have to wonder if the reporting itself causes a hazard. Waze tries to minimize the interaction and also suggest a passenger do the reporting.
I became a dedicated user of Google Maps when traveling up the I5 for 4 hours. There are no alternative routes at all normally on I5, it’s just a straight shot, but I accidentally had google maps running at the time. Suddenly in the middle of nowhere, Google Maps suggested an alternative route at the next exit. There was no visible traffic backup ahead but I took it anyway out of curiosity. After traveling on 3 different country roads with barely any other cars, I was routed back on to I5 about 2 exits north. It turns out there was an accident just south of where I got back on and I could see the traffic was stopped and backed up for miles, I avoided about a 1-2 hour delay and when I got back on I was the only car.
Since then I always have a map program running to avoid backups. Every once in a while I am re-routed. Waze seems to have slightly faster routes on occasion.

semi-unrelated traffic question: is geddes open now? that was my 'back way' but vs. rutgers the road was closed near huron high. has that problem been fixed?
October 20th, 2021 at 6:20 AM ^
It is not. If you come in via Geddes, you will still need to detour north on Earhart and west on Glazier Way. From there, of course, a Michigan left onto Huron Parkway and then you can reconnect with Geddes.
October 20th, 2021 at 6:21 AM ^
Geddes is not open yet. It's almost done, but not sure if it will be open for the game. 1 more layer of asphalt and then striping it. Could it be done by Saturday? Maybe, but with rain on Thursday, probably not.
October 20th, 2021 at 7:59 AM ^
Big thanks to you and LSA 2000. My next game down there will probably be versus Indiana, so it sounds like that road might be reopened by then. Good to know.

In all seriousness, it can get really bad both directions. Plan on quite a bit of time in traffic.
